Melting point – #WQWWC

A wonderful poem that is so heart-warming! 🙂

Sue Vincent's avatarSue Vincent's Daily Echo

garden 2012 006

It was already hot, only dawn and I’m melting

The sun in the heavens is already pelting

I want to crawl into the fridge to keep cool

I am staying indoors, I am nobody’s fool.

*

But in that I am wrong, for I do have a duty…

My son is my boss though, in that there is beauty.

He will understand that I’m achy and hot

He is bound to be gentle with Mum, is he not?

*

He’s all bright and smiley, he likes the hot weather,

I’m wilting and limp, but I keep it together…

“Let’s garden today,” said my son and employer.

Is that in my contract…perhaps get a lawyer?

*

He feeds me with honey for energy levels

Then says something nice, he’s a sneaky young devil

He plies me with compliments, even says ‘please’…

Then I’m out with the rose bushes, spiders and bees.

Writer’s Quote Wednesday Writing Challenge – Hope

This week Ronovan has given us the lovely prompt word ‘hope’ for his and Colleen’s Writer’s Quote Challenge.

The quote I have chosen is particularly apt in so many ways….

I don’t think of all the misery, but of the beauty that still remains.

–  Anne Frank

When rain blocks out the sunshine

And dampens down the day

A rainbow shows its colours

And brightens up the grey

The night sky so foreboding

Shadowy and dark

The moon and stars start playing

Causing illuminating sparks

A young family on the breadline

Trying to make ends meet

Dad has bought some sweets home

Just to give them a little treat

The little boy with cancer

Who is struggling to survive

His parents treasure every day

Their precious son is alive

A woman longing for a baby

Who has tried for so many years

Then her prayers are answered

As the thin blue line appears

Wars and terror divide us

We need unity, hope and faith

Together, we can make a difference

To make this world a better place

Writers Quote Wednesday Writing Challenge – Memories

It is Colleen’s turn again this week for hers and Ronovan’s Writer’s Quote on Wednesday Challenge. She has given us ‘memories’ as our prompt word. I have found the perfect quote to base my poem on this week:

Sometimes you will never know the value of a moment until it becomes a memory.

–  Dr Seuss

I remember going to my Nan’s house

When I was very small

Her and my aunty were so strict

I would hardly talk at all!

Yet she would bring us cups of cocoa

and lay on lots of food

But I was on my best behaviour

It wouldn’t do to be rude!

Walking around the harbour

Days spent on the beach

Those carefree days of childhood

That are so now far out of reach.

Long and nauseous coach rides,

Those made me feel so bad

But in the end were worth it

As I got to see my Dad!

Childhood friends and fun times

Muddy and soaking wet

Giggling with my girlfriends

Over a gorgeous boy I’d met!

My first job in the café

The worst waitress that ever was

Trying to avoid the groping hands

Of my rather randy boss!

Married for the first time-

Then the second, now number three

Giving birth to a daughter

Spending time with family

Finally passing my driving test

Life is full of moments

that have meant so much to me

And they are always with me

As my precious memories.

Thank you Sue for this wonderful opportunity to talk about Mum’s recently published book ‘My Vibrating Vertebrae: and other poems’.

Before I do though, I’d also like to thank two other special people:

My little sister, Lorna, for finding, compiling and typing all Mum’s poems she could find before sending them to me for further action. I know this was a true labour of love for her.

My lovely author friend and editor, Jo Robinson, for doing such a great job of arranging, editing and formatting Mum’s poems while maintaining Mum’s ‘Voice’ – Not the easiest of things to do, especially when not familiar with some of the Ulster / Scots terminology used by everyone in Mum’s home town, even I struggle with it sometimes and I lived there for 27 years before leaving for other lands and climes.

99-word story – Christmas Dinner —

99-word story – Christmas Dinner

Me and Dr Meg gave Al some silly prompt words… Look what a great story he made out of them and in only 99 words too! 🙂

Al Lane's avatarA Certain Point of View

I know it’s the middle of summer, but this is a mix of two prompts from my friends Meg (“Plonker!”) and Judy (“knickers!”)… the story itself is true enough!

Family Christmas dinners were awful… So dull. So polite. All please and thank yous, with the same routines every year.

In the kitchen, the turkey wasn’t quite cooked, and Millie was getting tense, despite (because of) Peter’s attempts to help. “No! You… Plonker!”

In the living room, Ella raised an eyebrow. This was most unusual!

Something could be heard falling, clattering from the hob.

“Oh… Knickers!”

Two eyebrows.

As dinner was served, Millie spilled red wine on the carpet.

“Oh… SHIT! “

Ella’s face didn’t move a muscle, but inside she rofld, she danced, she cheered.

Best. Christmas. Ever.

Writer’s Quote Wednesday Writing Challenge – Beauty —

Writer’s Quote Wednesday Writing Challenge – Beauty

Ron is in charge of the prompt word this week for the Writer’s Quote Challenge that he and Colleen host, and has given us ‘beauty’ to work with. I already had an idea of how I was going to go with this, and the following quote matches it perfectly:

Everything has beauty, but not everyone sees it.

–  Confucius

When you think of beauty

What is it you see?

The woman with a six-inch scar

From where her breast used to be

The old man at the graveside

Of where his wife now rests

The charity serving dinner

For their homeless special guests

The brightly coloured birthday card

Your children made for you

The moment at a wedding

When the couple say, “I do”

A song heard on the radio

That has blown away the years

The birth of a newborn baby

As it cries its first real tears

The bashed and battered teddy bear

You’ve had since you were a child

The home that you grew up in

The garden now overgrown and wild

When you think of beauty

What is it you see?

The world is full of beauty

Or at least, it is to me.

“But…but…but…THAT”S not YOUR name as the Author!” I hear you declare indignantly…

That’s TRUE – I’M not the AUTHOR, my Mother is, but unfortunately she is not alive to publish it herself, (she died in 2000), so I’ve published it in her name.

Today would have been Mum’s 90th birthday if she’d still been alive, so my sister and I felt that this book would be a nice way to celebrate Mum’s life and memory.

What’s it about?

As stated in the book description:

We all have dreams, loves and hopes; but what if you are a girl growing up in 20th century Northern Ireland before, during and after the ‘Troubles’?
From the poetic thoughts of our Mother, we get a sense of what it was like, ranging from humour, sadness, wistful thinking and sometimes just downright nonsensical, these are the words of one such girl.

Each poem tells a story.
