You Won’t Believe What I Have Signed Up For. — September 25, 2015

You Won’t Believe What I Have Signed Up For.

You might remember that I mentioned a while ago something about a huge project that I wanted to do. Well I have decided that now is a good time to tell you what it is.

Last year I took part in the NaBloPoMo challenge (National Blog Post Month Challenge) which was to write a post every day throughout the month of November, which I managed to achieve. This year I wanted to participate in something bigger…..

I have decided to take part in NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month) which is due to take place in November. I know that it is going to be a monumental task to say the least but I would love to achieve it.

As many of you know, I do not really write fiction, but I have an idea for a story that is part memoir, from a very dark period in my life, that I think I might be able to make into a mini novel of 50 000 words. I am going to give it a bloody good try anyway!

Is anyone else going to have a go?

When Things Go Wrong. —

When Things Go Wrong.

You may remember that a couple of weeks ago I conducted a poll for Writing 101, which asked what type of blog posts you would prefer me to write. Here are the results:

  1. Posts about things going wrong  13 votes
  2. Posts about my family                 11 votes
  3. Something else of your choosing  3 votes
  4. Other                                             3 votes.

I am happy that you have chosen when things go wrong as your winner, as being clumsy, normally gives me a blog post or two to write about.  So, for Writing 101 ‘Take a cue from your readers’ post today, I thought I would share this story with you, that happened at work today.

The morning at work had been pretty busy as was normal, and of course, staff were thin on the ground as is also normal. I had decided to try to get some notes done after lunch, as I was due to go home in just over an hour, and I wanted to leave my colleague as little as possible to do. (Most of the staff on the ward prefer the 12 1/2 hour shifts, but I like the ‘short’ 7 1/2 hour ones).

I had even managed to make a coffee and was sitting at the table in the handover room, where there was a student and a Sister who was signing off some competencies for her.

Suddenly though, there was a commotion outside the room. A new patient that had arrived on the ward just previously was getting rather agitated and was threatening to whack a male nurse with his wooden walking stick! A female care assistant was trying to calm him down but he was swinging the stick around his head trying to lash out at whoever came near him.

The male nurse managed to get past him and into the room where I was writing the notes. Suddenly a stick came through the door and a loud THWACK sounded as he clouted the counter top just missing some of the cups that were there. Myself and the Sister jumped up and tied to get the stick off of him. We did manage to grab it but he was kicking at us and had more strength than we bargained for. We got the stick off of him and avoided the punches that he was dishing out (although the Sister got licked a couple of times) and I rushed to call security.

I went back into the room, as the patient was now sat down and chatting with the Care Assistant. Going to grab a much-needed swig of coffee, I hamfistedly ended up knocking the large mug of undrunk coffee all over the table. It went everywhere. The student’s notes were soaked through, as was everything else on the table, including the tortilla chips that a relative had brought in for us! Ooops, another day in paradise!

Free-For-All Friday #30 —

Free-For-All Friday #30

Wow, these Friday Free-for-Alls are coming around quickly. I have got a few treats for you this week. A sumptuous soup, A list for when you are losing the will, and a vibrant vignette, not to mention a fondness for fountain pens!  Please visit these blogs because it is so difficult not to choose every post that they write!

Joeyfully Stated As you might have guessed, this post is so much more than just about soup, although I got a warm, tingly feeling reading it!

Fear of The Reaper. We all have those days from Hell when we wonder why we had bothered getting up! This made me laugh ( I know I am mean, but some of it was funny, at least to me)!

My Write This is another blog that I found whilst on the Writing 101 course. I loved this story, and a few of his others too!

Travelling Banana. This post struck a chord with me, and brought back many fond memories.

Short and sweet again this week, but there are loads on these blogs to keep you going for  a while!

Happy Friday!!

Someone Just Walked Over My Grave. — September 24, 2015

Someone Just Walked Over My Grave.

“Nooooo, Get it off me!”

My mother’s anguished cries jolted me awake in my makeshift bed. My half-open eyes tried to focus in the darkness of the unfamiliar room. Silence. Eerie, stillness enshrouded me in a cloak of uneasiness. I shuddered, someone had just walked over my grave…

******

I awoke several hours later to the sound of the TV in the next room. I noticed Mum and Lewis had already got up. My younger sister Kat was stirring in her zed-bed, and  as she stretched and yawned, the bed springs squeaked in protest.

“Did you hear Mum last night Kat?

“No, why, were her and Lewis ‘at it?”

“Don’t be disgusting” I retorted, unnerved that it seemed to have only been me that had heard her.

****

After waiting an age to use the bathroom. (Eight people + one bathroom + an early start for a long trip = chaos, leg crossing, and frenzied banging on the door) I was hastily eating some toast that my sister-in-law Karen had rustled up for us all.

” Doug, is Bobby up yet? It is unusual for him not to be first up, especially today” Mum looked concerned. The events of the past few days had aged her considerably. Travelling from one end of the country to the other had been traumatic enough at such at time, especially when Nan had not been conscious when they had arrived.

The funeral yesterday had added an extra pallor to her face, highlighting the black smudges under her eyes.

” Please go and wake him up”, she begged Doug and Mark, my two brothers that had slept in the same room as my Uncle Bobby… although us kids never called him Uncle. He was special. Mum’s baby brother (despite now being 36) who was coming to live with us now that Nan had died, and we were all excited.

The boys had been gone for a good ten minutes, then they trooped into the room joined now by my other brother Charles, flanking Mum on all sides.

“We don’t know how to tell you this, Oh God Mum. Bobby is dead!”

The boys caught her as her legs buckled, and we all looked on in horror as an animalistic howl emanated from her body, which was now heaving and quaking with gut-wrenching sobs.

Lewis was by her side in instant, and Karen ushered the rest of us into the kitchen to give them some privacy,  then she went into the bedroom with Charles to check on Bobby, and phone the authorities.

‘He called out for Nan in the middle of the night” Mark informed the rest of us. ” I heard him shout ‘Mum’ twice then he went quiet. I thought he had gone back to sleep.”

“Nan must have come for him in the night” I had the feeling that as Nan had always looked after Bobby and given him all of her love and care since he needed extra, due to him having Muscular Dystrophy that she wanted him to go with her. They had never been apart, and although Mum loved and cherished him, he needed his own mother’s ministrations.

****

It was rather a palaver getting poor Bobby out of the tiny house. He was after all almost 20 stone with Nan’s loving care, and manoeuvering him down the narrow staircase was a Herculean task. It was accomplished and Bobby was taken to the same undertaker that had just buried my Nan.

Tears and shock were mingled with practicalities of arranging another funeral. Trips into town to order more wreaths. Suitcases unpacked, more groceries bought; schools and workplaces phoned to explained the situation

****

Evening closed in, dark, cold and miserable, like us.

“I had a dreadful nightmare last night”  blurted out my mother.” I felt like someone was trying to put me into a coffin; Mum was trying to tell me something. ”

I shivered. Someone had walked over my grave….

This is in response to Writing 101. Re-create a single day.

Meet Hugh’s Views & News-Interview

Two great bloggers, one brilliant interview 🙂

Ronovan's avatarronovanwrites

I blog. Amazing discovering isn’t it? Being a blogger you also follow other bloggers. Sometimes you don’t know how you ended up making the acquaintance of someone, yes I can make that joke about myself but no one else can (amnesiac rights), but you are glad you did stumble upon someone. One such person grabbed my attention not only because he liked my attempts at writing, but one day a photograph he posted jumped out at me. No it did not literally leap from the page, at least I don’t think it did. Perhaps he has sort of 3D Mac power. Yes, I am afraid to say that he is one of . . . those people.

Thinking now perhaps it was 3D and knocked the memory out of me. I do have a habit of following it  hitting my head. But I do have the memory that this man…

What I see in a Tree —

What I see in a Tree

Majestically it stands there

Surveying all it sees

The winter branches barren

Devoid of lush green leaves.

****

Yet life is still within it

Just waiting for the spring

When its buds start blooming

And the birds begin to sing

****

In summer comes its glory

When it wears a party dress

Of several different colours

Its beauty outshines the rest

****

Then autumn comes a-calling

And it starts a slow striptease

The leaves are changing colour

And are dropping in the breeze

****

This is the work of nature

Of death and then re-birth

The barren and the beautiful

The treasures from the earth.

This is a poem I wrote some time ago, that I thought would fit the bill perfectly for my understanding of a vignette, the task for today’s Writing 101 course.

Wacky Word Wednesday #20 —

Wacky Word Wednesday #20

This is week 20 of my Wacky Wordy Wednesday feature where I have fun with a word that is weird, wonderful or just plain wacky! It is always a pleasure hunting down words that I think people will like; either because they are unfamiliar to them, or as a blast from the past that brings back memories along with a smile.

Today I have found a word that I love the sound of. This is true of many of the words that I choose. I can burst out laughing when I hear a word like this, this isn’t meant to be funny, but just has that comedic ring to it, (I know, I am odd)! So here is my offering today.

Boffin. This is the expert, the geeky bod with his head in a science book.  A mad professor, wild haired and wild-eyed, cooking  up potions in his laboratory, or inventing gadgets like the top of an egg chopper-off-er, or other eccentricities.

Wherever there are sheds filled with assorted odds and ends that nobody wants, there will be a brain-bonce poring over blueprints and strange looking diagrams, cobbling together all manner of ‘handy’ household items! Sometimes, they even work!

Pleased To Meet You. — September 22, 2015

Pleased To Meet You.

Mike arrived home, furious. He had rushed home on orders from his wife, and just managed to catch the train.  Exhausted, he tried to claim the last seat, but was barged out of the way by a lanky, long-haired lout, who told him to ‘eff off Grandad’.

Mum had gone all out thought Liz as she glanced through to the dining room. Clasping Zed’s hand she dragged him in to meet her parents.

“This is Zed:” you finally got to meet him.  She looked at Mike, “I’m so excited Dad, we’re expecting a baby”.

Zed reddened, “We’ve met, Congratulations Grandad!”

This was written as a challenge for Writing 101, I have chosen to write a story in 100 words as it is so different in both word count and in content to what I normally write; fiction writing is totally out of my comfort zone.

Farewell to Tuesday Tidbit —

Farewell to Tuesday Tidbit

For the last couple of months I have been partaking in writing a Tuesday Tidbit post. I first came across this via two of my blogging friends Rob from The V Pub and Erika

It was great fun thinking up all sorts of naughtiness and also seeing what the others came up with as well. Ritu and Rich were also on board, and that is how our little Tidbit family was formed.

Anyway, from out of the blue today, Rob has decided that he is closing his blog for good. I am shocked and upset that he has reached this decision,  and don’t really feel like writing a Tidbit post for tomorrow.

I am going to put those on hold for now (don’t worry there is always enough smut and innuendo in my other posts anyway) as it won’t be the same without Rob.

When I am Not Writing…… — September 21, 2015

When I am Not Writing……

I spend far too long on my blog, either writing posts or catching up with reading other bloggers’ but it is something that I do truly enjoy. However, for our Writing 101 post today, I am to tell you about what I like to do when I am not writing to re-charge my batteries!

Well, most of the time, when I am not writing, it is because I am at work. Most of you know what  do at work anyway, and although I do have a rant now and again, there are some wonderful and precious moments at work that I am privileged to be a part of.

I love some of the quips that my elderly patients come out with, such as “I have had a few pricks in my time”. An innocent remark, but not to someone like me who roared their head off! I asked another lady to “just swing your legs round please”, as I was helping her to get out of bed. She informed me that she “doesn’t do a lot of swinging nowadays.”  How can comments like that not brighten up the day!

Also, on the other side, yesterday, in amongst all of the chaos, I noticed a patient in my bay was not going to have long left in this world, and after we informed the doctors, who in turn informed her family, who left straight away to try to get to see her (they lived 90 mins away). Myself and two other staff took turns in staying with her, holding her hand and stroking her hair, as we did not want her to be on her own in her final moments. She actually managed to hang on until the family came, and passed away peacefully in their company.

I am not one for going out too much, being a bit of a hermit, so another thing I like to do, is a bit of home sewing, trying my hand at making various things, that are rather hit and miss in their success. I am also in the middle of 2 knitting projects as well. The one at the bottom will all be sewn together once I have knitted enough squares. I don’t want to give too much away as to what the end result is yet, but I need to get a bloody move on!!!

So that is pretty much it, unless you count the times I do venture out and a bit of Candy Crushing when the mood takes me!
