Episode 187: Shedding Some Light on the Subject! — February 28, 2015

Episode 187: Shedding Some Light on the Subject!

I know this is a bit controversial but hate those bloody energy lightbulbs! Yes, I know, shocking isn’t it?! (Well they might be if they produced any sort of power).  I am aware about carbon footprints and all that sort of thing, but I do still like the good old-fashioned 60 watt bulb.

I have lived in my house for 11 years now; It was a brand new property which had special fittings in the upstairs landing and hall downstairs for the energy lightbulb. That was all very lovely except for a couple of years later when I had to get a replacement, none of the shops sold them!II had to send off for them and they were pretty expensive at £10 apiece! Compare that to the £1 or so cost for a normal light bulb and you can see one reason I hatred them.

Having a brother who is good with electrics helped as he took out those fittings and put the general ones in, so I could use either standard light bulbs or energy bulbs as the mood took me.

Surprisingly, I do quite often use the energy ones in the hall as have got a little better over the years. It no longer takes about 5 seconds for the light to realise that it has been switched on, and kick into action, It is almost instantaneous nowadays.

A couple of nights ago Miss Hap informed us that we had a power cut, well, kind of anyway. She had turned the light on in the bathroom upstairs (it has a normal light bulb) and it blew causing the lights to all go off. Mr Grump had to climb up to the fuse box and flick the switch back on to restore light.

Anyway Mr Grump fitted a new bulb and all was sweetness (and light) in our household. Well, until I went to have my bath the next morning, I turned on the light to be greeted by this eerie kind of greenish glow. It was pretty horrid and I literally had a quick dip before getting out of there.

Miss Hap also moaned about the light when she went to the bathroom, It was a really ugly low energy lightbulb, with the emphasis on ‘low energy’. We nagged at Mr Grump to change it as it was giving us a headache.

When I came home from work later on, I saw that indeed the bulb was changed, Great, he managed to do one of the chores I had left him before I went to work. During the evening I needed to nip to the loo so I went to the downstairs one,

The eerie greenish glow appeared casting its gloom in the room. It seemed to make everything appear grubby. I was not impressed with this at all. It’s bad enough that it had the audacity to be called a ‘light’ bulb, but to have this almost CSI quality of showing up every speck making everything appear grimy was annoying.

Mr Grump managed to persuade my niece’s fiance to take him shopping today as the weather was appalling and we needed some bits. I decided to leave them to it and didn’t go with them. Big mistake, Not only did they forget to buy some normal light bulbs but they decided to stop off at the pub on the way home for a ‘quick pint’!

It seems that he was running a bit low on energy and needed a bit of perking up himself!

Episode 126: Tired of Not Sleeping! — January 28, 2015

Episode 126: Tired of Not Sleeping!

What do you do to entertain yourself at 3am in the morning when you can’t sleep? It is so annoying You turn over, and over trying to get comfortable…then you need the loo so you stumble out, eyes half closed, get back to bed and…ZING! You are wide awake. That’s the situation I found myself in this morning….

Apart from the fact that I was resentful that both Mr Grump and the dog were snoring contentedly, I was cross because I had a day off and could have had a lie-in (I never do anyway, but in theory I could)!

So it’s off downstairs as there is no point in trying to force something that is just not going to happen. It’s a little chilly downstairs, so I put the kettle on for a nice cup of tea. I don’t however, turn on the heating otherwise the clanking and banging noises it makes as it fires up will wake everyone else up. Anyway I’ve got one of those snuggle blankets with the arms in!

So now what can I do? Well I can catch up with a bit of TV that Mr Grump won’t entertain watching. I particularly enjoy a programme where this ex-hotelier (now bankrupt and unemployed), has been employed as ‘Entertainments Manager’ at another local hotel, as the owners saw his fly on the wall series a couple of years ago when he ran his own hotels (obviously before he lost the lot)!

Anyway, this guy is so funny, as he spectacularly buggers up everything he touches, even though he tries so hard. It makes me laugh, and if I can’t sleep, I might as well be sat there giggling. I flick on my laptop and have a couple of games of ‘Candy Crush’ whilst I am at it as well!

I know some people like to get on with a bit of housework if they can’t sleep but that would not be a great idea where I live. I am too noisy and clumsy to start dusting especially if not fully awake. Plus the walls are so thin in my house that I would have half the square knocking my door, not to mention Mr Grump and Miss Hap, baying for my blood if I dared to vacuum.

No, I didn’t fancy living dangerously,  so I opted for a couple of hours watching telly and playing on my laptop, I was then ready to go back to sleep, which I did… a really deep sleep, so deep that when Miss Hap came in to have a snuggle before school, I woke up with a splitting headache, feeling disoriented, and in a nice bad temper! Oh, and still tired despite eventually getting enough sleep!

What do you do when you just can’t sleep?

Episode 39: Nobody’s Perfect…. — November 9, 2014

Episode 39: Nobody’s Perfect….

We all have our little faults, (some more than others) and I know I certainly have mine! I just got to thinking about the little pet hates that I have…silly little things that really drive me mad…..

People that don’t change the loo roll, preferring instead to leave the empty tube on the holder! Of course you don’t really notice this until you have actually ‘done your business’ and are in need of it! If this happens in my house (which it does all the time), then it’s not too bad as I always make sure there is a supply close at hand, but if you are somewhere else and there is none anywhere, it can be a bit of a problem as you are in rather a vulnerable position!

Leaving milk out of the fridge! This is a real peeve of mine at work…I do like my hot drinks, and the first thing I usually do when I get in is have a coffee. However, it is somewhat  annoying if someone has left the milk out of the fridge, and a hesitant sniff confirms that it has gone off (sometimes it has even gone like cottage cheese)! It really is the ultimate in laziness not bothering to put the milk back once it has been used.

Leaving shoes right behind the front door…I hate it when I get in from work, fling open the front door then nearly get knocked out as it bounces on said shoes, and comes hurtling towards my face.Miss Hap is guilty of this one as she just comes in the door, kicks everything off and leaves it where it lands. This means that once I have avoided concussion from the door, I then have to tread carefully so as not to trip over the school bag chucked on the floor!

Text talk! I hate it when people abbreviate words so much I can hardly understand them when they text e.g.’cul8r m8′ (I do know what that one means now) or something! I know I am old-fashioned and everything, and yes it is a bit of a pain to type out every single word in full , but if someone is going to send me a load of seemingly random letters and numbers put together that doesn’t mean anything to me , then what is the point!!  I would say that mostly younger people tend to do this, but actually my elder sister (in her late 50’s) is one of  the worst offenders. It takes me ages to decipher her messages sometimes!

Soap and flannels! Now I know this one might be a bit controversial, but you’ll understand why in a minute!  Let’s take a bar of soap first. When first opened it is all lovely and solid, and smells nice..but after a bit of use, it becomes all soggy, snotty and slimy. I hate it when I go somewhere and there is a rotten piece of soap on the wash basin, that has seen better days. God knows how long it has been there or who has used it, YUCK! Similarly with flannels.. The problem with these is they are so unhygienic.I know my Mum is a huge fan of the flannel (as are many elderly people) and when she stays with me or my younger sister, the flannel comes out on display in the bathroom (along with the bar of soap I might add). Sometimes it is even draped over the bath! Now the thing with flannels is that they also get very slimy..when I am washing patients at work and they mention they have a flannel, I always offer them the disposable wash clothes that we have instead. I mean some of them only have the one flannel which is used for everywhere! The thought of washing your face with a flannel that has been wiped around sweaty armpits. cheesy feet, not to mention other more ‘intimate’ places, seems to defeat the object of feeling fresh and clean!

My final pet hate was kindly given to me by Mr Grump and is something that annoys him about me! I very rarely eat leftovers (or second-hand food as I call it)! It’s not that there is anything wrong with the food, I just don’t fancy it! Mr Grump qualified many years ago as a chef, so he does cook some really good meals. The thing is once I have eaten and enjoyed it, that is it. If there is any left,I don’t want it again the next day, and if he freezes it and gets it out for another day, it doesn’t look very appetising in the tupperware box, and I don’t want it! Anyway, he eats the leftovers himself so they don’t get wasted.
