Now as some of you may know, I rather like my food. and one of my absolute favourite foods is cheese. Now I was pretty upset last week when I was told that I can only have 3 portions of dairy daily, and that I should only ever have a matchbox sized piece of cheese as a portion! Now that to me, is a bite, not a portion , but I am trying to heed the advice as I know that it is for my benefit.
Anyway, in our family of cheese lovers,(apart from Mr Grump who hates it), it is very often customary for us to break out the cheeseboard after a meal, or it comes out if we are having a buffet or something. Either way, it is a prominent feature.
Now most of us like to have something to go with our cheese, and crackers are usually the perfect accompaniment (along with a glass of wine for some). You can buy those boxes of different crackers that are perfect for the occasion.
Even on the ward where I work, we have the option of cheese and biscuits for our patients as many of them enjoy this as a snack, or again, after their meal.
You might wonder where all this is going. Well, a woman and her step-mother went for a meal in a hotel, and the step-mum fancied some cheese and biscuits. Nothing unusual here, in fact quite a reasonable request.
Someone, unfortunately took her request literally! What turned up was a bowl (yes a bowl) of different types of cheeses (so far so good I suppose), mixed in with an assortment of biscuits! Not crackers that you would normally associate with cheese, but (by the looks of it) a random selection from a box of ‘Family Circle’ biscuits!
Now I am not sure whether I would like to try the Custard Cream and cheddar combo, or perhaps the Jammie Dodger and red Leicester, or for a special treat the Bourbon and brie! Every one’s a winner in my book!

I love Jammie Dodgers! I tried picked some up once at a World Market, but haven’t been able to find them anywhere else stateside since. We Americans are truly deprived of deliciousness like that.

Oh yes you are definitely missing out there! I’m rather partial to a custard cream myself dunked in tea!

You just need to reconsider what you mean by a matchbox.

Yes. I prefer the huge Bryant and May matchbox size myself! 🙂

Then, there are always fireplace matches, which in the states can be as long as 12″

It’s always a matter of perspective. If the doctor doesn’t make it specific, then it’s up to interpretation.
There was a TV show here back in the ’70s called Becker, he was a doctor in New York. In one episode he tells the patient to be on clear liquids for the weekend. She responds, “you mean like vodka?”

Ha Ha! Oh I love that! Yes. I am going to alter my perspective!

Thank you very much for your comment. Yes, well I was cheesed off when I was told to only eat a small portion! 🙂

Depending on which diet you follow, cheese doesn’t have to be the enemy! For instance, the Low GI diet will let you have quite a bit more cheese than the paltry matchbox. One problem: no biscuits to go with. You can always learn to love the celery stick as accompaniment ….? But oh! this post is a revelation because it never occurred to me to team up the Jammie Dodger with a nice sharp cheddar. Working on many levels.

Hi and thanks so much for your comments. I am just trying to eat more healthily due to being recently diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes. Low GI is good, so I might have to make friends with the celery! Proper biscuits are pretty much off the menu for me now, except for the odd one! I like your style, Jammie Dodger and Cheddar! 🙂

If Low GI is going to be your new best friend, then as a snack “cheese and nuts, nuts and cheese” all the way. Sorry to hear you are having to deal with Diabetes – I’ve been off and on low GI diets for other reasons and actually you feel pretty good on them. I call this book the bible: John Ratcliffe “GI Feel Good, Health & Weight Loss” available at abebooks.co.uk. Thanks very much for reading my post by the way!

I do like nuts as well, so am quite happy with the nuts and cheese combo. Thank you so much for recommending the John Ratcliffe book. That is so thoughtful of you, and I will check it out.

I would never comply to such a sample-size ‘portion’ of cheese! As for the biscuits, I would have the Jammie Dodger with Camembert any time!

That’s hilarious. When my husband’s mum first starting learning to cook she wanted to make his dad a cheesecake and made it using cheddar cheese!

My husband and I often will make a cheese, fruit and cracker board for lunch. I would be so sad without it.

Sounds lovely, I am sad that I have to drastically cut down on my cheese intake!

Leave it to you to wine about cheese. Sorry…couldn’t resist that. So, I say Matchbox car sized cheese. You know those hot wheels boys play with? That’s a happy medium, isn’t it? Especially when it’s medium sharp cheddar!

I reckon I could go with that Stephanie! Trust you to be able to see the funny side. 🙂

Love a bit of bitey cheddar with jam myself….
But sadly cholesterol levels meant cheese and I can no longer be close friends either…
