Just Jot it January 22nd – Felicity

jjj-2016

I had to confess to having to look up the meaning of today’s word for Linda’s Just Jot it January. I had, of course, heard of it as a name but had no clue of its meaning. I am surprised to learn that it means a high degree of happiness or bliss according to dictionary.com

I was thinking about the last time I was in a state of such happiness, and you know, I can’t really remember. Now, don’t get me wrong, I don’t go around with a face like a smacked arse all of the time (although I have got one of those faces workmen love to address with “cheer up love, it may never happen,” which of course annoys me into looking even more miserable)!

On the whole, I am quite a cheerful person, I like to laugh and joke and try to make others smile too. However, being in a state of complete bliss or euphoria is for me, I think, reserved for those one-off moments. I remember the euphoria I felt when I found out I was pregnant at 37 years old, after thinking I would never have children. This was matched only by the absolute joy and delight when I actually met my daughter for the first time  and held her close.

I was ecstatic when I finally passed my driving test after many attempts and many years. something I had almost given up hope of achieving.  Similarly, when I graduated from university only four years ago, after going back to studies after many years.

Looking at those examples, it seems to me that to be in a state of felicity (I am not even sure how to use this word), at least in my case, it does not come easily, waiting, or working hard for the right moment to achieve it. I suppose this makes it all the more worthwhile, though.

Free- For- All Friday! —

Free- For- All Friday!

Welcome to another Free for All. I have got some great posts to share with you again this week. I know many of you already follow the same blogs as I do, but I do try and vary the posts that I share. There are so many wonderful bloggers out there that always post brilliant posts, so it is can be tricky choosing one in particular. That is why I always recommend that you visit the blogs to discover all the other little treats that await you.

Days of Stone I loved this haiku. Ryan has such a talent for writing them, that I had chosen another one of his to feature this week, forgetting I already had this one! That is why it is worth going to pay him a visit as he has so much to offer.

Willowdot21 This was a great poem that really appealed to me, great fun!

Nutsrok I am sure many of you are familiar with the lovely and extremely funny Linda. If not you soon will want to be finding out more about her after reading this!

So there you have a few tasty morsels to nibble on this week. Enjoy!

Happy Friday!

Episode 32: Middle-Aged Madness — January 21, 2016

Episode 32: Middle-Aged Madness

I wrote this year ago but it still applies! Even more so.

Today I am feeling decidedly middle-aged! It is not something that I really want to admit (especially to myself), but I am a whisker away from the half-century milestone. I can feel it’s malevolence reaching out to me, trying to drag me over to the ‘other side’ where youth is  a forgotten memory, and old age starts to creep into every pore, ready to assert its authority over my still-protesting mind and body…..

My husband, Mr Grump, has already metamorphosed into the moany, moody old git that comes with age (if you let it, and Mr Grump embraced it wholeheartedly). Oh, how he loves to complain! Mind you,  there is something to be said for it at times,(see, I knew I was getting old)!   We once had vouchers for a free meal as he had complained bitterly about the appalling service we had received, which…

Just Jot it January 21st – Mittens

Well, today’s Just Jot it January prompt word brought to us by lovely Linda is a bit of a fun one, ‘mittens.’

The first thing that springs to mind with this is those little rounded  gloves that encompass all of the fingers together and keeps the thumb separate. Great for keeping the hands warm, but hopeless if you try to do anything with them on. Getting money out of a purse being particularly tricky. This means that they have to be taken off quite a bit, thereby defeating the object of keeping your hands warm!

I remember when my daughter was young, she had a pair of mittens tied together with a long, skinny length of matching fabric that would be threaded through the sleeves of her coat. This was supposed to keep them from getting lost as they would dangle just below her hands if taken off. I think these turned about to be more hassle than they were worth, though.

Trying to get a squirming, wriggling toddler into her coat whilst avoiding tangling her up with the bloody  stringed mittens was no mean feat! Not to mention we were both hot and sweaty after the struggle and she didn’t want the damned thing on anyway!

Hugh’s Weekly Photo Challenge – Week 9: Stripes

I am so glad that Hugh’s photo challenge is back! I am still working on my photography skills so it the perfect challenge for me to have a go at!

Today we have the theme of ‘stripes.’ I could not think of anything obvious, and was not impressed by Mr Grump’s ‘helpful’ suggestion of taking a photo of him in his stripey jumper which makes him look like a rather elderly,  follically challenged ‘Dennis the Menace!’

However, whilst out walking with Roxy this morning I thought the clouds looked rather stripey.

What do you think?

I loved Sacha’s post today combining her 1000 speak and Writespiration prompts. Her mini rant on the expression ‘grow some balls’ set me off as well, and I decided that my contribution would be a poem on this subject. I then realised that actually, the prompt was to write about a struggle, but never mind, I think it still fits!

A quick word of warning. If you are offended by references to genitalia then this might not be for you!

When it’s time to’ man up’

We are told to ‘grow to a pair’

Balls will make us stronger

But that’s not very fair!

Why are they so special?

To make us act so tough

In those awful moments

When life gets really rough.

Gonads are quite tender

And one kick in the jewels

Can render someone helpless

Plus make them look such fools!

 Women are much stronger

There are no ifs and buts.

We have to push a child out

Despite the rips and cuts

You don’t find women fretting

On having to wear a box

Scared that being sporty

Will break their precious cocks!

If you want to show some strength

Balls are pretty minor

I suggest you ‘woman up’

Grow yourself a  vagina!

Just Jot It January 20th – Surreptitiously —

Just Jot It January 20th – Surreptitiously

jjj-2016

I do love the sound of today’s prompt word for Linda’s Just Jot it January, ‘surreptitiously’. The fact that it is rather sly and sneaky, stealthy and secret (sorry, I am getting into Wacky Word Wednesday mode), appeals to me.

I am pretty rubbish at trying to do things on the quiet, as my ham-fisted attempts at being unobtrusive very often fail miserably. I remember years ago when I was staying at a friend’s house, trying to creep in unnoticed from a night out, so as not to wake everyone up. The combination of a few drinks, low lighting and my natural ability, had me banging into things, wincing as something clattered to the floor, then being unable to stop laughing at my friend’s cross expression, ensured that the entire household knew we had arrived.

When Miss Hap was little, she was a very fussy eater and hated vegetables. I worried about getting them into her so would mash them up, mix them with other foods she liked or try to make a picture on her plate, you know that using a tomato for a nose or broccoli for hair, stuff like that(I never said I had a good imagination, and my creativity only applies to words)!  It never really worked very well; she was far too smart for my amateurish attempts to trick her into eating her veg.

No, it seems that being surreptitious is not something that I am cut out for. Shame really, as I rather fancied myself as a Secret Agent!

Welcome to another Wacky Word Wednesday. I have a really great sounding word for you today, which is another one that always makes me smile when I hear it. I think it is a word that is still used quite a bit, I know I enjoy saying it when I get the chance!

Squabble. Now this is an argumentative type of word; a set-to or a scrap, perhaps a petty dispute or disagreement.  It makes me think of a couple of kids scrapping over  some sweets or rowing over the remote control.

It is a trivial tiff or a frivolous fuss about nothing. A storm in a teacup really, quibbling and quarrelling over minor matters!  Hmmm, a bit like me and Mr Grump when we bicker over whose turn it is to make the tea!

The Great Book of Lists Chapter 1.3: The List of Desires — January 19, 2016

The Great Book of Lists Chapter 1.3: The List of Desires

This week’s list for La Duchesse d’Etat’s Great Book off Lists  is all about our hopes and wishes for 2016. Not necessarily specific goals or resolutions, just things that we would like to accomplish. Here is mine:

  • Attend the Annual Blogger’s Bash  in June. I am hoping to be able to go this year. It will be so exciting meeting up with fellow bloggers who I have come to know over the past year and a half. Many of you already seem like friends that I just haven’t met yet and I am so looking forward to actually seeing you in the flesh!
  • I’d really like to get stuck into editing and re-writing the book that I did for NaNoWriMo. I have had some really helpful and constructive feedback to what I have done so far, and this has spurred me on to want to make something out of it.
  • Get a grip, and make some lifestyle changes. I know this sounds like a resolution and it is, kind of, but I actually need to do it for the sake of my health. Luckily, there are two blogs that I follow that are very helpful here. Sally gives loads of helpful information and tips about nutrition, and I know I can ask her anything aout diet, and she would be able to help, plus she has been on a huge weight loss journey herself so understands the problems that can arise, trying to lose weight. Likewise Colleen, with her ‘Mindful Mondays’ gives advice, encouragement and support to those of us that are trying to embark on a healthier lifetsyle.
  • Take a few more Future Learn courses. I do love these little mini courses, as they are so interesting. I know I have mentioned them before, but for someone like me, that likes to learn about all kinds of different things, these bite sized lessons can give me a little insight into all sorts of subjects, and feeds my brain the knowledge it craves!
  • Get down to the beaach more often! Despite only living about twenty minutes or so from the seaside, I hardly managed to get down there last year, for one reason or another. This year, I am going to make the most of it!
Just Jot it January 19th – Climate —

Just Jot it January 19th – Climate

jjj-2016A great prompt word today for Linda’s Just Jot it January challenge. Being British, I think it must be ingrained in me to be obsessed about the weather. We love to moan about it whether it is too hot, too cold, too wet, too…..well you get the idea!

Actually, on the whole, we are pretty fortunate with the weather over here. Now, I know that might sound a bit controversial to some, but we don’t tend to get the extremes of weather that other countries do.

Take for example Australia, I know from a few of our Aussie blogger friends that temperatures recently got as high as 42 degrees C which is about 107 F! I cannot even begin to imagine that kind of heat, and as much as I love the sun, the heat does not agree with me.

Yes, I know you have air-conditioning and are mostly prepared when temperatures soar, which is more than can be said for us. As soon as we get a heatwave (a couple of days on the trot of 30 degrees or more), the country gets hysterical. First off, we have a drought (we don’t always need a heatwave for this, but it helps), which leads to a hosepipe ban. It is not the green and pleasant land then, Oh no, brown, parched fields and drooping, wilting flowers are a sad sight to behold. Then we get the panic buying, The shops sell out of bottled water and you can’t buy a fan for love nor money!

Conversely, my Canadian friend talked of it getting as cold as -22 C which is -7 F. Again I can’t begin to think how I would cope in such freezing cold.  Our country goes into meltdown if we get a bit of snow for a couple of days. Cars abandoned on Motorways, the railways service grinding to a halt, as it is the ‘wrong kind of snow’ for them to deal with. Councils running out of grit for the roads as they were unprepared (despite weather warnings), and most of the schools closing down as staff can’t get in. Some areas get completely cut off as well, trapped in their homes.  Again panic buying sets in for those able to get out. People risking life and limb to go and get bread and milk  in case they get snowed in too!

I am quite grateful for the climate that I live in actually, although of course, it won’t stop me moaning about it!
