I have been away from blogging for a while and have missed taking part in Charli’s Flash Fiction Challenge, over at the Carrot Ranch. Go and check out her website as there are lots of challenges that you can take part in and also a whole load of badges to be won.
This is the image that we were given to use, and the topic is ‘follow your dreams. ‘ These are the rules: Oh, and I have used the ‘poet’ badge in my post.
March 22, 2018, prompt: In 99 words (no more, no less) write a story using the theme “follow your dreams.” Bonus points for throwing a badge into the tale. Go where the prompt leads.
- Respond by March 27, 2018, by leaving a link, pingback or story in the comments.
- If you want your story published in the weekly collection, also post it at Carrot Ranch on Facebook in the post newsfeed (this is the second posting of your story).
- Follow the style of the flash fiction that follows.
- Leave a short link on FB with your story if you want one included in the title.
- Rules are here.
The applause carried her right through the week. She recalled the cheeks flushed with pleasure, and eyes although bright with tears in some faces, shone with delight. Tears appeared in her own eyes now, bittersweet. She had followed her dreams and studied hard to become the dedicated nurse she aspired to be. Yet, she ached to fulfil another need. Playing with words had always been a favourite pastime, and the poem she had written to cheer up her cancer patients brought the house down. Laughter certainly is the best medicine!
Love this sis! I hope you do use your creative words to help your patients!
Thanks Sis. Before I went to Uni I gave one of my patients in a residential home a copy of my book as she great sense of humour and we had loads of laughs together. 🙂
That is awesome sis!
I miss some of my patients actually and often wonder how they are doing. x
Welcome back Judy — this is a great comeback. Laughter certainly is the best medicine. Hugs!
Thanks so much Teagan and I am glad you enjoyed the story 🙂
Well Judy this is lovely, very touching, I love how you have brought your hopes and dreams into the story . Great post Sis 💜💖🤗
Thanks so much, Sis. I am not great at FF so have to try and get inspiration from my own experiences. 🙂
How wonderful that you can offer both ways of medical service, sis!!
I certainly hope that I will be able to, Sis 🙂
You already do it…
Thanks, Sis 💖💖💖
Laughter is the best medicine…and because you know that, there will be a lot of lucky patients when you get your degree 🙂
Thanks Aimer, how lovely of you 🙂
Judy, your flash is a beautiful dream! Your character has discovered that when we can combine our gifts and focus on a purpose, our life takes on a deeper meaning. I had tears sting my eyes as I read!
I am so pleased that you enjoyed my post, Charli, and were moved by it. 🙂
Nothing better than ‘laughter’ to cheers up the surroundings, Judy. So good to see how you’ve followed your dreams. Keep on dreaming and keep on believing. They really do come true (as you have proved).
Thanks so much for your encouragement, Hugh. I am lucky to be in a position to at least try and follow my dreams. 🙂
Lovely, and so true! Not much to laugh about these days. Thanks, Judy and good luck!
Thanks Olga, sadly you are right, there isn’t much to laugh at nowadays.
Love it Judy, and this is definitely a BOTS! You are following your nursing dream, and how great to see you flashing at the Ranch again! xxx
It is really good to be back, Sherri. I will try and join in as and when I can because I want to practice my Flash and I enjoy it, too! 🙂
I took a long break from all blogging and flash last year, what with the house move and its aftermath, plus trying to find any time I could to press on with the memoir, and the great thing is that Charli always encourages us to take part when we can with absolutely no pressure when we just can’t do it. Getting back to flash was really great, so I know exactly how you feel Judy! It is such a joy and I enjoy your writing too Judy! 🙂 xxx
It is good to get back to blogging as well as writing Flash, although I am not back to as often as I used to be yet! It is lovely to interact with you all again, and also know that I am under no pressure (only from myself) to post every day! xxx
Lovely to see you again too Judy…and I know about that self-imposed pressure!!!! Hugs 🙂 xxx
It is always good to see you too, Sherri. Hugs back to you xxx 🙂
Thanks Judy! 🙂 xxx
I missed your piece until this compilation, and am glad to have come across it now. The most amazing thing about people is their ability to laugh. Some laugh when they have cancer, even laugh when the cancer is winning, laugh among friends
Yes, it warms my heart that people can still find things to smile or laugh about even though they may be in terrible situations. 🙂
This is me!

Hello, and thanks for stopping by. I am Judy, in my (very) early fifties and decided that life definitely gets more interesting as it goes on! I am a wife and a mum and have just finished University as a Registered Nurse, after having worked as an Associate Practitioner in the NHS. I am also a poet and the author of my debut book, 'Rhymes of the Times.' I love to laugh, and I love rhyming words too, so I joined the two together, and my book was born. I am currently working on another book in the series also. I am a prolific blogger and enjoy writing funny stories, anecdotes, and anything really that takes my fancy.
