As many of you know, I really love words and the fun that can be had with them. However, as you get older (so I’m told), you might have a bit of job trying to remember a particular word that you were searching for.
How many of us have said,
“Can you pass me that…….thingummyjig’ or perhaps ” where is the …….oojamaflip?” Where on earth do these silly words come from? I know I often resort to ‘do-dah’ when I can’t find the word I need.
My step-father had a broad West Country accent and he would often say something like,
“Go and get the wha’s call it for I.” He also had a lovely way of getting words mixed up as in ‘every Dick, Tom and Harry’ or better still, “pass I thick Amber Solamber, will thee?” Now, of course, he meant to pass the Ambre Solaire suntan lotion. Bless him, he always took it in good part when we laughed!
My husband is another one who can’t recall what he wants to say (well, he is even older than I am), and will refer to things as a ‘gizmo’ or ‘dooberry firkin.’
It’s funny though as most of these words we resort to when we can’t think of the right one, are probably about three times as long!
So funny!
I know it’s definitely age that does it sis! I find myself trying to find many a ‘thingy’ and no one can help me because they don’t know which ‘thingy’ I’m referring to!

Great post, I loose so many words! I have been on neuropathic pain killers for about eight years and the have robbed me of do many words. A doctor once said while takin these pills, they b decompartimentalize your brain , words you do use too often get filed away. I have almost cut these pills out but a lot of my vocabulary is hiding. If I am stressed or excited I just talked giberish! Hugs Sis 💜💜💜💜 knowing you do it too, to a lesser extent makes me feel better 💜💜💜

I think quite a few of us forget or miss the odd word Sis. It must be horrible for you though to have lost yours like that. You would never know from your poems and writing at least, Sis, you are so very talented. 💖💖

Thank you Judy that’s so kind of you. It’s more when I speak to people, some days worse than others. When I write I can take my time and find my words 💜💜💜

I didn’t notice when I spoke to you, either, Willow, but then I often get tongue-tied or fall over my words! 🙂

Indeed. We all do forget words, even the word thing-a-ma-jig and do-dad. 😀 😀 😀

You are right, Judy, the silly words we use are longer. I sometimes can’t think of words but I think it is when I am trying to do to much at once.

“Doo-hickey” is another favorite word for when I can’t think of something. As is “thing-a-ma-bob”

Hello, and thanks for stopping by. I am Judy, in my (very) early fifties and decided that life definitely gets more interesting as it goes on! I am a wife and a mum and have just finished University as a Registered Nurse, after having worked as an Associate Practitioner in the NHS. I am also a poet and the author of my debut book, 'Rhymes of the Times.' I love to laugh, and I love rhyming words too, so I joined the two together, and my book was born. I am currently working on another book in the series also. I am a prolific blogger and enjoy writing funny stories, anecdotes, and anything really that takes my fancy.
