As some of you may know I have almost come to the end of my first year as a Student Nurse. I have written a poem about my journey so far here. I would just like to give a shout out to a very special person that helped me by proofreading a few of my drafts. She painstakingly read through what must have been pretty tedious, not to mention badly written pages of text . Wendy, thank you so much, I really did appreciate what you did or me, and apologise for the quality of some of those drafts!
Although I feel exhausted
And have shed some bitter tears
I am proud to have made it this far
And got through the first of three long years!
Assignments have been tricky
Yet I thought I would do quite well
But I was badly out of practice
And one of them I failed.
My placements have been busy
With so much to see and do
Signing off skills I have accomplished
And learning maggot therapy too!
I got to know so many people
In the short time I was there
But I feel very privileged
To have been a small part of their care.
Becoming a nurse wonโt be easy
But I know, at least for me
That I am doing the right thing
And itโs still what I want to be!
Brilliant post Judy I love the poem . You are doing so well , you will make a great nurse. ๐

Thanks Daffy, yes we put maggots on a patient’s nasty leg ulcer, and they cleaned it up quite a lot! I am battling onwards and hope that year two goes as quickly! ๐

Cngratulations, Judy… that is a wonderful achievement! I hate to mention maggots (believe me, I really do!) but between them and leeches, some of the old practices still work better than we’d like to think ๐

Yes I have to agree. You would have been proud of me Sue, I got right on in there with applying the maggots and (worse) removing them when they were fat with dead tissue! I was not squeamish until I thought about it afterwards! ๐คข๐คช

That is probably the one thing that would put me off nursing altogether…much of the rest I have handled as a mother and carer over the years… but the maggots and me have history. Ever since my brother cuddled a bag of them close to his chest on the bus one day to keep them warm…or my uncle sucked them… both to mae them wriggle. Or my son let several pints of the things escape his fishing kit and wriggle into my carpet…

Well done, Judy – I still miss it every day! Best job in the world and I always felt so privileged to make a slight difference….even using leeches on the plastic surgery flaps!!!

I consider myself lucky so lucky to be given this opportunity, Claire. I have yet to come across leeches, but it is still early days ….

A splendid post, Judy. We all face a bit of failure now and then on our path to success. I failed an exam during my degree too and I was devastated. I passed eventually with distinction so don’t let it bother you to much. Hugs.

Thanks, Robbie. I must say it knocked me sideways, especially as it was the first result we got back! Still, I have re-written it now and hope that I can put it behind me. It is good to know that although it devastated you, it did not stop you from obtaining your degree, far from it! Hugs back to you ๐

Hi Judy,
You should be done with your nursing program now and working hard. What a time to be a nurse! I hope you are safe and doing well. I notice that you had responses from so many people I have met on Colleen’s blog and across the blogosphere. It was fun reading all their encouraging words to you. M

Hi. Yes I qualified in April and have been working as a community nurse. It has been pretty full on but I love it. I have built up such a wonderful blogging family and have missed them all so much as I have not been able to blog as much as I wanted. I am going to make an effort to get back to it. I am really pleased you have brought back Writer’s Quote on Wednesday and will try and join in again. ๐

This is me!
Judy E Martin
Hello, and thanks for stopping by. I am Judy, in my (very) early fifties and decided that life definitely gets more interesting as it goes on! I am a wife and a mum and have just finished University as a Registered Nurse, after having worked as an Associate Practitioner in the NHS. I am also a poet and the author of my debut book, 'Rhymes of the Times.' I love to laugh, and I love rhyming words too, so I joined the two together, and my book was born. I am currently working on another book in the series also. I am a prolific blogger and enjoy writing funny stories, anecdotes, and anything really that takes my fancy.
