When Miss Hap started secondary school in September, we decided that she would have school dinners rather than packed lunches. I was really surprised when I learned that her thumb had to be scanned as the technology used to determine how much money was available for meals would be determined by her thumb print linking to the account I paid the money into for her meals.
This is such a far cry from when I was at school. At primary school I think parent gave the money direct to the school as I don’t remember giving anything in, At break time in the morning, all of the kids had a free quarter of a pint bottle of milk. This was not always cold, and I do remember it used to taste a little ‘tangy’ at times, but we drank it!
Funnily enough, we ate and drank everything given to us as there really was no choice! for our lunch (or dinner) as we called it, we had a hot meal which usually consisted of meat, two veg and potato of some kind, followed by a pudding.
It was all dished (or slopped) out by a large, surly dinner lady you did not dare argue with, You then sat at your table and pretty much ate all you could. You would get told off for not eating your greens and very often told to eat it whether you wanted to or not. Occasionally there were even ‘seconds’ where you could go up for another dollop of food if you felt brave!
In secondary school. I used to have a packed lunch that I had eaten way before lunch time and usually before break! I had a couple of jam, paste or sandwich spread sandwiches and that was it! No crisps, yogurt, fruit or drinks for us! Ooh no, there was a water fountain at school if we wanted a drink.
Now, school dinners are so much more sophisticated. They have a varied and extensive menu, almost like you would see in a restaurant. They can pick and choose what they want to eat and there is no-one standing over them telling t hem to ‘eat their greens’. Presumably, children are considered to be more educated on healthy eating than we were.
It’s funny though. I was never overweight as a child despite eating everything that was put in front of me, but nowadays we have a huge obesity problem in children!

I do so wish they had thumbprint scans at my children’s school! Clever!
This year, our entire township eats on the taxpayer’s dime, as one in seven children in our community are food insecure. Since it is free, the girls mostly eat school lunch, but sometimes they do still pack. There are certain meals they say are Dis-GUS-ting! in the way that tweens do.
The meals I’ve seen have been a long way from the wholesome meals I recall. Cookies as big as my hand were never part of lunch…

I believe that in the UK we are introducing free school dinners for all 5 year olds which is a good thing!

When I was a kid, I was always jealous of the kids who purchased lunch. My sweet Granny made mine so I was always the awkward kid with the headcheese or liversausage sandwich.
My little boy packs Lunchables since he refuses to eat either cafeteria food or any form of sandwich. Not the healthiest food, I know. But at least I know he eats that way.

Oh poor you with your stinky sarnies! My daughter does not always choose the hot meal I pay for, she sometimes goes for pastries and fizzy drinks instead!

I went to my son’s lunch and it was horrible. New initiative make them serve only healthy food. Lots of kids don’t eat what is served. The fruit choice that day was an under-ripe pear. One that wouldn’t be edible for days.

I remember five cents for milk and ten cents for chocolate milk. I loved it when my mum volunteered to pour the milk from those metal jugs (cause she gave me the leftovers!). I still have a jug like that and I will never part with it.

What a great memory and fantastic to have a similar jug to what your mum had.

The increase in obesity in children is due to the huge amount of sugary foods and sweet fizzy drink sold in shops and supermarkets, to the proliferation of fast food and sitting in front of the internet following facebook etcetera or watching too much television instead of playing outside or doing something constructive.

Yes I am quite aware of why children have such a problem with obesity now, and it is such a dreadful shame. I was actually making a tongue-in-cheek remark at the end of my post. 🙂

I remember the little milk bottles! We used to get biscuits too! And I was at a private school…(Oooh! Get me!) so,our lunches were pretty fab, I have to say, but you’re right, the variety nowadays is immense! I suppose it gives pride a chance to try all manner of foods they might not get at home along with the traditional meals too!

That is too much of smartness 😐 We used to have mainly packed lunches at school which basically turned out to be a daily potluck 🙂 Too much sophistication makes it less fun

It’s all packed lunches down here, and I assure you, they’re way more gourmet than anything I ever got. Last week my kids asked if they could have a break from the gourmet stuff I prepare and just have plain jam sandwiches for a couple of days… happy to oblige!
