I am not one for analysing my stats (mainly because I don’t really know how to). However, I understand the basics like number of views and what my top posts are.
Today for Writing 101, we are to study our stats, and write a post based on a choice of expanding on a popular post, or trying to write specifically for people from the country that brings in the most views. We can, if we choose, write one about the search terms used that bring traffic to the blog, referrers or clicks. The latter sounds a bit too complicated for me, so I am going to keep it simple and write about my best viewed post instead.
I have noticed that one post in particular, that was my most popular, was also the one where I caused the most controversy. It was my own opinion based on the Christmas Concert that I attended at my daughter’s school which you can read here.
I have mentioned that I am prone to inappropriate laughter, and can be set off by the slightest thing. Well the drum did it during this concert, and despite trying to rein myself in, I just found it hilarious, as did my younger sister sat next to me.
I don’t know how many times I mentioned that I was actually impressed by all the work and effort that the staff and the pupils put into this concert, especially as some of the children had only just started in September and had never picked up a musical instrument. The problem was, that I had made a bit of fun on my blog, and my daughter decided to tell a few friends at school, who told other friends….who told parents…..who told teachers!
Oh dear! I had a couple of comments reminding me how difficult it was to put on this type of show. I was reminded that it was CHILDREN I was being mean to (despite me saying that I loved it at the end), and I took the post down.
I felt pretty low, even though I had intended it as a tongue-in-cheek post, it had been completely misunderstood and they had missed the point entirely. I have since put it back up as (hopefully) the dust has now settled.
I actually nearly gave up blogging after that, even though at that time I was completely anonymous, and nobody knew which school concert I had attended (until my daughter proudly informed all of her friends). It taught me a lesson though.
I shall keep my gob firmly shut after this year’s concert (assuming I am not banned)!
Reblogged this on Barrow Blogs: and commented:
My sympathies, Judy. One thing to take away from it though your daughter is proud of you. And anyway, I think you have a great sense of humour (says one who also laughs at the wrong things, at the wrong time). jx

I read THAT post. Why oh why did they ever ban capital punishment!
You deserve to be flogged, hung drawn and quartered and then given a jolly good talking to. Yes. And fined a great big enormous amount of money. And made to go around with a sign round your neck saying that you are a bad person. I am quite surprised that the school in question hasn’t applied for an ASBO to keep you well clear. I think you should turn up at the next sports day and shout BOO and CHEAT every time someone wins a race. If you ARE lucky enough to attend the next concert then stand at the back armed with a good supply of eggs and rotten fruit. Go disguised as a nun so that you can escape the lynch mob and speed away on a motorbike. It is ironic that your most popular post has achieved such notoriety. I enjoyed reading it. I laughed. So well done.

I’m very prone to saying the wrong thing too – always in jest. In fact, I made a very tasteless joke the other day, luckily it was in real life and only Himself and the Kid heard me – and both admonished me for my utter insensitivity. I am reminded why I must never be tempted to tell friends that I blog, never mind family!!

A tricky one… Honesty vs protecting the guilty… Nah… It’s just more proof that too many people have had their sense of humour removed …

I also have a problem with inappropriate laughter.. At my mother’s funeral whilst the vicar was giving my mother a glowing reference (at least he knew her for a long time) two ladies behind me who I think were regular funeral attendees decided to voice their opinions. ‘I heard that she was buried in her favourite pink jacket and pearls, I wonder which one it was?’ I began snorting just as the vicar intoned how sorely my mother would be missed. If we took young children’s concerts seriously we would combust.. glad you are still here with us Judy.. and I am sure your daughter is very proud and that is why she told all her friends. XX

HA. I would have been the same as you in church as well! You’ve got to love nosy old ladies who like to gossip. I will probably combust at the concert this year trying to hold the laughter in! 😆

At my mother’s age 95.. most of her friends had passed away but there was always two or three behatted ladies at the service and the free tea afterwards. Nobody checks at the door and to be honest why not!! XX

Why not indeed, You can’t blame them really. It is probably a highlight for them. Free tea and a good funeral! Bless them 🙂

We should be allowed to find humor in most things but it seems too many people just don’t have a sense of humor. Kids concerts/shows are fun to watch but they can also be funny. Why can’t we laugh? It’s not mean spirited, it’s just funny.

Exactly George. In the end I got fed up with the sarcastic comments and took the post down for a bit.

I don’t know if we ever can predict what will catch on and what won’t. What is funny to one person offends another. What is meant as open-minded gets misinterpreted. What’s meant as light-hearted gets taken seriously because there wasn’t a smiley face attached or an LOL. We have to just do the best we can. 🙂 Anyone who knows you would have understood the fun.

You are so right. The slightest thing can be taken the wrong way, and could cause a furore over nothing!

I don’t like that!
If what you wrote was true, it’s your right to write it. People need to get over themselves.
It isn’t easy to put on a children’s program like that? Well guess what? We all know that! Writing a blog that entertains hundreds of people means finding humor in the strangest places.

Thanks for your support Joey. Yes it is true; I wrote it later in the evening after the concert. I probably would not be so touchy about it if it happened now, but back then I had only just started blogging and I really took the criticisms to heart. I was also mortified that I might have made things difficult for my daughter at school as well.

Drum beat (drum roll?). Laughter. Post. Controversy. Tongue in cheek! Hidden post. Post silently returned. Hmmm…Idea Bulb Lights Up! Plot. Story. – Without malice to none! (Is this correct English?) Keep writing. Does it matter what people think? Your “funny” bone was tickled and you burst out laughing. Is that wrong? Is it inappropriate? What is appropriate? Who set these rules? Never mind me.

Hello, and thanks for stopping by. I am Judy, in my (very) early fifties and decided that life definitely gets more interesting as it goes on! I am a wife and a mum and have just finished University as a Registered Nurse, after having worked as an Associate Practitioner in the NHS. I am also a poet and the author of my debut book, 'Rhymes of the Times.' I love to laugh, and I love rhyming words too, so I joined the two together, and my book was born. I am currently working on another book in the series also. I am a prolific blogger and enjoy writing funny stories, anecdotes, and anything really that takes my fancy.
