I decided that it was about time my handbag got sorted out. I have loads of different coloured ones, but seem to stick with the same old black one that matches most of my clothes, plus I am too lazy to turn move stuff from one bag to another! The fact that my bag was getting heavier and heavier, made me think that perhaps I don’t need to carry around everything….
I was surprised at some of the stuff i find essential to cart around everywhere with me:
- Address book. note-book and blank diary (ahh, what a social butterfly I am – NOT)!
- Sunglasses. Well I know it is the middle of winter in England but you never know…
- Empty glasses case. I only ever wear my glasses to work. so no idea why this is in my handbag. (I have a separate bag for work which is even bigger)!
- Cheap reading glasses. Just in case I do have to admit defeat when squinting at something for ages doesn’t work!
- Purse and phone. These really are the essentials.
- Jotter, This was supposed to be to write things in to help with inspiration. It hasn’t worked.
- Programme for school Christmas concert that I wrote about and offended everybody. God knows why that is still in there.
- 4 and 1/2 pens. Yes, one is broken,(who knows when you will need 1/2 a pen)?!
- 3 lighters. I gave up smoking in October, but they may come in handy. If I am stuck outside freezing somewhere, I can always rip up my jotter and use it to start up a fire. Be prepared, is what I say (Well actually I think it was the Brownies or something)!
- A multi-tool consisting of what looks like a knife fork and spoon combination. Now you never know when you might need eating utensils, so this is a very handy piece of kit to have around. (Shame you can’t use both the knife and fork at the same time though).
- Two packets of tissues for snotty noses, messy eating, emotional moments, or even substitute loo roll (Public toilets are always running out of toilet paper and you don’t want to be caught short). Another essential.
- A ‘looking good’ compact mirror. Not that i ever want to look in it, but it is there to compliment me, as no bugger else will!
I have decided that actually I do need everything in that bag. I have covered myself for some of the little challenges that life likes to throw our way when least expected.
What essentials do you need to carry with you, just in case?

Hmmm, what’s in by backpack? Mini first-aid kit, lensatic compass, gas lighter, a Gerber knife, a Swiss Army knife, men’s travel kit (including shaving kit), my Acer notebook & its charger, an Under Armour t-shirt, 48-hour Army ration pack, a Motorola SMP 2-way HT radio with ots field headset, two glowsticks, 1 LED flashlight, my Hohner harrmonica, my passport, a hand smoke-grenade, my Coastguard cap. I think that’s all?
Do I use them in daily basis? Not really.
But I might. 😉

Ha Ha! You are ready for anything! I am impressed that you have got a harmonica as well. You never know when someone might need a jaunty tune to cheer them up.

Hah! I loved the bit about tearing up the jotter and setting it ablaze!
In the winter I carry a large handbag, whose name is actually “Weekender.” (Not my name for it, but the company’s. I just call it my big bag.) It holds mittens and caps and sunglasses, still much needed due to snow’s reflection of the sun. Wallet, cosmetic bag (also rarely open, mostly for floss), coin purse, at least five kinds of lip balm and gloss, a pen, around 100 receipts, a novel, hand cream, hand sanitizer, and tissues. Really not bad, apart from the receipts. And goodness, do they ever print long receipts these days!

Ah, now I chucked out the receipts that I have to admit were lurking about in the bottom of my bag. It sounds to me as if you are a very organised woman, who has VERY smooth lips! 🙂

Well if you do, you will be the only one! For some reason the school got wind of it (I think my daughter might have dobbed me in). They got annoyed and so did some of the kids. Best day for traffic though since I started blogging!

I’m just the opposite. I am one of those people who hate to carry stuff around, so I wind up asking to borrow a pen or whatever else from the people who carry everything with them!

Perhaps you are the sensible one! I can never find anything in my bag anyway. I have to dig about for ages to get what I need.

lol at the Christmas concert programme!
I actually am the opposite – I hate purses and try to fit everything into the tiniest one possible or just carry everything in my pockets.
You are prepared for everything and anything – I wouldn’t get rid of a thing (well, maybe the half pen!)

Yes, the bane of my life concert! I put that programme back in the bag, to remind me how hard those kids worked in the orchestra!
I relented in the end and chucked the half pen, It didn’t have the innard to it which is the most important part really. I don’t like lumpy pockets, and I can’t be trusted anyway, knowing me, everything will fall out.

I carry most of the same things you listed, plus a couple more. I also have a mini lint brush as I’m usually covered with dog and cat hair, and a breakfast bar if I get hungry. 🙂
