Episode 266: Ferry Good Advice! — March 31, 2015

Episode 266: Ferry Good Advice!

I have just seen the funniest safety advice video, which has really brightened up my evening! Condor Ferries wanted to get their message across in a way that would appeal to all members of the family, and they decided that the best way to do this would be a rap!

The Captain and two of his ‘crew’ have set their rap to the tune of ‘Good Times’ by Chic. (Well it is kind of). The appalling dancing, mis-timed words and cheesy grins only adds to the appeal of this for me!

One of the lines refers to ensuring a clufe jacket is on properly and goes something like…

‘..just listen for the click

Then you know you have it on properly

And you’re looking rather hip!’

I can think of a better rhyme for what they look like in those life jackets but it would not be kind, and apparently, a lot of work has gone into the concept of this safety video. It even has some snazzy graphics for your entertainment,

Anyway, without further adom I present to you ‘Good Times’ by the Condor Ferries Crew.

Episode 265: Bodge-It and Scarper! —

Episode 265: Bodge-It and Scarper!

Don’t you just love workmen? Usually if anything needs to be repaired or work needs to be done, then I prefer it if Mr Grump is here, and can deal with the workmen. I never have a clue what they are on about, and I am bad enough at ‘small talk’ as it is. I was out of luck today though.

Enjoying my day off, and after getting some of my chores done, I thought I would watch a bit of the Crime and Investigation channel (I love a good murder story). I heard rather loud knocking on the front door and thought it might be the postman with a parcel.  It wasn’t.

Two workmen informed me that they had come to look at the lock on my door. Ages ago the back door completely refused to lock and we had to get someone to look at it. After a couple of trips out to the house (the first time he didn’t have the right replacement lock) he fixed the door. Well, kind of. It did lock, but he told me it was a little ‘stiff’ and that he would get someone else to come out with an extra part or something. He then handed me these two plates or something that he said they might also need which he had taken off the door!

Well, I had forgotten all about that until ‘Bodge-It and Scarper’ turned up today. After establishing that the ‘broken’ lock was in fact the back door, they stomped through into my front room, getting licked to death by the dog in the process!

After the huge intake of breath and the obligatory remark about who had done the previous work, plus a discussion about what he had done wrong, I decided to sit on the sofa with my tablet, in order not to have to engage with them.

After a bit of drilling and banter with each other, it all suddenly went a bit quiet. Then a conversation ensued that went something like this. (Bodge-it was inside the house, Scarper outside in the garden).

Bodge-It to Scarper: ” No, don’t force it”

Scarper: “It’s not locking!”

B: “Oh, it’s jammed! Hand me that crow bar”

At this point I looked up from my Candy Crush game. Crow bar? What the bloody hell is going on here with these two idiots? They have jammed the bloody door and are now going to prise it open again?

Bodge-It (to me) “Have you got a window here?”

Me (incredulously, as I am sitting on the sofa underneath the bloody great window) “yes.”

B: (to Scarper) ” Can you pass that (insert hooky tool thing name) through the window”

I take the tool through the window and settle myself back into my game.

B: ” Can you hand me the mallet through the window now?”

Christ, now what is going on?! Presumably they are going to knock hell out of the door and beat it into submission….After a few very loud bangs and whacks,

Scarper: “Shit, we are going to be here all day!”

Not bloody likely, I thought. I already didn’t offer them a cup of tea as I usually would, as I did not want to encourage a lengthy visit. Bodge-It must have done something right because the door suddenly opened.

After a bit more messing about, they decided that the lock was now fixed. The two plates were back in place and all was well. They encourage me to come over and lock the door as it was a bit stiff, and I might have to be firm with it for a while until it ‘settled down’. I assured them that it wasn’t a problem as I am renown for being heavy-handed, but they wanted to see me lock the door so I obliged. (Anything to get rid of them).

Mt Grump will be sorry he missed out today!

Episode 264: Snail’s Nails — March 30, 2015

Episode 264: Snail’s Nails

Doing the job that I do, you have to have a pretty strong stomach at times, It is quite ironic really, as I  have always been pretty squeamish! I even have to look away in horror and action movies when there is too much blood and gore, regardless of the fact that of course, it is not real.

Mr Grump is totally the opposite, He loves it. He enjoys a good ‘fly on the wall’ hospital documentary where someone is having half their head drilled, or sawn off before a surgeon delves in and started poking about, pulling things around, or talking bits out. He is thrilled to see broken bones sticking out of skin, and blood pouring out massive wounds, he nudges me to draw my attention to it, but I don’t want to know.

However, when I am at work I can deal with blood, pus, puke, poo, festering wounds and horrible scars. As much as they can be pretty unpleasant at the time, I deal with it, then cringe about it later!

I might have mentioned before that I do not like feet! We have this poor old lady in that had probably not had her toenails cut for well over 10 years. They are so bad that the big toenail is all curled over and ridged, All the other nails are long too and dig into the adjacent toes although the patient says they do not hurt her.

Anyway, yesterday I was helping another member of staff to wash her, and as the patient turned over, she let out a squeal and complained that her toe hurt. Sure enough it was bleeding slightly, We got some dressings quickly and dressed the toe. The huge nail had completely come off in one piece.

Once we had finished I looked in the sheet. There was this huge chunk of nail, almost like an empty snail shell…except that it had a bit of skin still attached to it!…I felt a little queasy!

What makes you squeamish?

Episode 261: In The Summertime…… —

Episode 261: In The Summertime……

British summertime….long hot, balmy evenings, beautiful blue skies, shorts, and little dresses….no chance of that yet! Yes, although British summertime officially began today, it has been a grey old day around here with a good dollop of rain chucked in for good measure as well as a howling wind!

Last night we were to put our clocks forward an hour, to welcome in summertime with an extra hour of daylight in the evening. Now I had to work today, and was worried that my phone (I use that for my alarm) would not automatically update and that I would get up an hour late. I needn’t have worried.

It blasted into life at what was effectively 4:15 this morning! I was groggy eyed and quickly groped for my wristwatch to make sure of the time before cursing and muttering, and dragging myself out of bed.

The night staff were understandably thrilled to be leaving an hour early, but the tired and drawn faces of the rest of the day shift belied the fact that they too had struggled with the loss of that important hour’s sleep!

Anyway, the shift itself was the same as usual, short-staffed and extremely busy, but in my case, peppered with yawns, as I just couldn’t seem to shake of the tiredness, which is silly really being as I went to sleep early to compensate for the ‘lost hour.’

Isn’t it great that due to it being ‘summer time’ now, I get to see another hour of dull grey skies and pouring rain before it gets dark. Things don’t get any better than this!!!!

Episode 260: Is That 20 inch Waist Real? Corset is! — March 28, 2015

Episode 260: Is That 20 inch Waist Real? Corset is!

One of the problems that I have with my figure is my waist (or lack of). Apart from the healthy eating regime I am trying to stick to, I have also taken up hula-hooping (thanks to my blogging pal Ritu), in the hope that I might be able to whittle my waist into some sort of shape.

A young woman from Venezuela however, had trained her waist down to a mere 20 inches! She has done this by wearing a corset for 23 hours a day, over the last six years. Apparently, although it was uncomfortable to begin with, she now loves the feel of the ‘pressure’ at her waist, and has no trouble sleeping in it!

She has had a few bit of plastic surgery as well to …ahem… enhance some of her other assets, and a bit of liposuction in her thighs, but the waist cinching is down to the corset and also eating healthily and exercise.

She is very proud of her hourglass shape and loves the attention that it brings her wherever she goes. In fact she would like to become famous because of her figure. and despite doctors warning her that this extreme corset wearing could damage her body in later life, is determined to keep wearing it.

I have to say, as much as I would love a waist, I think this woman looks a little unusual having such a small waist in comparison to the rest of her.

Do you think she is sexy or scary?

Episode 259: Multi-Tasking or Mayhem? —

Episode 259: Multi-Tasking or Mayhem?

Apparently us women are supposed to be pretty good at multitasking; I think I am to a point, especially when I’m on the phone. Sometimes I can be talking to my sister on the phone for an hour or more, so being able to get on with some other jobs at the same time can come in handy!

I am pretty good at ironing with the phone balanced between right ear and shoulder, as well as carrying on a conversation, likewise dusting and polishing. However, I cannot talk and type, or read at the same time. No, that is definitely too much for my poor little brain to manage at once and the concentration goes completely, so that I am either typing rubbish or talking rubbish (well, more so than usual, anyway)!

I can knit and watch TV at the same time though. Yes, I bet you are impressed with that one. What I need to mention here is that only applies if I am following an easy pattern. If I am counting stitches or something that requires a smidgen of thought, then I usually miss a huge chunk of what happened in the film or programme and drive everyone mad by asking what is going on. Other than that if a juicy bit comes on the TV then I need to watch, then stitches can get dropped, or I have to unpick rows that I have buggered  up!

I can’t do anything else whilst driving, except listen to music, and that has only been a recent thing. I suppose it is due to the fact that I am not keen on driving and feel I need to concentrate. When I used to smoke I rarely had a cigarette whilst driving. I remember once when I did, and the top of the cigarette fell off onto my lap (it was still lit), I was panicking like mad trying to bat at it to put it out, whilst concentrate on the road. I didn’t do that again!

At work of course is a different matter entirely, I am a very good multi-tasker as we all have to be. We are constantly running from one job to the next, and on the way to that job, get grabbed to do another one or two. That with answering the buzzers, and talking to relatives, or other medical staff as you go about your chores, is just part and parcel of the job.

Are you a good multi-tasker, and do you think women are better at it than men?

Episode 258 : Five Photos, Five Stories – Day 5: My Sister’s Sun Lounge —

Episode 258 : Five Photos, Five Stories – Day 5: My Sister’s Sun Lounge

I recently received the following invitation from Author SB Mazing

I’m about to invite you to join in a challenge I recently accepted. Five Photos, Five Stories. I thought this challenge could present you with the opportunity of viewing blogging from a different angle, to do something different, anything that suits you for that matter. It’s entirely up to you. …

The Five Photos, Five Stories Challenge rules require you to post a photo each day for five consecutive days and attach a story to the photo.  It can be fiction or non-fiction, a poem or simply a short paragraph – it’s entirely up to you.

This photo is of my sister’s sun lounge and was taken around Christmas time. As you can see, it has been decorated with lots of  little twigs and sparkling lights. There were also home-made stockings hanging up and an advent calendar. Festive bunting is draped around the room, as well as different coloured and scented candles, It looks beautiful at night especially.

I love this room at my sister and brother-in-law’s house. It is light and airy, and whatever the occasion, is decorated accordingly! At Easter, I know there will be different bunting hanging as well as lots of easter flowers and eggs that have been made,

There is a massive dining table in there are well which fills nearly the whole length of the room. It is always beautifully decorated to suit the festivities and the guests always have a named place setting with a special token or picture that represents them.

They are wonderful hosts and make so much effort to make everyone feel welcome. With my sister being a superb chef and brother-in-law a wonderful musician, there is always great food and great music at theirs as well as a lovely environment!

I would like to invite Mary-Anne from Breathing life

Then each day, nominate another blogger to carry on this challenge.

Accepting the challenge is entirely up to the person nominated, it is not a command. And actually everyone can join in. So feel free to if you like the idea.
