Episode 316: The Unity of Humanity – #BeWoW:Humour

For my ‘Be Wonderful on Wednesday’ post on The Unity of Humanity, I have chosen to focus on humour,

No matter what race. gender, colour, creed or sexual orientation we are, everyone likes to laugh, it is universal. You only have to look at young children playing together, from even the most disadvantaged backgrounds, to see that they still manage to find something to laugh about.

Most of us have a sense of humour; even the most dour amongst us will find something that makes them laugh (particularly if it is at someone else’s expense)! I know I am pretty bad at laughing at the wrong times as well. Mr Grump once hit his head on the shelf above the radiator when he was taking some dry washing off of it. He clutched his head and went to the floor in a dramatic movement, making a hell of a fuss, Meanwhile I was helpless with laughter, doubled over. It was my mum also clucking round him that made me worse! (He was ok, by the way, a little scratch and a bit of a bump, but ok).

I feel that humour has a way of uniting people. If we look at some of the comedians like Eddie Murphy for example. He has been in many funny films that people have enjoyed and even his voice as ‘Donkey’ in Shrek, makes me laugh. I roared my head off at the movie ‘East is East’ which was mainly about the trials of an Indian family growing up in England in the 1970s.

I absolutely love Stephen Fry; I think he is one of the most intelligent and witty people alive, he also happens to be gay, as does Graham Norton, Ellen de Generes and a host of other comedians. No-one has the monopoly on being funny and being able to make others laugh, just the same as you don’t have to belong to a particular group to be able to laugh.

Another one of my favourite comedians is Omid Djalili, although born in England, his parents are Iranian, I love his humour as he takes the mickey out of himself, and everyone else as well, he just doesn’t care. An interesting fact that I discovered whilst researching his origins, is that he belongs to a faith  called Baha’i. which is a religion which endorses the unity of humankind, to me, that says it all.

Unity in love, respect, tolerance, and of course humour  would make the world such a better place.

Free-For-All Friday #6

Welcome to week 6 of my Free-For-All Friday where I choose some of my favourite posts of the last week. As usual, there is a pretty mixed bag of all kinds of things, from the funny to the serious, and thought-provoking. I am sure that you will find something amongst these that will tickle your fancy!  All of the blogs of course, are well worth a visit.

Fill Your Own Glass. This post was a very heartfelt one written by the lovely Karen. I have followed her blog for a while now, and I can always count on her for her well-written and well-thought out posts. They often make me take a step back and look at things from a different perspective.

A Opinionated Man Where do I start here! Jason has done loads to help new and established bloggers alike. He offers advice and help, as well as posts pretty regularly. He very often holds ‘meet and greets’ so even if this link is out of date by Friday, it won’t be too long before he holds another one. An invaluable opportunity to  promote your blog and find others!

Blogging Around With The Original Domestic God This post had me laughing my head off! The sheer silliness of it really appealed to me. He has a wonderful way with words and fantastic sense of humour.

Yadadarcyyada This post is a really great piece of advice. I really love the style of this blogger, who I fortunately came across this week. She is down to earth and funny, and gives out handy tips too!

Thebippityboppitybeautifulblog We all like to look at something pretty from time to time. I love bright colours especially yellow and I just loved these pictures. Go over and have a look, they are gorgeous.

The Screenplay Of Life Chronicles This post is just lovely The photograph is beautiful as is the message. Kevin is really talented, and has a wonderful blog.

Sophie Speaks Up This is a really funny tongue-in-cheek post that resonated with me. I laughed my head off, when i read it.

Episode 286: Multicoloured Madness! — April 14, 2015

Episode 286: Multicoloured Madness!

Over here in the UK we have got a bit of Election Fever going on.  In less than a month we will be casing our votes for the next Prime Minister and their government to take up residence, and all of the major parties are spouting off about the miraculous things they are going to change, or introduce.

One parliamentary candidate decided that it would be a great idea for people who  suffer from mental health problems, to wear some sort of coloured wristband according to their conditions. This was mentioned by her at a debate to keep the NHS public; she thought it might help professionals to identify conditions that mentally ill people might not be able to convey to them otherwise!

She has managed to offend quite a few people by this outrageous suggestion, not least because people with mental health conditions tend to already be stigmatised, or pre-judged in some way. There is still quite a lack of understanding and ignorance surrounding mental health, and decorating people with an array of different coloured wristbands is just like branding them as ‘unclean’ or something!

I suffer from depression myself (as it happens today is not a great day for me), and I don’t think I want to be walking about with an accessory that identifies me as having a mental illness. I am not ashamed of it, or anything, but there is far too much discrimination  as it is, due to ignorance. To broadcast to all and sundry that you have one or more of these conditions is setting yourself up for yet more problems!

Do you agree with the wearing of wristbands for mental health sufferers?

Episode 252: Five Photos, Five Stories – Day 3: Roses — March 26, 2015

Episode 252: Five Photos, Five Stories – Day 3: Roses

I recently received the following invitation from Author SB Mazing

I’m about to invite you to join in a challenge I recently accepted. Five Photos, Five Stories. I thought this challenge could present you with the opportunity of viewing blogging from a different angle, to do something different, anything that suits you for that matter. It’s entirely up to you. …

The Five Photos, Five Stories Challenge rules require you to post a photo each day for five consecutive days and attach a story to the photo.  It can be fiction or nonfiction, a poem or simply a short paragraph – it’s entirely up to you.

Today I am going to do another poem. My favourite flowers are roses (yellow ones especially). When I first moved in here, despite my lack of gardening skills I planted a few rose bushes. All of them were yellow and all scented. Over time I have lost some of them, but have planted others in different colours. The picture I’ve chosen was taken last summer, and is of some of my beautiful roses from the garden!

The rose’s delicate beauty

A wonder to behold

The petals, so exquisite

The  colours soft and bold

The scent is all-pervading

Its sweetness fills the air

The fragrance soft and subtle

Is truly beyond compare.

My roses are so special

They always make me smile

They brighten up my front room

If only for a while!

I would like to invite Caitlin from The Teen Daydreamer to join in.

Then each day, nominate another blogger to carry on this challenge.

Accepting the challenge is entirely up to the person nominated, it is not a command. And actually everyone can join in. So feel free to if you like the idea.

Episode 225: Off Colour! — March 16, 2015

Episode 225: Off Colour!

That’s it, it’s official, Mr Grump is banned from doing the washing! It appears that he is unable to distinguish ‘light’ from ‘dark’ colours, and my fancy underwear has suffered as a result!

Due to the fact that I come home from work with an assortment of ‘germs’, (we have only just cleared the Norovirus from the Ward), we usually put our washing on a reasonably hot wash, hopefully killing off any malingerers!

I usually try to put the loads on myself in order that they are properly sorted out thereby reducing the chances of  colours running into each other. However, this weekend being Mother’s Day, I took the day off from the mundane chores. Big mistake!

Mr Grump’s strategy us to just put the entire contents of the washing bin in the machine on a 60 degree wash and see what happens! He has a penchant for living dangerously as far as my clothes are concerned, as this has happened before (always to my stuff I notice)!

Anyway, I had a really busy day at work today and came home tired. I noticed he had done the ironing which I was pleased about as I needed another dress for work tomorrow. Then I noticed. My lovely new underwear. I have only worn it a couple of times. It was a lovely light blue colour. It is now a grotty grey colour. I am bloody cross!

Actually, he is dropping me off at work tomorrow. Good. As he has the car, he can go into town and buy me some more. Well. at least I will gain something from it!

Episode 109: Growing Old Disgracefully…… — January 17, 2015

Episode 109: Growing Old Disgracefully……

I have been pretty negative about the process of aging recently and how I am starting to feel (not to mention look) old. I have decided that there must be some positives to being older, and here are a few things that I have noticed….

You can say what you ‘bloody well like’, in the words of my 82-year-old mother! Yes, once you reach a ripe old age you have earned the right to say what you like about anything; regardless of whether or not it causes offence or hurts anyone’s feelings. I have been in the supermarket with Mum when she has told the assistant on the deli counter that she ‘doesn’t want that plastic ham’ or she’s ‘not paying that much for a bit of cheese’ etc. They can’t decide whether or not she is joking but soon get the message when she turns on her heel and just stomps (well hobbles nowadays unfortunately) off! I. or my sisters (whoever has the pleasure of being with her)  are left cringing in her wake, rolling our eyes at the bewildered assistant.

She likes to say what she thinks about members of the family too. Either directly, once she told me that a trouser suit I had bought would look better on my sister as ‘she has got the figure for it’. Very true, but I was gutted, and never wore it again! Or indirectly, as in when someone has left the room and before they are even out of earshot she will remark about how much weight they have ‘piled on’ or how awful their outfit is!

Another advantage is selective hearing. This can come in very handy when you don’t want to do something. For example, my Mum hates putting her heating on, and would rather sit there shivering under a blanket than be nice and cosy in a warm room. So when any of us walk in to her little icebox, the conversation goes something like this.

“Why haven’t you got your heating on?”

“What?”

” I SAID, WHY HAVEN’T YOU GOT YOUR HEATING ON?”

“I cant’ hear a bloody word you are saying!”

Leaning over and bellowing in her ear,

“WHY IS THE HEATING NOT ON?!”

” Can you put my hearing aid in, it’s over there?”

By now, I have lost the will to go on, but will dutifully get the hearing aid which is whistling and shrieking, and put it in for her, and then just go and turn the heating on myself. It’s easier.

However, if I had whispered to my sister a bit of gossip about someone, she would have heard that and put her two penneth in!

When you are older, and supposedly wiser, you are an asset to any quiz team! There are always questions about the old days. Games like Trivial Pursuit and other question based games normally require a good range of general knowledge, and of historical events. It stands to reason that n older person on the team is a bonus (providing they have their hearing aids in, of course)!

You can dress with abandon, wearing whatever you like in whatever colour combinations you choose when you are older. Who cares about being colour-co-ordinated any more. Many elderly people I have encountered (which amounts to quite a few), are very  uninhibited in their dress sense. Why shouldn’t you wear reds, green and blues ALL at the same time! Who gives a toss about what others think?!!

You can nod off at the drop of a hat. Think Grandpa Simpson here, and his amazing ability to fall asleep, even mid-sentence! Yes, when you are older, nobody thinks it odd if you fall asleep at inappropriate times. How great is that? If you have a social function that you are obligated to go to but are not keen, it doesn’t matter! You can just have a snooze whenever you want and no-one will think you are rude. Far from it, they will probably think you are very sweet and endearing!

Those are just a few of the benefits I have come up with to being older…. are there any I have missed?
