Well, here we are again for another Wacky Word Wednesday. This is where I rummage around for a weird, wonderful or wacky word that deserves to have another few minutes in the spotlight. The one that I have chosen today not only sounds great but also has an onomatopoeic quality to it, so you know exactly where you stand.
Gobsmacked. Oh, this is a shocked and surprised word, the kind of reaction to some scandalous shenanigans! Amazed, astounded and utterly astonished, maybe even being rendered speechless! As my nan would have said, “you could have knocked me down with a feather!”
It is being flabberghasted, and floored, dumbstruck and thunderstruck, bowled over and blown away. A bit like I feel when Miss Hap tidies her room without being asked!
I’ll have to use this tomorrow. Try it out in a sentence or two. 🙂

I LOVE THAT WORD SINCE THE FIRST TIME I HEARD IT. YEARS AGO A YOUNG LADY MOVED TO COLD NORTHERN ONTARIO FROM LONDON AND SHE USED IT A LOT. iT STARTED ME USING IT BECAUSE I JUST LIKED TO SAY IT! SHE SAID THE THING THAT AMAZED HER MOST WAS PEOPLE WALKING AROUND WITH THEIR PAPER CUPS OF TAKEOUT COFFEE. CANADIANS LOVE OUR “TIM HORTONS” COFFEE

It is one of the words from my childhood that we could use in front of adults rather than swear words! Thankfully it is also considered non-offensive and has avoided the Politically Correct brigade that have turned so many innocent expressions into naughty words.. thanks Judy.

My nana rarely said a cross word to either my brother or me but when one of us said gob she went potty. Too common. Thanks for the memory jogger. Quite discombobulated I was!

Exactly. I’d have loved to have tried ‘gobshite’ on her to see the expression.

I thought that would be a great name for a band, but found that there’s Godsmack already. Sigh.

I dislike it when some TV host acts gobsmacked. For instance when a big name walks on stage as if he/she were unexpected. A bit like the Publishing House winner being told she has won $5000 per week for twenty years.Gobsmacked, no way.

I know what you mean Oneta, it is very annoying when people feign it! Especially as everyone can see through it. 🙂

Haha! Gobsmacked is a great word Judy. I hadn’t heard it until I moved back to the UK in 2003 and I still love using it when I can! It’s just so…well…delicious, when the occasion fits, isn’t it? 😀

This is me!
Judy E Martin
Hello, and thanks for stopping by. I am Judy, in my (very) early fifties and decided that life definitely gets more interesting as it goes on! I am a wife and a mum and have just finished University as a Registered Nurse, after having worked as an Associate Practitioner in the NHS. I am also a poet and the author of my debut book, 'Rhymes of the Times.' I love to laugh, and I love rhyming words too, so I joined the two together, and my book was born. I am currently working on another book in the series also. I am a prolific blogger and enjoy writing funny stories, anecdotes, and anything really that takes my fancy.
