I Won!!! — November 20, 2015

I Won!!!

I can’t believe I did it, but I won the NaNoWriMo Challenge! Last night I completed just over 50 000 words of the Novelette that I had wanted to write.

I decided to set myself the challenge after being inspired by so many of my blogging friends. I have never written anything other than poems really, but there was a story that I wanted to tell, and have done for some time. I have been quietly picking up hints and tips from the established authors we have among us here on WordPress.

The one piece of advice that I had from a few different people was just to write, get it all down and the editing process can come later, so that is what I did. Every night I set aside two hours after work where I would write, and at weekends, I would do as much as I could at any opportunity I got. It paid off because I have got there a little earlier than expected!

So I have got the bare bones of my story, a little jumbled up perhaps; character names have changed over the course of it, but that is down to me getting carried away and not checking my notebook properly I have got a hell of a lot of work to do if I do want to try and make something of it, but that is for later on.

I thought this challenge was particularly relevant to me now as it is coming up to my 50th birthday (Sssh, yes I know I don’t look a day over 65), and it is something that I can be proud of achieving before reaching that terrifying (to me) milestone!

Anyway, I did it and I beyond thrilled!  Now that is enough of the trumpet blowing, I shall be back in the land of blog soon. It is funny how much I missed you all  despite managing to get a couple of posts in.  Thanks again, for all of your encouragement and support. it really helped to spur me on!

Wacky Word Wednesday — November 18, 2015

Wacky Word Wednesday

I do love Wednesdays when I can highlight a little-used work, give it a shake off and dust up ready for its chance to shine. The word I have chosen this week is a wonderful little word that is one of my mum’s favourites.

Twee. This is a fussy little word, all prim and proper, present and correct, quietly quaint, in its affected overly ‘nice’ manner. Gracious to a fault yet prudish, minding its p’s and q’s in its banality.

The net curtain twitcher, peeping out of the windows of a dainty, chi-chi house which is fastidiously neat and tidy. It is pretentious, la-di-da, very lady of the manor.

It is one word that I certainly cannot be accused of being!

Let’s build a chain of love! — November 15, 2015
A Little Update —

A Little Update

I wanted to write a short post to update you on how things are going now that it is just over the midway point for NaNoWriMo. I have managed to plough full speed ahead at the moment and have so far reached the dizzying heights of 36 858 words! I am beyond thrilled to be on target to complete the challenge, plus write my first ever novelette (well if it is worth editing I will at least)!!

I have also been lucky enough to have won a cover designed by the hugely talented  author Jo Robinson. I am not going to reveal it on my blog until the end of November, but suffice it to say, it not only fits my book perfectly but is absolutely stunning.

As far as work goes, apart from being shattered when I get home (still not used to full-time yet), I am enjoying it. My main problem at the ment is finding my way around some of the more rural areas.

On Friday I got totally lost! I had given myself plenty of time to get to this address which I knew was somewhere out in the countryside. Mr Satnav guided me out into the middle of nowhere. The roads were getting smaller and smaller as I meandered higher and higher through the North downs. I eventually found a little cluster of houses which was my ‘destination.’ None of them had the house name I was looking for so I kept going.

Tim my Satnav friend was cross and demanded I ‘turn around’, Easier said than done with those skinny roads! I did eventually head back down to the same cluster of houses, and seeing a man outside accosted him, asking him for his postcode, He confirmed that it was the same as the one I had been given but there was no house name around there with the name I was looking for.

Frustrated, I phoned the office to check the postcode, Needless to say, the  systems were down but they found it on a printout and it was as I had already got. I phoned the patient who told me he was just by the pub, That was good news as I had passed a pub not too far away,

I went back there and still nothing. I saw a man walking along the road and asked him if he knew of the house. He didn’t, He was friendly though and I phoned my patient back for directions from the pub, and realised that it was a totally different one altogether! Luckily that man I had asked knew of it, but it was a little ‘complicated’ to get to! Well, of course it would be.

His directions were brilliant though and I finally found the place I was looking for. My patient was highly amused to hear of my little jaunt in the country as the motorway was literally around the corner! I could have made the trip in less than half the time it took me in the end! The ‘Y’ on the postcode was actually a ‘U’ and that little letter made one hell of a big difference!

Wacky Word Wednesday! — November 11, 2015

Wacky Word Wednesday!

I have been a little lax with my Wacky Word Wednesday lately as I have been a bit pushed for time, one way or another, but today I have found I have got a few spare minutes which is perfect for me to find another wonderful, weird or wacky word to share. This word had a wonderful onomatopoeic quality to it, which although needs little explanation, is going to get it anyway.

Smarmy. Yes, this is a rather slimy and slick type of word. The greasy, grovelling salesman, fawning over and flattering his (for some reason, women are rarely smarmy) customers.  It is being overly  ingratiating, bowing and scraping in a sycophantic manner.

A cheesy grin, over familiar manner, and irritating personality are the main credentials needed. They preen and primp, as they sidle up to their prey, superior and smug. God’s gift to the ladies, with their practised charm and unctuous manner. All in all, a bit of a prat really!

Out on My Own! — November 8, 2015

Out on My Own!

I have really enjoyed my first week out and about visiting patients on my own. It has been pretty scary in some ways, I have gone from being secure in the knowledge of knowing my job well to the point of being able to teach others to the newbie, asking stupid questions and feeling,  as well as looking like a dunce being unfamiliar with some of the techniques which might be basic in the community, but I had not encountered to the same degree in hospital.

Anyway, my first day doing visits was absolutely brilliant. The patient lived about two minutes drive from me which meant I did not have to leave that early to get there for 8.30 (that is weird as well, as I get to lie in till 6.30 in the morning and still have plenty of time)! I also get to see Miss Hap off to school which means that Mr Grump buggers off out of it at 7.30 and leaves me to shout up at regular intervals to wake her up from 7am onwards and then chivvy her along until her friend arrives for her at 7:50 to catch the bus.

I fussed around arranging everything neatly in the boot of my car, made sure I had a flask of coffee to keep me going and of course, lunch. I arrived a couple of minutes early, grabbed my paperwork and bag and nervously knocked on the door. I was met by an elderly man who welcomed me into their house, His wife, my patient was very pleasant and smiley as I introduced myself, and we went upstairs so that I could look at her wound that I was there to dress. Her husband shouted up asking me if I wanted a cuppa which of course I did, and the whole visit went well.

The next day though I drove up and down a busy dual carriageway looking for somewhere to no avail. When I finally found it, I realised I had driven past it about three times already! I also woke someone up who was none too pleased to see me, I am not surprised as I had gone to the wrong house! I had got the door numbers mixed up, Luckily someone was waving frantically at me from the other side of the road, who had seen me marching up to the wrong house and realised that it was her son that I should be seeing.

I apologised to the man I had woken and made me my across the road to the correct address. I knew that I was there to do a blood test on an anxious patient, What I did not realise though, but was told just before I went to take it, was that there was a strong likelihood that he might faint or at the very least, throw up. Great! Now I was even more nervous in case I didn’t get it or he flaked out on me! Luckily neither happened, I got my bloods and he got to remain conscious, just how I like it!

A little later on in the week I had to re-visit some of my earlier patients to re-check their wounds, and I was told that these people were going to be my caseload, I was thrilled to have my own patients, especially when I went back out on Friday to the lovely couple I went to on my very first visit,

This time, the husband came to the door in his dressing gown, but I still got the warm welcome and his wife shouted down to me to come up, they had remembered my name which really pleased me. Once I had dressed the wound and had my cuppa, the patient asked if it would be me that always came. I explained that it would although now and again someone else might come, Her reaction was to tell me how pleased she was and that it called for a hug and a kiss!

On Wednesday things went a bit awry, I woke up and looked at my phone only to see it was 7:20! I had not been up on a working day that late in a decade probably!  Mr Grump’s alarm had failed to go off and I didn’t bother setting mine. I yelled out to Miss Hap that it was 7.30 and to get up. She told me nonchalantly that it was only 7.20 anyway!

Well, both Mr Grump and I were stressed, and falling over each other in the bathroom trying to get washed and dressed. I know I wasn’t actually late, but being a creature of habit, I was put out completely having to rush around to get ready. Grump was cross and more crabby than usual but luckily cleared off to take Roxy out for her walk, giving me chance to get on.

It has been quite an eventful week for me, but am looking forward to next week!

Hugh’s Views and News Photo Challenge: Week 5 . Pair — November 7, 2015

Hugh’s Views and News Photo Challenge: Week 5 . Pair

Hugh is already in his fifth week of the photo challenge he created. I have enjoyed participating in this as it is fun trying to fit the photo to the word, or vice versa! I love the poached eggs on toast  pic on his blog – what a lovely pair!

My entry for this week is much more conventional, being a pair of shoes! However, these are real skyscrapers and something that my niece loves to wear,

I know I am getting older now as I had to jam my poor toes into the narrow shoe and had Mr Grump haul me up! My knee clicked in protest as I rose to the tallest I have ever been in my life, probably about 5ft 8 or 9 as I was even taller than old Grump!

I had to hold onto the door whilst he took the photo as I could barely balance on them let alone walk.No sexy wiggle for me in my heels, more of an arthritic hobble followed by an almighty fall I shouldn’t wonder!

TJ’s Household Haiku Challenge – Photgraph

Happy Bloggy Anniversary to TJ whose blog has just passed its first year. For this week’s Household Haiku Challenge we get to choose from any of the categories that have gone before, I have chosen ‘photograph.’ No, I am not crazy choosing this subject with my limited photography skills, it is one that was taken by a professional (over 100 years ago). It is a photo of my paternal grandmother and my great aunt.

Halloween Blog Party!

Come on over to Suzie’s place. she has got a great Halloween party on the go.

suzie81speaks's avatarSuzie Speaks

Halloween blog partyIt’s Halloween, and while many people are preparing for a party with their loved ones, or getting ready to go trick-or-treating and annoying their neighbours, I thought it would be a fun idea to host a virtual party here in the blogosphere.

For those of you who have never participated in a blog party before, the rules are simple (PLEASE READ THESE FIRST BEFORE POSTING)…

1. Choose your favourite post from your own blog. The subject of the post can be anything you like – blogging, food, parenting, life, travel, thoughts, photography… Note: This should be only one post at a time or it will get sent straight to the ‘spam’ folder and I may not be able to find you for a while. You can share up to three links, and for maximum impact I would suggest that you wait a little while in between posting them rather…
