#SillySaturday: The Shells in Lockdown — May 9, 2020

#SillySaturday: The Shells in Lockdown

I have teamed up again with the talented Sandra (or Daffy as I like to call her), from Wild Daffodil to bring you another bit of silliness this Saturday.  Sandra is incredibly artistic and creative, and I just love the images she has created out of shells, stones and flowers.

One of the nicest things about Sandra’s blog is that you never know what she is going to get up to next, from beach art to knitted wigs, and mandalas to making spirals in her garden.

This week we discover that the Shells have had to find a new way to stay in touch due to the lockdown.

Coronavirus has hit Shelbyville

None of the residents wanted to get ill

It was with some resistance

They had to social distance

Yet they found they could communicate still!

All of them had the Zoom App installed

So during lockdown they wouldn’t feel ignored

They could chat every day

Sing songs, dance and play

No chance of them getting bored!

At 9 every day it’s keep fit

With the Aliens it’s become quite a hit

With their yoga and gym

They keep themselves trim

They are not the type to just sit!

Maggie and Shelma miss going to town

All the shops they love have closed down

But the girls are not stopping

They now do internet shopping

They’re the most glamourous Shelbys around!

Sandy misses Shelma whom he dated

His love for her is unabated

He keeps the romance blooming

With lots of daily Zooming

Most of it is very X-Rated!

My First Post as a Nurse: Some Advice on dealing with Corona Virus- 'Gangsta Style!' — March 21, 2020

My First Post as a Nurse: Some Advice on dealing with Corona Virus- 'Gangsta Style!'

Whilst at Uni, we had to come up with something original for our Infection control module. As many of you know, I like to write poems. However, I thought that might be too obvious, so I made a rap instead! I apologise for my awful ‘rapping’, it was harder to get the timing right than I expected, and it is all about the lyrics anyway! They are particularly pertinent in these uncertain and unsettling times of the Corona Virus. I did make sure I downloaded the backing music from a paid for site too!

Yesterday you met Penelope Pompom who was suffering as a result of the menopause. Today after chilling out at the beach with her friends and family she is a little more chilled… Why not check our #SillySaturday post about Shelma and Maggie some of our Shelby friends!

Penelope Pompom was cool

She didn’t like following the rules

She still wanted to be naughty

Despite being past forty

And just loved acting the fool

***

She kept herself looking good

The envy of the Mums in the hood

With her spiky green hair

And bright pink outerwear

She worked it like nobody could!

***

Her kids just thought her the best

She could twerk and floss with the rest

Their friends would come running

When they saw Penny coming

She would always make them less stressed.

Here we introduce you to a new character that Daffy has so cleverly created. Meet Penelope Pompom. Why not check our #SillySaturday post about Shelma and Maggie some of our Shelby friends!

Once Penny had hit middle age

She found it hard to engage

Finding lumps in her custard

Or a ham sandwich without mustard

would sent her off in a rage!

***

Penny once sweet and so calm

Now caused her family alarm

Being so spiky and sour

Miserable and dour

Her twins thought she’s cause them some harm

***

Off to the doctor to find out the cause

Of Penelope’s new character flaws

The hot flushes and stress

Weight gain and night sweats

The symptoms must be menopause!

***

Penny felt cut to the quick

No wonder she always felt sick

Always crabby and tearful

Het up and fearful

This menopause was like a cruel trick

***

She took the kids out for the day

Off down Shelbyville way

The sand and the sea

And her friends’ company

Kept her bad temper at bay!

Mrs Moss was up with the lark

Taking Lichen her dog to the park

They walked everywhere

To get lots of fresh air

And didn’t get home til ‘twas dark!

Mossie was a sturdy old stick

Very rarely did she get sick

At seventy years old

Fit, adventurous and bold

She can even still do a high kick!

Out and about every day

Visiting places and pals on the way

She was going to tea

With the Shelbys by the sea

And was buying some cake on the way.

Year Two of Being A Student Nurse — February 14, 2019

Year Two of Being A Student Nurse

Only another few weeks and that will be the end of my second year in my training to become a registered nurse. I know everyone told me how quickly the time would pass, and it seems they were right. I have chronicled my journey so far in a couple of poems here and here and thought it only fitting that I should write a poem about how I got on in the second year.

During the second year of my nursing degree

There was so much we had to do

Not only were there assignments to write

But Clinical placements too

I’ve written a digital story

About person-centred care

Also critiqued and reflected

Whilst tearing out my hair!

Learned about diseases I hope I never get

And the drugs that treat them

Which I pray I don’t forget!

An important group presentation

Where things could get quite fraught

And of course, applying theory to practice

In everything we’ve been taught!

Despite my doubts and worries

That I would be able to succeed

I am still hanging in there

So, bring it on year three!

A New Look for the New Year! — February 9, 2019

A New Look for the New Year!

Unfortunately, I have not been able to blog as much as I would have liked over the past year and I especially miss catching up with everyone. I have managed to get on Facebook though and have at least been able to see what you have all been up to. Even if I haven’t interacted much, I am still lurking about in the shadows!

I have just finished Uni for my second year in my nursing degree and have got 7 weeks left of a very busy placement where I feel there is so much to learn. However, as we have just had horrid Path & Pram plus medications management exam I am finally free from the revision that has been taking over my life for the past god knows how long!

All assignments are now finished and passed and I am just awaiting the results of that exam (in about 3 weeks time) to be able to relax (albeit temporarily) and look forward to my 3rd and final year)!

I had a look at my poor neglected blog and decided that I was going to move back from self-hosted to WordPress as it was due to expire and I cannot afford to lash out for another few years, plus it is cheaper doing it this way. As some of you may remember though, my technical skills when it comes to blogging are pretty rubbish and when I transferred everything back I lost all of my images (sound familiar? I did this before once as well)! Not only that but I have had to change themes as the other one was a plugin for which I would need a business account). Anyway, suffice it to say that I am now fiddling and faffing about trying to add images to all of my posts. (Hopefully, they are all stored on my pc but it is finding them, as I forgot exactly what I called them when I filed them)! Oh, and to top it off all my followers seem to have legged it! (Not that I can blame them though as I have been a little elusive lately!

So what I am blabbering on about is that I am still here despite my blog looking bloody awful and pictureless. I am doing my best to get it looking pretty again but not sure this theme is one I will stick with yet. I am hoping that now I am back in the warm embrace of WordPress my site won’t keep falling to bits despite my best efforts to muck it up when I try ‘improving’ it.

If anyone is still around and reading this, THANK YOU! I will try and be a little more active with my blogging this year. 🙂

A Christmas Update — December 17, 2018

A Christmas Update

As some of you may have noticed, I have been pretty quiet lately! In fact, it has seemed so long since I’ve written a blog post, it feels weird, especially as there are some changes to WordPress which I am getting to grips with.

Anyway, I thought that I would give you an update as to what has been happening with me. firstly, I am nearing the end of my 2nd year as a student nurse. It seems unbelievable that the time has passed by so quickly (well at least it has for me)! I just have one more placement to do, a couple more assignments, oh and an exam, but by the end of March, it will all be done and fingers crossed, I will be ready to enter my third and final year!

In amongst all the stress and madness of studying, we decided to move house as well! I may have mentioned once or twice how much I love being near the sea, well I am now living in a little seaside town and am only about a 10 min walk from the sea. One of my sisters has also moved to the coast around a 10 min drive away to the same town (where this photo was taken) as one of my brothers, and my other sister lives a further 10 mins down the coast in Folkestone. Despite it being the middle of winter, I am already feeling the benefits of the move and feel much more motivated to go for walks and enjoy the fresh air, even if it is a bit, well…fresh at the moment!

I have tried to keep my hand in with blogging now and again, particularly my collaborations with Daffy. There will definitely be more Silly Saturdays to come. I truly do not know where the time goes and have got so behind with everyone’s blogs. I will be trying to catch up with you all over the next couple of weeks to see what you all have been up to. I have really missed you. I am also going to try and write a few posts during that time as well, I am sure there must be some poems inside me screaming to be let loose!

We haven’t done a Silly Saturday for a while, but I couldn’t resist joining in when Daffy showed me this brilliant photo….

Randy was now in disgrace

At Christmas he got ‘off his face’

Whilst pulling Santa’s sleigh

He went the wrong way

He was lurching all over the place

He’d been partaking of too many beers

Which isn’t good for reindeers

Turning up for work plastered

Could only lead to disaster

As it affected the way that he steers

He is hoping to go back to work

He promised that he will no longer shirk

With his lopsided antler

He can expect plenty of banter

As he looks a bit of a berk!

#Sillysaturday Health Petra the Pear — September 1, 2018

#Sillysaturday Health Petra the Pear

pear with rotten teeth!

This week’s Silly Saturday is all about a poorly pear named Petra. After several comments about Tom the tomato possibly being a good example to use to encourage people to look after their teeth, we thought it would be fun to introduce a couple of #SillySaturday Health posts. Although there is still the usual silliness you can expect from us both, there is also a serious side too. Anyway, please let us know what you think of this idea.

Petra the pear was feeling poorly

She didn’t know quite what to do

Not only was she putting some weight on

But she was suffering from toothache too!

She had started to let her self go a bit

Indulging in too many treats

The sugary snacks made her teeth hurt

Causing trouble whenever she eats!

For too many years she’d been smoking

Which caused her teeth to go brown

Her gums receding and bleeding

It was time to turn things around.

She wanted her life to be fruitful

And continue her family tree

But she had to make sure she was healthy

And in the best shape she could be

First stop was to the doctors

To get help with giving up smoking

The harm it was causing her body

Was both sobering and thought-provoking

As if heart disease and strokes weren’t enough

It could cause breathing problems as well

Tooth loss, fertility problems and cancer

Not to mention the horrible smell

She decided to go for the patches

And started the very next day

She found that her nicotine cravings

Were slowly melting away.

Next stop was to the dentists

To see if something could brighten her smile

Because her teeth were so neglected

It was going to take a little while

It was not just about brushing and flossing

That Petra had neglected to do

But her sugary addiction

Had helped in her tooth decay too

Th dentist took some impressions

And gave Petra’s mouth a good clean

She was advised not just to clean the outside

But all around, underneath and between.

It was too late for poor Petra

To save some of the teeth that she had

She had to make some appointments

To remove the ones that were bad

Several months later and Petra is glowing

Her smile now so fresh and so bright

She cleans her teeth like an expert

Even the ones she takes out at night!
