The Moth and the Fly — May 29, 2016

The Moth and the Fly

The grass needed mowing again

It was starting to look a mess

In, fact it was the perfect place

For the moth to have a rest

It looked so regal standing there

In its cape of black and red

Ruffling gently in the breeze

On its grassy, makeshift bed

A tired fly stopped a while

On top of a blade of grass

Perched precariously clinging on

Waiting for the aches to pass

After a while, it looked around

And much to its delight

A beautiful moth was having a nap

It was such a glorious sight.

some time later, the moth woke up

And spotted the little fly

Then they both fluttered off

Without as much as a good-bye!

The EU Referendum – In or Out? — May 27, 2016

The EU Referendum – In or Out?

My head is all in a muddle

I really don’t know what to do

I have to make a huge decision

Whether or not to leave the EU

The has been such a lot of scaremongering

From parties on both sides of the fence

If we leave, we’ll be destitute

Other countries will probably take offence

We’ve been told it will cause a recession

And Britain will go into the red

There will be thousands of job losses

Oh, this stuff is hurting my head!

What happens if we stay in then?

Will Britain still be as strong?

What about health and immigration?

What happens it all goes so wrong?

This is a momentous occasion

That I have thought very seriously about

The European Union Referendum

Should we stay in or should we get out?!

Writer’s Quote Wednesday Writing Challenge – Freedom — May 25, 2016

Writer’s Quote Wednesday Writing Challenge – Freedom

Ronovan and Colleen have given us ‘freedom’ for our prompt this week in the Writer’s Quote Writing Challenge.  I have found a wonderful quote below that certainly sums up my thoughts on ‘freedom.’

Freedom is not worth having if it does not include the freedom to make mistakes.

–  Mahatma Gandhi

Freedom to choose what colour

I want my hair to be

Freedom to wear what clothes I like

For my personality!

Freedom to drive my car around

Wherever I want to go

Freedom to ring my friends up

When I’m feeling low

Freedom to go out to work

And earn my own money

Freedom to laugh freely

If I find something funny!

Freedom to go swimming

On a hot and sunny day

Freedom with the words I use

In what I write or say.

Freedom with the food I eat

Or if I choose to drink

Freedom to marry whom I want

Who cares what others think?

Freedom with sexuality

Whether straight or gay

Girl, boy, or transgender

I can choose to live my way!

Freedom to make mistakes

To learn and then move on

Freedom to teach others

On where we got it wrong!

No Sense of Direction — May 22, 2016

No Sense of Direction

I’ve got no sense of direction

When driving, I haven’t a clue

If it wasn’t for good old Sat Nav

I really don’t know what I’d do!

If I go out of a building

From a different door, I went in

I totally lose all my bearings

And my poor old head starts to spin

It’s the same when I try giving directions

Even though I know where to go

Trying to explain it to others

Really is a no-go!

But somehow, I manage to wing it

And end up where I have to be

Even if I go round in circles

I get there eventually!

Oh How I Hate Dieting! — May 21, 2016

Oh How I Hate Dieting!

Oh, I’m sick of this dieting

In my quest to be all lithe and slim

Some food is so difficult to give up on

And, I am not really keen on the gym!

This spare tyre that I carry round my middle

Spills over the top of my jeans

I need to ditch the roasts and the curries

And eat more salads and greens!

I’m fed up with looking so chunky

And hate to see myself in the nude

I really must get some willpower

And take control of my food!

I know my lifestyle is unhealthy

That’s why I have diabetes type 2

I have given up smoking and drinking

And there is just this one thing to do

I have to become more assertive

If I am going to succeed

And stick to what’s healthy and nutritious

Instead of giving in to my greed!

Beautiful Bluebells — May 20, 2016

Beautiful Bluebells

Along a busy main roadbluebells

Traffic whizzes by

People rushing about their business

Their minds so occupied.

If they were to look closely

To either the left or right

They would see a bright blue carpet

Hidden there in plain sight!

A dazzling show of beauty

In a vibrant, violet hue

Bringing a splash of springtime

That would chase away their blues!

But, they drive on regardless

As though they are in a trance

Whilst the bluebells wave and nod

and enjoy their carefree dance!

Roxy’s Quest for Love —

Roxy’s Quest for Love

A Cavalier King Charles spaniel named Roxy

Thought she looked rather foxy

With her liquid brown eyes

That she flashed at the guys

She got known as a bit of a doxy!

We decided she needed to be mated

A quick romp, so no longer frustrated

No boxes were ticked

With the dogs that we picked

As most of them were sadly  castrated!

There’s Nowhere Quite Like England —

There’s Nowhere Quite Like England

This is a poem that I wrote many years ago but I have since updated by added another verse. For my 50th birthday, my sister and brother-in-law recorded my mum reading it for me and provided some background music too. I have put it at the end of the poem for you to enjoy.

There’s Nowhere quite like England

There’s Nowhere quite like England

with its counties and its shires

The ancient, rolling countryside

The marshes and the mires

?

There’s nowhere quite like England

The coastline and the sea

The churches and cathedrals

All steeped in history

?

There’s nowhere quite like England

The people are unique

We have our ‘quaint’ traditions

And like the Queen we speak!!

?

There’s nowhere quite like England

The climate so insane

One minute, brilliant sunshine

The next it’s lashing rain!

?

There’s nowhere quite like England

We love a cup of tea

Fish and chips and clotted cream

And juicy strawberries!

?

There’s nowhere quite like England

And, although it’s very small

To me, it is quite frankly

The most wonderful place of all
