#Writespiration 52 Weeks in 52 Words Shoes — November 8, 2017

#Writespiration 52 Weeks in 52 Words Shoes

This week for Sacha’s #Writespiration challenge we are to write a day in the life of a pair of shoes. Not only that but we have to use only 52 words!

We may not be sexy and chic

Worn every day of the week

It’s comfort, not style

That makes us worthwhile

And the fact we don’t leak!

We never complain of our fate

Squashed beneath all her weight

Stomping all day long

Still going strong

Despite looking a bit of a state!

Photography 101: Home

As some of you may know, I enrolled myself on the Photography 101 course as my skills are seriously lacking! I do try and take some photos to accompany my posts but they are a bit hit and miss.

The very first thing we have been asked to do is to take a photo of ‘home’ and whatever that means to us. No fancy editing here, just a good old plain photo.

Home

Home to me is my front room. We have quite a small house so it really is the room where I spend most of my time. Home, of course, is also where my family are. Mr Grump and Roxy snuggled up together is a very common sight. Miss Hap is normally up in her room blasting out Justin Bieber songs or something, but I ‘encouraged’ (bribed)  her to be in the photo.

As you can see, she is lolling all over the settee with her phone clamped tightly in her sweaty little mitts! Oh, and the daffies you can see in the photo were an extra Mother’s day prezzie (I got a lovely teddy and also a cushion), she had picked for me  ‘from the roadside’ (I am hoping not to get a bang on the door from an irate neighbour whose garden has been pillaged!)!

Food, Glorious Food! #BeWoW Post. — October 7, 2015

Food, Glorious Food! #BeWoW Post.

I have always had rather a passionate love affair with food, It is, after all, vital for our very survival. For some, though it is just fuel in order to keep the body functioning properly, and not something they particularly think much about. They eat when they need to, and ensure that they consume the right balance of nutrients to keep them within a healthy weight range.

For me, though, food is so much more than that, it is an experience. I love to savour and enjoy; it is a pleasure to be shared with others, whether it be around a huge table, or sitting on a towel at the beach! Give me a buffet and I am in my element; Eying up the selection of foods laid out, enticing me with their irresistible looks, and inviting me to devour them.

Even more than this is my desire to attend a ‘Medieval Banquet.’ Get out of the way Henry, that ham is mine! Just the thought of the succulent meats, tender vegetables, and plump juicy fruits not to mention all of the other goodies that would be on offer, is enough to send me into frenzy!!

Food is also linked to events, dates or occasions. For me Bonfire Nights as a child were wrapping up warmly against the chilly November night, watching the fireworks, and then eating something warm and hearty, such as a stew and jacket potatoes with chunks of bread. Christmas dinners, of course, with the traditional roast turkey, stuffing, pigs in blankets, sprouts (the only time I eat them), roast potatoes, and all the other trimmings. Once that was eaten, it was either a brisk walk or a slump on the sofa for a nap!

One more food I have to give a mention to is bacon. Just the smell it cooking, can rouse the laziest teenager from their bed to breakfast in record time! For me, it is caravanning holidays with my family. We always had cooked breakfast when we were on holiday, and the ‘full English’ was the perfect start to set us up for the day.

But, my love of food has cost me dearly. Well, actually, truth be told, not my love of food, more so my greed with food. As I got older, and life became a little tougher, I sought out my loyal and faithful love. It was always there for me and made me feel better. It gave me comfort and, for a while, respite. Unfortunately, it also gave me Type 2 diabetes.

My over-indulgence was to blame, I did not heed the danger signs, the weight continued to pile on and I did nothing to counteract it. I used food too much for comfort, paying no heed to the negative effect it was having on me.

However, this is a positive post. I can still have a good relationship with food, but not so much of an obsessive one. I can still eat the foods I enjoy, just in smaller quantities and not as often! The best thing though is that food can still be a pleasurable experience to be shared with others, and as long as I rein in my urges to eat everything in sight, I might even get to that banquet!

Those people who I did not understand who ‘ate to live’ rather than my philosophy of ‘living to eat’ had got it mostly right. However, I do believe that there should be no shame in enjoying food; I can still feel the comfort and warmth that food gives me, but I can eat sensibly so that my body can feel the benefits of it too!

Episode 303: You Know You Are An Old Codger When……. — April 24, 2015

Episode 303: You Know You Are An Old Codger When…….

  • You bend down to pick something up, and not only do your knees creak more than a door that needs oiling, but you find it really difficult to get back up again!
  • You are too vain to wear your glasses outside of work, but can’t read something unless you hold it up, do the sliding back and forth manoeuvre in front of your face and add in a squint for good measure.
  • You still spend a lot of time in the bathroom, but it is normally because you have to get out so many times a night to go to the loo!
  • High heels are no more than an inch and a half; shoes are for comfort not style!
  • You snore louder than the dog, and have even woken yourself up!
  • You can no longer tolerate much alcohol. The three-day hangover you now get after a couple of glasses of wine is never worth it!
  • Whenever you go anywhere, you have to remember to take your medications with you!
  • Forget the sexy lingerie, it is practical garments that cover the essentials properly!
  • You become rather ‘set in your ways’ and get mad if someone buggers up your routine.
  • If someone rings after 9pm, you are outraged that they would be calling ‘at this time of night’!
  • You try to sing along to your favourite song, and realise (a) it has been remixed, mucked about with and re-released or (b) you have forgotten the words!
  • You are married to a Grumpy Old Git!
Episode 127: Breaking Out of The Comfort Zone — January 29, 2015

Episode 127: Breaking Out of The Comfort Zone

I have decided that now and again, it is good to shake things up a little and do things that are out of your comfort zone. It can be refreshing, as well as enlightening. Not that I originally had any choice in the matter when I had to do something totally out of my comfort zone today….

I always get to work half an hour early, and today when I walked in, I was told that my name was down to work on the ‘Winter Pressure Ward’. Oh, great, that’s going to be a treat. Off I trotted, only to walk in halfway through handover as they actually start at 7am and I got there at 7.10am. This put me on edge straight away I knew no-one else that was there, plus they were all looking at my sullen face as I dumped my coat and bag down and grabbed a handover sheet.

This ward is usually used for other things but due to the sheer numbers of patients coming into hospital during the winter, plus the pressure on hospitals to meet performance targets, for waiting times in Accident and Emergency, patients are sent here. There are 24 patients in total,  of all ages, and all sorts of ailments.

It was a bit of a shaky start due to the fact that I didn’t know where any of the equipment was that I needed. i had to go backwards and forward a few times until I had everything, but it didn’t take that long.

I lost the sullen face, as I was there to work and look after the patients, so that is what I did. Some of the patients might have given me a bit of an odd look, when I asked them if they needed help with washing or feeding (I am so used to my elderly patients who mostly need help with everything) but other than that, things went pretty well really.

Today was a good lesson for me; not to be scared of the unknown. Have more confidence in myself that I can adapt to a different way of doing things, and despite my shyness, work with different people. It was a great day.
