Becoming a Nurse One Year On — March 11, 2018

Becoming a Nurse One Year On

As some of you may know I have almost come to the end of my first year as a Student Nurse. I have written a poem about my journey so far here.  I would just like to give a shout out to a very special person that helped me by proofreading a few of my drafts. She painstakingly read through what must have been pretty tedious, not to mention badly written pages of text . Wendy, thank you so much, I really did appreciate what you did or me, and apologise for the quality of some of those drafts!

Although I feel exhausted

And have shed some bitter tears

I am proud to have made it this far

And got through the first of three long years!

Assignments have been tricky

Yet I thought I would do quite well

But I was badly out of practice

And one of them I failed.

My placements have been busy

With so much to see and do

Signing off skills I have accomplished

And learning maggot therapy too!

I got to know so many people

In the short time I was there

But I feel very privileged

To have been a small part of their care.

Becoming a nurse won’t be easy

But I know, at least for me

That I am doing the right thing

And it’s still what I want to be!

Cold and Miserable! — March 15, 2016

Cold and Miserable!

Oh, my nose is so drippy

And my throat is all scratchy and sore

I am constantly sneezing

And my nose has been wiped till it is raw

One minute I’m cold and all shivery

And feel like I’m going to freeze

The next I am a raging inferno

And I’m performing a fevered striptease!

I’ve had enough of this cold now

And being all sniffy and snotty

I just want to start feeling better

Instead of looking and feeling so grotty!

Hopefully, it will be gone soon

As it has been hanging around for too long

It is time for it to move on now

And bugger off to where it came from!

Feeling Fabulous at Fifty! — February 16, 2016

Feeling Fabulous at Fifty!

Fabulous

Today is the day I turn fifty

And I am not going to get all depressed

There are plenty of things to look forward to

And these are the ones I like best!

You are handy to have in a pub quiz

You know all the old movies and songs

Your trivia knowledge is awesome

Because you’ve been around for so long!

You are allowed to be quite eccentric

Nobody minds if you’re odd

They just think you are a bit quirky

Or perhaps just a silly old sod!

You don’t have to always look glamorous

Because nobody looks anymore

You don’t have to spend hours getting ready

Before you can step out the door.

So although I’ve reach that half century

I’ve see no need to be sad

For I still feel life is for living

And there’s lots more fun to be had!

Waiting for Spring — February 2, 2016

Waiting for Spring

Thistles!

I thought I would join in with Carole’s idea of writing a short poem with spring as the theme.

Longer days are coming

Bright and sunny early dawns

Nature shrugs off winter

As it stretches and it yawns

Waking from a slumber

Dusting off the gloom

Time to come alive now,

To blossom and to bloom

Spring has brought new outfits

For all the naked trees

Flowers are making pollen

To please the busy bees

Birds are coming home now

It time to meet a mate

It looks like spring is coming

And I for one, can’t wait!

My Goals for 2016! — December 29, 2015

My Goals for 2016!

Now that I’ve given up smoking

And have long since ditched all the booze

I see no need for resolutions

They only give me the blues

I hardly have any vices

I gave them all up long ago

Except of course over-eating

I never know when to say no!

I always eat lots for comfort

When I am under duress

Then get mad when I find out

That I am bursting out of my dress!

I need to find some new ideas

To kick off twenty-sixteen

So I can stop all this gorging

And go from stocky to lean

I have to find motivation

To make it all a success

Then, this time next year

I will weigh a couple of stone less!

Creative Differences — October 26, 2015

Creative Differences

I am jealous of those that are crafty

They make something out of nothing at all

I am hopeless at painting

In fact I can’t even draw!

So many times I’ve been scuppered

By my lack of artistic prowess

I wish I could master home sewing

And knock up a beautiful dress

My hair looks totally unstylish

It is either up or it’s down

My makeup I keep understated

Or I’ll end up like Coco the Clown!

I love to get gorgeous flowers

But just plonk them straight in a vase

My presentation is seriously lacking

I won’t get any gold stars!

Although I will never be arty

I don’t consider it a curse

Because I can still be creative

By writing a few lines of verse!

Episode 57: Oh No, Christmas Is Coming! — November 26, 2014

Episode 57: Oh No, Christmas Is Coming!

There’s only 4 weeks until Christmas

And I’ve not even started my shop

No presents, no food, and no booze yet

I don’t even have any pop!

The town is all lit up and sparkling

Santa’s grotto has also arrived

The shops are blaring out music

The old Christmas favourites revived!

All the heart-warming adverts on TV

They are sure to bring a tear to the eye

But my festive spirit is lacking

And I’ve not even made a mince pie!

I really need to get started

There are so many things still to get

I will make more of an effort

But it’s still not  December yet!
