Episode 341: Romantic Old Fools! — May 24, 2015

Episode 341: Romantic Old Fools!

Ahhh romance….I remember it well (just about)! As time goes by, it seems to go out of the window a bit; take Valentine’s Day for example, I was not feeling very well this year and it ended up as a bit of a damp squib as you can read here.

Mr Grump does sometimes bring me home some flowers, but he no longer bothers to take off the ‘reduced’ sticker, and I oohh and ahhh over the rather tired looking blooms, happy that at least he thought of me.

We very rarely sit cuddled up on the settee together now watching some sort of romantic movie either. We changed our furniture about 18 months ago and he now has an armchair (yes he is an official Old Git), whilst myself and Miss Hap have the nice big settee to ourselves. Not only that but I nearly always fall asleep watching films (apart from the Disney ones of course)!

Well last night Mr Grump lit the candles as usual but then disappeared off to the shed. I wondered what he was up to, but after a bit of banging and crashing around, he returned triumphant with a load more candles. He faffed about digging out some more candle holders and placed them all over the front room creating a lovely atmosphere.

He informed me that he liked to have things nice for his wife (he had been at the beer). and as Miss Hap had gone upstairs by then thought he would put on a bit of 80s music which I always enjoy. I even got a bit of his ‘twerking’ thrown in as he did here.

After a while of singing along, the mood changed as George Michael’s ‘A Different Corner’ came on. Mr Grump thought it would be nice to have a smoochy dance to it like in the ‘old days.’ Fine, but it isn’t the hold days anymore! I had on my pjs for a start, but I trotted up to him and we had a bit of a dance.

It seems as if we were a bit out of practice though (although shuffling about in a circle is not exactly difficult). I trod on his foot, which meant that he was kind of pinned to the spot, so he told me to,

“get off my slipper!” I did so and he was free to shuffle a bit more. The problem is that going around in a circle after a few beers is a little bit dizzying, and he stumbled landing heavily on my ingrown toenail! Suffice it to say, we decided to sit it out!

Episode 321: RIP ‘You Sexy Thing!’ — May 9, 2015

Episode 321: RIP ‘You Sexy Thing!’

I might have mentioned on more than on occasion that I am a huge fan of the music of yesteryear, namely the 70s and 80s. I was therefore really saddened to hear of the death of Errol Brown, the lead singer of ‘Hot Chocolate’ a few days ago.

Who hasn’t pranced around to the stains of ‘You Sexy Thing.’ thinking it was written about them? Considering it was their best-selling hit and even featured in the film ‘The Full Monty’ (brilliant film), it was amazing to think that it originally started off as a ‘B’ side to another of their records, in the 1970s.

I remember being transfixed watching Errol, as he always seemed to wear rather. ahem, tight trousers which I am sure helped him along when he needed to hit the high notes. He also never seemed to age, looking and sounding the same 30 years after he first started out.

What I also liked about ‘Hot Chocolate’ was the fact that their music got us up dancing (I use that term loosely when it comes to me, but I always had a go) to hits such as ‘Every 1s A Winner’, ‘You Sexy Thing’ and ‘So You Win Again’ to name but a few.

On the flip side, I have been known to have shed a tear to ‘Emma’ and ‘I’ll Put You Together Again.’ They were an extremely versatile group, and Errol was responsible for writing many of their songs.

Although I am sad that Errol is no longer with us, I am grateful that he has left a legacy of such fantastic music behind that will continue to be enjoyed.

Episode 275: Window Shopping! — April 7, 2015

Episode 275: Window Shopping!

It is a lovely day here today with the sun shining, and my cold is a lot better (It has decided it has had enough of me and had gone to settle on Mr Grump instead)! Myself and Miss Hap decided it would be nice to have a quick trip into town and treat ourselves to a very unhealthy breakfast (bang goes the lbs I have lost so far)! I have to say a sausage and egg Mcmuffin really hits the spot when you have been ‘healthy eating’ for a few weeks!

Anyway, we  looked around for a bit and got some odds and ends, then I noticed a lady that did ‘threading.’ Seeing as my eyebrows were a bit straggly I told Miss Hap that I would quickly get them done, Of course. I had forgotten how much it bloody hurts, and needless to say my eyes streamed with water. Before I had properly come back to my senses, she asked about doing my top lip as well.

Oh. I hadn’t realised that it was a moustache in progress. so I told her to go ahead. Having never had this threaded before, I was rather taken aback by the pain! Miss Hap must have noticed my grimacing (I had my eyes screwed tightly shut as well) as she grabbed my hand and squeezed it for comfort, bless her.

That ordeal over with I tried to leave with my dignity intact. but it was not easy with a snotty, runny nose and streaming eyes (I could have put it down to the cold I suppose)! Miss Hap wanted to go to the phone shop to get a replacement sim card as she had damaged it. so we headed there next.

I am never keen on going to these places as they are of course very knowledgeable about phone technology etc and I am a dunce. I asked for the sim , and then the assistant started going on about me being overdue for an upgrade and did I want this or that?! No I bloody didn’t. My daughter gets rather fixated on things and although she already has an iPhone it is not the latest one. She is not getting it either so I did not want him discussing upgrades or I would never hear the last of it.

I looked at him with my blotchy, red, snotty face and told him sternly that I was not prepared to discuss upgrades now, and he decided it might be a good idea to shut up and give me the sim card!

Once we had finished shopping, Miss Hap and I got in the car to come home. Now on the way into town Miss Hap was playing ‘Rapper’s Delight’ (I have very little new stuff in my car). She loves it and knows most of the words, and recently Mr Grump had fitted this huge speaker thing covered in carpet(?) into the back of my car so my stereo sounds quite loud!

She had cranked up the volume and we were both making a nice racket along with the Sugarhill Gang on our journey. However, on the way out of the multi-storey car park I had to Wind my window down to put the ticket in the slot to get out, and it wouldn’t go back up! All the way home I tried to no avail. Miss Hap was not so keen now on the stereo loudly blasting out Leo Sayer’s ‘When I need you’ and I refused to turn it down!

We were lucky it was such a lovely, sunny day and didn’t get soaking wet!

Episode 250: ‘Mum, You Are SO Embarrassing!’ — March 25, 2015

Episode 250: ‘Mum, You Are SO Embarrassing!’

Miss Hap is off on her school trip to France today which she is very excited about. We were informed about the trip almost as soon as she started at the school in September as no doubt, it takes a fair bit of planning sorting out the logistics of it all.

Well the day has arrived, and 76 excited 11-year-old girls are currently haring around Boulogne, practicing their French-speaking and no doubt driving their teachers mad!

I had my orders as to what sort of packed lunch she wanted to take, and I felt it only fair in return to give Miss Hap my order for some brie, for when she visits a supermarket this afternoon! Now in order to facilitate this, she had to be slipped a couple of illicit euros on top of the 20 maximum that they were allowed to take!

Hopefully, I have not got her into trouble for the sake of buying me some cheese that I am only allowed a slither of per day. Well technically it’s my mum’s fault  anyway for giving her the extra money and asking her to bring home some croissants (poor girl, there’s nothing like exploiting an opportunity).

Seeing as we had to be at the school so early this morning, we all got up at 5.15 to give us plenty of time. My daughter as expected, took ages deciding which outfit would be suitable for impressing the French folk, not to mention be ‘cool’ enough for her friends’ approval. That sorted, she emptied the backpack she takes for school, save for the French book, and filled it up with ‘lunch!’ (Well it is going to be a long day for them)!

Just as we were pulling into the school car park, she told me to turn the radio down as someone might hear it (as far as I am concerned, there is nothing wrong with a bit of Erasure, and she was brought up on it)! I obliged not wanted to show her up, and we swung into the school in my lovely bright car, which was rather out-of-place with the Jeeps, 4x4s and other cars in muted colours.

I got out of the car to let Miss Hap out gave her a kiss and hug then went to sign her in with her teacher. I could see a few girls there already, but my daughter told me to go and strutted off to join her friends before they noticed her embarrassing mum and step-dad, in their embarrassing car, with the embarrassing music.

As we left, she didn’t turn and wave, as they were all engrossed in deep and excited conversation. Fair enough, but I really wished I had one of those really loud air horns that make that DA NA NA NA NA NANA NA NA NA NA NA noise!

Episode 249: Five Photos, Five Stories – Day 2: One For All….. —

Episode 249: Five Photos, Five Stories – Day 2: One For All…..

I recently received the following invitation from Author SB Mazing

I’m about to invite you to join in a challenge I recently accepted. Five Photos, Five Stories. I thought this challenge could present you with the opportunity of viewing blogging from a different angle, to do something different, anything that suits you for that matter. It’s entirely up to you. …

The Five Photos, Five Stories Challenge rules require you to post a photo each day for five consecutive days and attach a story to the photo.  It can be fiction or non-fiction, a poem or simply a short paragraph – it’s entirely up to you.

The photo I have chosen today is one taken last summer. It was a beautiful, hot day, so Mr Grump decided we would do a BBQ and invite some of the family and a couple of friends over.

It was a great evening, excellent food (Mr Grump is the best), lovely company and some decent music (in my opinion, but everyone seemed to enjoy it). Miss Hap had joined the loom band craze and had decided to make one for everyone, She was churning them out at an amazing speed, and the photo is some of us showing off her creations.

Just after we finished eating, the wind kicked up, and before we knew it the sky went black and the heavens opened, along with a spectacular thunder storm. Being the stalwart Brits we are, and used to such summer weather, getting everything taken indoors was a smooth operation, and the evening continued long into the early hours.

I would like to invite Ritu to join in.

Then each day, nominate another blogger to carry on this challenge.

Accepting the challenge is entirely up to the person nominated, it is not a command. And actually everyone can join in. So feel free to if you like the idea.

Episode 152: Disco Boy Dance Off. — February 8, 2015

Episode 152: Disco Boy Dance Off.

Oh I am so disappointed! I missed out an a prank carried out not too far away from where I live,  which is right up my street!

A local man decided to liven up a cold and dreary Saturday by turning up at his local Supermarket wearing nothing but a pair of rather unflattering purple shorts and one of those fleecy hats with the ear flaps.

The reason for his visit? He wanted to get the shoppers dancing, He had  trundled in a large sound system with a miniature disco ball which projected coloured lights, and set himself up in one of the aisles.

He was just drawing a bit of a crowd with UB40 and Paco Banton blaring out ‘Baby Come Back’ to get them warmed up when a grumpy looking Security Guard approached him.

Undeterred, he whipped out his microphone and asked to be left alone to get on with the show. This was not going to happen, he was asked to leave the store. Despite his protestations, to leave his stuff alone, the Security Guard was getting ready to manhandle ‘DiscoBoy (as he likes to be known) and his gear out.

Defeated, DiscoBoy left the building, and it was back to business as usual. What a shame. He didn’t even get to show off his dance moves!

I think they should have left him alone for a while to cheer people up…what about you?

Episode 149: Love On The Dancefloor….. — February 7, 2015

Episode 149: Love On The Dancefloor…..

Ahhh young love; most of us can remember our first crush, the butterflies when seeing them, the giggling with our friends  and the scraps of paper passed back and forth with little love messages on them…..and then the first kiss.

When I was about a young teen, I remember going to the local youth club with my older brother and younger sister. There used to be a disco with a DJ (who became a bit of a celebrity in the county before later before falling from grace) once a week which we used to love.

I remember on one occasion, some of my brothers’ friends using their catapults with creme eggs as missiles to shoot out the lights in the ceiling (God knows why, but you don’t question this kind of behaviour as a kid as you think it is funny)! Once the lights were down (literally) the dancing could begin!

The era was the late 1970s. The music was extremely varied and many of the sings had their own dances associated with them. Now I have always had 2 left feet, but everyone used to get up on the dance floor so of course I joined in….

Who could resist the clomping about to Status Quo? There were two rows of people on opposite sides facing each other, and as far as I can remember, you would lean forward lifting the back leg then lean back lifting the front leg then somehow, with a clomp and a twirl, you had swapped places with the person opposite you (assuming you had got the moves right and had not bashed into each other)!

Does anyone remember the dance that was done to Mud’s Tiger feet, and a few other songs as well? You know the one, hands on hips elbows out, then lean in twice with the left elbow, lean back twice, then forward with the right elbow, and so on. This was taken so seriously. My God, if you dared walk past someone at the wrong moment you were in danger of getting your eye blacked with a bony elbow!

My favourite was Boney M’s  ‘Brown Girl In The Ring’. This involved a bit of fancy footwork, a twirl and a clap! Now my coordination is pretty rubbish but I loved having a go at this one, especially if I managed to get through the record without messing up my moves!

Anyway,  back to the first crush. At the end of the evening the lights the DJ would always put a couple of slow numbers on so that gave boys the opportunity to ask a girl to dance with them (NEVER the other way around, we were ladies after all)! The girls would all be standing about nonchalantly chatting whilst desperately hoping they would get approached. I had my eye on a boy with the nickname of ‘ Bruiser’! (God knows why, he was pretty short and skinny, maybe he was the one that bruised easily rather than bruised others)!

Well one night, my luck was finally in and I got asked to dance by the boy of my dreams, I was so thrilled as we clumsily shuffled about to ‘Emotion’ by Samantha Sang. it was the best disco ever!

Just before the slow dances finished he asked me if I would like to go outside as there was a park right next to the hall. I grabbed his hand and off we went, Off course it was pretty dark by now. and I had not seen a piece of black fencing on the ground, you guessed it, I went flat on my face (well knee actually)! He helped me up, and I ignored the pain as I hobbled over to the swings with him, blood trickling down my leg.

That was the night I had my first kiss…. my knee was throbbing, bloody and muddy, and the kiss was rather wet and slobbery!

I was in heaven!

Episode 100: What Music Defines Your Life? — January 13, 2015

Episode 100: What Music Defines Your Life?

Here we are at my 100th Episode! I have decided that this one is going to be an upbeat and positive one! No mention of anxiety or weight gain allowed! Focus on the happy, that’s the order of the day! As you may already know, music is something that makes me happy, and I have taken my inspiration for today’s episode from my local radio station! One of the presenters chats to a guest about music throughout their life, and I am going to write my take on it!

On the day that I was born, ‘These Boots Are Made For Walking’ by Nancy Sinatra was number 1 in the UK charts. A good strong song, by a feisty woman,  with a  no-nonsense message! That’ll do for me; even if I still quite haven’t got the degree of feistiness that she has yet! I am getting there though. I am not as shy, by any means, as I was, and have become much more assertive.

One of the first records that I bought with my pocket-money was ‘Morning side of The Mountain’ By Donny and Marie Osmond. That was probably influenced by my older sister who worshipped the Osmonds,  Donny in particular. I did however, love them as well, and luckily, as she was older than me and could afford to buy their albums, I spent many a happy time with her listening to them.

As a little footnote to that story, about 10 years ago, Donny was performing at Leeds Castle, which was not too far away from where we live, My sister and her friend had got tickets, and invited me to go with them. It was wonderful. Beautiful surroundings on a balmy summer evening (no, it didn’t rain). He had a few large screens up which showed pictures of his family as they were then (which made me cry when I saw how old they all looked). The mostly middle-aged female crowd of around 6500, still swooned, and crooned along with him, singing his most popular numbers.

As a teenager, I was into all sorts of music, but I particularly remember ‘Since You’ve Been Gone’ by Rainbow, as well as Meatloaf’s ‘ Bat out Of Hell’ album. My Mum and step-dad used to go away at weekends sometimes in their caravan by themselves. My older sister and brother would look after us, which was great as we would inevitably have a house party! I remember extremely loud music, loads of teenagers, and a lot of smoking and drinking going on! However, it was pretty innocent really, as we never got busted.

I left home at 18 to join the army, which is where I originally met Mr Grump. For me ‘Love Is A Battlefield’ and ‘We Belong’ by Pat Benetar pretty much summed up our relationship back then! I also used to listen to a lot of Bruce Springsteen with my best mate Karen as well. She was responsible for Mr Grump and I getting back together 25 years later!

The song at my wedding to Miss Hap’s father was ‘Eternal Flame’ by the Bangles. a beautiful song, and it was a good day; unfortunately  though, the flame went out!

When I was in labour with Miss Hap, my two sisters were with me in the delivery room. It was a boiling hot evening around 11pm and I knew my daughter was about to be born. We had brought some CDs in with us to while away the hours, and for a bit of distraction. Anyway, as Miss Hap came into this world Tom Jones was belting out ‘It’s Not Unusual’. Probably not the first choice for many, but I love that number!

My step-dad was very good with Miss Hap when she was a baby, I had moved back home with him and Mum just before she was born, and they both doted on her. He would proudly push her pram around the town when we went out, and was very good at soothing her when she cried (or bellowed, as she was VERY loud)! Sadly, he became ill with lung cancer and died when my daughter was only 4 years old . My Mum chose ‘ The Power of Love’ by Jennifer Rush for the funeral. A very emotional song that is still quite hard to listen to.

Mr Grump and I decided that we would have a small, family wedding, and luckily for us, my brother-in-law is a very good musician and singer. We chose ‘Chasing Cars’ by Snow Patrol as one of the songs we would like him to sing for us, which was wonderful. He also sang ‘Hotel California’ by the Eagles which we all love, and everyone sang along. A very touching moment. He and my sister recorded it for our 1st anniversary which was brilliant.

My Dad always loved the musical ‘The Phantom of the Opera’. I think he and my step-mum had been to see it several times. When he sadly died a couple of years ago, she chose a couple of the songs from it for his funeral. However, for me, it was the hymn ‘Going Home’ that was more poignant, as well as very apt.

I know I said I was going to be upbeat, and yet  I have included some songs that have been at terribly sad occasions. However, they still evoke happy memories of  two men that were very influential and positive figures in my life. It’s funny how we associate songs with people as well as events in our lives.

I hope you have enjoyed my little musical trip down memory lane.

Episode 94: An Ode To Music. — January 9, 2015

Episode 94: An Ode To Music.

I do love to listen to music

It really brightens my day

When I am feeling all down and depressive

I dig out some good records to play!

Although my taste is now dated

It doesn’t really matter to me

I can still strut my stuff in my front room

To Spandau Ballet or perhaps ABC!

What about good old Madonna?

She is still going strong

Or perhaps a tune by The Communards

Will have me singing along!

My husband likes to show me his ‘twerking’

To hits that are from yesteryear

It will always set me off laughing

As he is seriously lacking a rear!

Some songs can make me so happy

That I just want to get up and dance

Others will make me all weepy

Remembering a failed young romance!

I am very thankful for music

For lifting me when I am low

It is something that I can rely on

To persuade some of the sadness to go!

Episode 75: Hitting A Bum Note! — December 14, 2014

Episode 75: Hitting A Bum Note!

What was  it about your partner that attracted you to them in the first place?….I have known Mr Grump for 30 years now in total, but we have only been together this time for about 6 years. The story of how we met is here.  Anyway, back in the 80’s, I was attracted to his spiky hair (now he has none), his flirtatious manner (that ended up splitting us up), his dress sense (he used to resemble Midge Ure), and lastly his sexy bum! Now of course, I am not as shallow as to go by looks alone;  he has a great sense of humour (that is vital for me), and a very thoughtful nature.

Last night Mr Grump had a couple of drinks, and as is normally the case on these occasions, he put some music on. Another thing that we both have in common is our fondness for 80’s music (much to Miss Hap’s disgust)!  As we were on our own last night, Mr Grump decided to do some  dancing for me which included a bit of ‘twerking’! I don’t know if it was supposed to be sexy or something, but it had the opposite effect and I roared my head off, it was so funny. For a start he hasn’t quite grasped what ‘twerking’ is. As old and unfashionable as I am, I have Miss Hap to keep me up to speed on the latest dance moves of which she excels, (thank God she doesn’t have my two left feet) Mr Grump thought that wagging his bottom about in front of me, is what it’s all about. Such a shame, bless him. The once sexy bum that he had in his youth has kind of disappeared and is now completely flat!

I did tell him this last night, and he reminded me of a time when he and myself , sister and brother-in-law, and niece and her fiance were out for an evening together. For some reason the men went on ahead and the three of us were chatting as we walked behind them. I don’t know where it came from but a remark was made along the lines of,

“Look at that, three men and not an arse between them”! I think our penchant for a nice peachy rump must run in the family, but all we have got between us is one,as flat as a pancake. one whose trousers are halfway down a non-existent arse,as there is nothing there to hold them up, and one who is  very tall and skinny  with legs up to his armpits and no bum in the middle! (Luckily they do all have other qualities that outweigh their lack of pert derrieres).

Mr Grump treated me to a bit of ‘Dad dancing’ instead seeing as his ‘twerking’ wasn’t cutting it with me. Realising  I was still unimpressed, he gave up totally, got the ironing board out and started cracking on with a weeks worth of ironing, whilst listening to the music!  Now THAT is an attractive quality in a partner!
