Hugh’s Photo Challenge Week 6: Unused — November 15, 2015

Hugh’s Photo Challenge Week 6: Unused

I had to wrack my poor brains this week for Hugh’s Photo Challenge  as he wanted us to photograph something ‘unused.’

Now that is no mean feat in this house, as everything we have gets used, and if it doesn’t, it is something that is chucked in a cupboard, but has been used.

I know this is a  bit of a cop-out, but it is the only thing I can think of. I bought this dress at the end of the summer as I really love the colours and unusual design. I haven’t had the chance to wear it yet, though, and it still has the tags on it,  so I think this counts as unused!

What I see in a Tree — September 23, 2015

What I see in a Tree

Majestically it stands there

Surveying all it sees

The winter branches barren

Devoid of lush green leaves.

****

Yet life is still within it

Just waiting for the spring

When its buds start blooming

And the birds begin to sing

****

In summer comes its glory

When it wears a party dress

Of several different colours

Its beauty outshines the rest

****

Then autumn comes a-calling

And it starts a slow striptease

The leaves are changing colour

And are dropping in the breeze

****

This is the work of nature

Of death and then re-birth

The barren and the beautiful

The treasures from the earth.

This is a poem I wrote some time ago, that I thought would fit the bill perfectly for my understanding of a vignette, the task for today’s Writing 101 course.

Episode 360: If You Can’t Stand The Heat…. — June 5, 2015

Episode 360: If You Can’t Stand The Heat….

I mentioned before that us Brits like to moan about the weather and are never satisfied! Summer started off as a bit of a damp squib, but today was a balmy 25 degrees Celsius, (around 77 Fahrenheit) and we had a couple of thunderstorms chucked in to mix it up a bit. so it all amounted to a very humid and muggy day with bursts of beautiful hot sunshine

A couple of weeks ago my boss sent my to the laundry as one of the pens had leaked in my dress pocket leaving an unsightly small black blob over my left boob, and she wanted me to go and get it changed. I didn’t dare tell her that the stain on that dress was pretty old and the mess I had made on my dress the day before was much worse. Instead of leaving the ink stain alone (it was one of the gel pens) I decided to rub at it with an antibacterial wipe, thereby spreading this huge black mass over my entire boob!

I went to the laundry and sweet-talked the assistant into letting me have the one dress that was there (not many people wear the same uniform as me) and she put in an order for 3 more which would take a few days to arrive.

That was fine. I dropped off the other dresses the next day and was off last week anyway. I went back to collect my new dresses on Tuesday but was met by a very sour assistant who was not happy that I had managed to swap all my dresses, and moaned that her colleague ‘had only been there 5 mins and didn’t know what she was doing!’ Anyway, she gleefully told me that mine hadn’t arrived and they didn’t have any in my size (which she decided to say out loud).

Great, that left me with one dress. I went back again after a while. still not in. I wore the dress in yesterday and although I did manage to get it washed, was too lazy to iron it this morning so wore my tunic and trousers. It was unbearably hot up on that ward today. Most of us had sweat literally dropping off us (what a shame that fat doesn’t melt off in the heat). I wished I had ironed that dress!

The nice assistant from the laundry phoned me up to let me know that my dresses will not be ready until 17th JULY, for Christ’s sake! When I got home I had a lovely heat rash around my ankle just above my socks. Nice! Looks like that one dress is going to get a lot of wear over the next month and I am going to have to stop being too lazy to iron it I might even have to hope that the weather is grotty again!

Episode 288: One-Liner Wednesday: Grown Up! — April 15, 2015

Episode 288: One-Liner Wednesday: Grown Up!

“Wow, you look so grown up, and absolutely beautiful!”

It is a real job to get Miss Hap into a dress. It seems that leggings and jeans is the stock ‘uniform’ of the tween, much to my despair. I have bought her dresses for various occasions but she is not keen, and rarely wears them. She even has a lovely pair of unworn sandals, preferring to wear Converse shoes or some sort of trainers or another.

Today, we are supposed to get 20 degrees Celsius which for us is a heat wave at this time of year (or any time of year actually). This equates to about 68 Fahrenheit, so is quite warm even now,

I picked out a dress for Miss Hap that she has never worn and asked her to try it on. The above is what I said after seeing her in it. I’ve (temporarily) got my little ladylike girl back)!! Needless to say I got a photo – quick!

Episode 284: Ronovan’s Writes Weekly Haiku Prompt Challenge #40

I am really getting into writing these Haikus (if that is the correct plural). For Ronovan’s Challenge this week we have been given the words ‘time’ and ‘new.’

This is my attempt for this week.

Episode 235: Grumpy Dolly! — March 21, 2015

Episode 235: Grumpy Dolly!

After yesterday’s solar eclipse non-event, (just for the record, this morning at the same time, the sun was out in all its glory) I decided that I would do something constructive with my day off. I haven’t done any sewing for a while, and being still fresh and enthusiastic from watching the ‘Great British Sewing Bee’ plus subscribing to a sewing magazine, I thought it was about time I tried my hand at making something new.

Now, I do not have a fantastic track record with my sewing endeavours,(if i did I would have a sewing blog, showcasing all of my wonderful creations), but I have managed to produce a couple of items that are actually wearable, and anyway practice makes perfect, so I dug around for a suitably ‘easy’ pattern, just to get myself back into the swing of things.

That sorted, I  nagged Mr Grump to come with me to the other side of town to find the new fabric outlet that had recently opened. We eventually found it after trawling around the units on the industrial estate where they were situated (actually the bright pink painted wall outside helped)!

The friendly couple were very chatty and it turned out the lady knew my little sister ‘(the lovely lady with the long, blonde hair and fishtail plait. I get described usually as ‘the stocky one)’ as she used to buy her fabric from the shop my sister worked at some time ago. I bought some fabric and other bits and set off home to start work on it.

This dress is something you are supposed to be able to knock up in an evening, so I thought I would get a head start and cut the pieces out before Miss Hap came in from school. She was going to stay the weekend with my sister who has a caravan on the coast and we were taking her down there in time for dinner.

Anyway, I soon realised that I had miscalculated the amount of fabric needed and was short of about 3/4 of a metre. I was cross so poor old Mr Grump trotted off quickly before they closed (early on a Friday) to get the rest of it so I could get it done last night.

After a lovely visit with my sister and a catch-up we headed home for our dinner then I was going to start my dress. Usually I have my mannequin ‘Dolly’ handy to help me work things out and pin my creations to, but she has been banished to the shed as I have neglected for so long and Mr Grump was sick of her hanging around,

Mr Grump himself, decided to have a few drinks and put a bit of music on (probably to drum out the BBBBBRRRRRRR  of the sewing machine), so he was quite happy, I, however was getting mad. I could not figure out how to put the zip in this dress, and after the fourth failed attempt, and the clock nudging midnight, had decided to take drastic action.

I commandeered Mr Grump to be my Dolly and plonked the dress on him. I just needed to figure out how the zip actually looked when worn, and he was on hand for me to see how to do it. Luckily he had a few drinks under his belt by then, and was suitably anesthetized against any stray pin pricks that my clumsy hands might have inadvertently inflicted on him.

It worked, as I did finally get the zip in, and the dress finished off. It is a bit lumpy and bumpy in places (probably due to me also being lumpy and bumpy in places), but overall I am rather pleased with it! Teamwork eh, isn’t it great?!

Episode 214: Imitation Is The Best Form of Flattery? — March 11, 2015

Episode 214: Imitation Is The Best Form of Flattery?

Many of us have seen something advertised, or admired something that  a famous person has worn and wondered where we could get one. Now a lot of us don’t really have the budget to spend large amounts of money on the ‘designer’ version, so if we see a cheaper one we jump at it. We never learn do we?!

Now, eBay and Amazon very often have things that are similar in style to the original, but you really do have to be realistic about your expectations! For a start the materials used in the knock-off version may be a lot cheaper; fabric may be thinner and not hold its shape, or maybe it is a little more transparent than the original.

We all know that ‘you get what you pay for’. However, I did feel a bit sorry for one poor woman. She ordered a dress that was worn by an actress which was pretty revealing. Now this actress no doubt had access to stylists as well to help her look her best. The woman who bought  the dress which was advertised as ‘soft, comfortable and breathable’ could not wait for it to be delivered.

As soon as it arrived she got straight into it. Being the type of dress it was, no underwear was required as it would spoil the look, but the buyer decided that pink slippers would be a wonderful accessory to showcase the outfit to the best advantage.

She must have been thrilled with how it looked as she immediately posted some pictures of herself on the seller’s website. I admire her, she is one brave woman!

Episode 178: Dressed To Express — February 24, 2015

Episode 178: Dressed To Express

Well today was the ‘Team Building’ day that I had mentioned in my previous post here. I had put on my ‘Minnie Mouse’ dress, grabbed my object that I was going to talk about (my knitted monkey), and managed to cadge a lift (due to broken down car) with two of my colleagues.

It is a beautiful, sunny day again today so the dress was not as inappropriate as I thought.  We managed to get a parking space as well, but because of the time it was quite a long way off so we had a bit of a trek to get to the room on time. Of course, being as I am, I needed to get a coffee so the others went up and I joined the massive queue at the cafe.

This led to me bursting in a little late, but it wasn’t a problem luckily. Anyway we set some ground rules before we started one of which was ‘no eating’. Great, I had brought a couple of sandwiches and a satsuma to keep the hunger pangs at bay, but never mind! The session was really good as it happens. It was great to see some of the people in their own clothes outside of work! We all get on pretty well anyway, so it was quite good fun.

I was pleased that I was not the only dozy one amongst us, as one of our group barged in about an hour into the session having gone to the wrong hospital, in the wrong town (city actually). Bless her she got caught in the rush hour traffic but did eventually turn up.

At one part of the session we all had to talk individually about something, Just as thee boss was going to start, ‘Hey Jude’ blasted out from my handbag! Shit, I had forgotten to turn my phone on silent, which was very unusual as people normally moan that i never hear my phone!

Anyway, we eventually trotted back to the car (by now I was carrying my coat as it was so hot). I came home and decided that I would get changed as I felt a bit ‘trussed up’ (no, I have not been watching ‘Fifty Shades of Grey’) , I took my cardigan off and realised that one of the straps was missing off my dress, nowhere to be found. Gutted.

Pic of the whole dress (strap included)!

Episode 168: Stressing To Impress! — February 17, 2015

Episode 168: Stressing To Impress!

Next week, I have been invited (it is compulsory) to attend a ‘Team Building’ session at work for a whole day of activities. As you may know I work for the NHS, looking after elderly patients. All of the staff have been divided up into three teams headed by a Sister, with Staff Nurses, Associate Nurse (or Practitioner) and Healthcare Assistants.

My dilemma is this: we have been asked to wear clothes that reflect who were are. Hmmmm, this is a bit tricky as I don’t even know who I am yet despite my advancing years! I know that many people are defined by their jobs, but I suspect that is what we are trying to get away from!

I could turn up in my pyjamas. after all, I do seem to spend rather a lot of time in them! When I get home, I like nothing better than to have a nice bath, and get comfy in my PJs. However, I don’t think I have a pair that are suitable for public viewing; even my Betty Boop ones (of which I have many pairs) are a little scruffy now, and a bit short in the leg.

I am well-known for being clumsy, so what about a protective suit of armour? I could make a lovely grand entrance, clanking my way up the stairs and into the lecture theatre! I should imagine it would be a bit heavy, and perhaps movement may be a little restricted. The visor may even be considered a barrier to communicating to my team-mates. Not sure about this one; I may be shielded from accidents but would probably need to be treated for exhaustion, or rust!

My usual clothes are ones that do not set me apart from anyone else in any way really. I do tend to dress in black a lot, and I wear long tops and leggings mostly. It fits quite well with my personality in that I blend into the crowd, I don’t like drawing attention to myself much, and I am still just a little on the shy side.

However, I am trying to come out of myself more. I know all of my colleagues very well, and at work I am more confident, and assertive (I have to be). I was discussing with Mr Grump what he thought summed me up as a person, and he said it just as I was thinking it.

love the 1950s and the fashions that were around at that time, during the summer months, especially on special occasions I wear one of my ‘Hell Bunny’ dresses as I love their designs. I actually own one similar to the photograph which I call my ‘Minnie Mouse’ dress.

I know it is the middle of winter. Yes, it is freezing cold. ‘ll probably have to wear tights and proper shoes as opposed to bare legs and my matching red and white spotty wedges, and of course I’ll need a cardigan or something. Never mind.

It definitely reflects who I am, a bit dotty, utterly inappropriate (I still always burst out laughing at the most inopportune times), and it has hidden depths!

I think it pretty much sums me up!
