Carrot Ranch Flash Fiction Challenge March 22nd. Follow Your Dreams

I have been away from blogging for a while and have missed taking part in Charli’s Flash Fiction Challenge, over at the Carrot Ranch. Go and check out her website as there are lots of challenges that you can take part in and also a whole load of badges to be won.

This is the image that we were given to use, and the topic is ‘follow your dreams. ‘ These are the rules: Oh, and I have used the ‘poet’ badge in my post.

March 22, 2018, prompt: In 99 words (no more, no less) write a story using the theme “follow your dreams.” Bonus points for throwing a badge into the tale. Go where the prompt leads.

  • Respond by March 27, 2018, by leaving a link, pingback or story in the comments.
  • If you want your story published in the weekly collection, also post it at Carrot Ranch on Facebook in the post newsfeed (this is the second posting of your story).
  • Follow the style of the flash fiction that follows.
  • Leave a short link on FB with your story if you want one included in the title.
  • Rules are here.

The applause carried her right through the week. She recalled the cheeks flushed with pleasure, and eyes although bright with tears in some faces, shone with delight. Tears appeared in her own eyes now, bittersweet. She had followed her dreams and studied hard to become the dedicated nurse she aspired to be. Yet, she ached to fulfil another need. Playing with words had always been a favourite pastime, and the poem she had written to cheer up her cancer patients brought the house down. Laughter certainly is the best medicine!

#JusJotJan 2018. January 2nd Boisterous

I love that Linda has the Just Jot it January Challenge to start off the year. This is the 3rd year that I have taken part, and it is one of those challenges that I actually look forward to. It is not only because it gives us all to kick-start our writing, but because it is something of a community effort, with regards to all of us being given the opportunity of suggesting the prompt words. Poor old Linda still does the hard work though of posting the prompts daily and keeping us in order!

Anyway without further ado, here is today’s prompt word.

Your prompt for January 2nd, 2018, brought to you by Dan Antion, is “Boisterous.” Use it any way you’d like in your post. And make sure you visit Dan at his blog, “No Facilities,” to read his post and say hi! He’s very friendly. ? Here’s his link:  https://nofacilities.com/

On Christmas Day afternoon Me, Miss Hap and Mr Grump went to my sister (Mrs Masterchef) and brother-in-law’s (Mr Musician). We were lucky in that they hadn’t dished out the silly ‘table presents’ that they like to wrap up. My brother (Mr Entrepreneur) and his girlfriend (Ms Glam) were there too, and we all chose a  random package to unwrap.

Things got pretty loud and boisterous as we tried on some of the wacky wigs and weird masks. The ‘fart extinguisher’ I unwrapped came in handy with the amount of wind produced by the Brussels sprouts and stuffing balls we had all consumed during our respective Christmas dinners!

Mr Grump looked rather fetching in his ‘pearl necklace’, but Miss Hap seemed unimpressed with her nasal hair trimmer for some reason. Mr Musician’s ‘beer goggles’ went well with the George cross wig.

Then it was time to play the ‘Beat The Into’ quiz. We played in our respective couples with Miss Hap supposedly helping Mr Grump and me out.  This was great fun despite the inevitable arguments about rules, counters getting ‘accidentally’ knocked off the board and partners falling out over a difference of opinion on answers. Not that any of us are competitive about our musical knowledge of course. As it happens, I won, (Sorry, my team won), as the quiz was mostly around 90s music and earlier which is right up my street!

Round 2 of the game was even more boisterous due to everyone trying to beat us, and Mr Musician and Mrs Masterchef (cheated) won the 2nd game!

Miss Hap was probably the best behaved – and that is saying something!

Thoughts and Entanglements This is lovely, I could almost feel the slight breeze in my hair!

Deb Was Here Deb pays tribute to a very special person, which brought a lump  to my throat.

Episode 354: Love-Hate Challenge

Rob over at the V-Pub has nominated me to take part in this challenge. Please go and check out his blog if you haven’t already; he has lots of things to tickle your fancy, both naughty and nice!

In this challenge, I have to list ten things that I love and then ten things that I hate.   Then, I’ll nominate 10 bloggers to do the same.  Here goes:

Things I love:

  1. I love to laugh.
  2. Seeing the sunshine, that always makes me feel happy.
  3. Hearing my daughter’s laugh (she has a cute little screechy giggle)
  4. Enjoying a BBQ with friends and family
  5. Blogging of course 🙂
  6. Learning new things. Knowledge is a wonderful thing that I can’t get enough of!
  7. Flowers, especially scented roses and sweet peas…..beautiful.
  8. Swimming, especially in the sea
  9. Getting lost in a really good book
  10. Music especially from 60s, 70s and my favourite the 80s!

Things I hate:

  1. Bad manners. There really is no excuse for this.
  2. Trying to lose weight…where on earth is my willpower?
  3. Heights, I really am hopeless with heights and can’t even look at things on tv if it shows a view from on top of a high building or something
  4. Cruelty of any kind whether to animals or humans!
  5. Scammers. Those that prey on the elderly and the vulnerable.
  6. Brussel sprouts and broad beans….YUCK!
  7. Daddy-long-legs, wasps and other creatures!
  8. Scraping ice off the car in the winter!
  9. Being woken up when I have fallen asleep on the settee!
  10. Shouty people.

Here are my 10 nominees for the Challenge should they wish to join in (there is of course, no obligation)

Episode 346: #BeWoW – How I Keep Positive. — May 26, 2015

Episode 346: #BeWoW – How I Keep Positive.

This is  my BeWoW post  as inspired  by Ronovan

Keeping positive is something that I am constantly striving to achieve, seeing as I have always tended to look on the negative side of things!

I think as I have got older I have become much more determined, and actually that does help me to focus on the positive, or at least to have a little more self-belief. Workwise, I still have ambition, and want to try to move up another rung on the ladder, and being negative and doubting my ability will not help me get to where I want to be.

Suffering with depression as well, it can very often be difficult to keep positive, as I get times when I feel pretty useless, and rubbish at everything. This drags me down until I turn inwards, and just want to stay in and see nobody (except my husband and daughter). I realise that it is not healthy and am trying to combat this.

Enough of the doom and gloom now, and back to being positive. I think sometimes just reflecting on the things that I have in my life, that I am so thankful for helps too. For example, I have a beautiful daughter, wonderful husband and family as well as a job that I enjoy.

The warmer weather always improves my mood as well. Seeing the sunshine seems to lift my spirits and I realise that there is lots to look forward to; family BBQs, days at the beach, swimming in the sea. all the little pleasures that make life so enjoyable. These are all positive events.

I am also blessed that I have wonderful friends, work colleagues and of course, the blogging community. Interaction with other people for me is very important. Despite my being reclusive at times, I still like to interact with others, and being able to do so online is great for me when I am in hermit mode!

So staying positive is, for me, all about being grateful for what I have, having goals and achieving them, and being surrounded by wonderful and supportive family and friends.

Episode 190: This is Me — March 2, 2015

Episode 190: This is Me

I decided that I would participate in Blogging 101 this month as I am still rough around the edges when it comes to blogging! I wanted to learn more so here I am on day one. The task for today is to introduce myself and tell everyone why I am here. so here goes!

To start with, my name is not actually Edwina. It is my middle name, and I originally used it because I wanted to remain anonymous. I don’t mind being called Edwina at all though, as it is much prettier than my actual name of Judy! As I have plastered my blog all over my Facebook account now, and am no longer anonymous, it doesn’t matter which of the two names you want to call me.

My blog is all about trying to see the funnier side of life. I don’t think we have enough laughter in our lives. There is all the hustle and bustle, and stresses of everyday life that wind us up and stress us out, and I just want to try to put a smile in there somewhere to break it up a bit!

The fact that I suffer from  anxiety can sometimes make it a bit tricky to try to think of something funny, but at the same time, I have found blogging does help me with my own issues, it is very cathartic.

Anyway, I like writing about the mundane (the everyday situations we all find ourselves in); the silly (I do love a bit of silliness! I am always showing myself up by doing the wrong thing, or putting my foot it); the wacky (occasionally, I read a news story that is really strange or weird) or just the bloody ridiculous! (Anything and everything else).Sometimes I even like to write a little rhyme or poem, just to add a bit of variety.

I like to put my own take on things, and although my personal stories and experiences are all true, I have written them from the humorous angle, preferring to see the funny side of a situation. The point of this is to make the reader (hopefully) smile, or if I am really lucky, chuckle. I would love it if I could get a guffaw, bellow or roar of laughter, but this blog is still young!

One last point. I do love to hear from people. I am lucky that I do have people who comment on my blog. I love to interact with people and hear their stories and experiences as well, especially the funny ones. Or just pop in to say hello.

As the great Charlie Chaplin once said,  ‘A day without laughter is a day wasted’
