Just Jot it January 21st – Mittens — January 21, 2016

Just Jot it January 21st – Mittens

Well, today’s Just Jot it January prompt word brought to us by lovely Linda is a bit of a fun one, ‘mittens.’

The first thing that springs to mind with this is those little rounded  gloves that encompass all of the fingers together and keeps the thumb separate. Great for keeping the hands warm, but hopeless if you try to do anything with them on. Getting money out of a purse being particularly tricky. This means that they have to be taken off quite a bit, thereby defeating the object of keeping your hands warm!

I remember when my daughter was young, she had a pair of mittens tied together with a long, skinny length of matching fabric that would be threaded through the sleeves of her coat. This was supposed to keep them from getting lost as they would dangle just below her hands if taken off. I think these turned about to be more hassle than they were worth, though.

Trying to get a squirming, wriggling toddler into her coat whilst avoiding tangling her up with the bloody  stringed mittens was no mean feat! Not to mention we were both hot and sweaty after the struggle and she didn’t want the damned thing on anyway!

Just Jot It January 20th – Surreptitiously — January 20, 2016

Just Jot It January 20th – Surreptitiously

jjj-2016

I do love the sound of today’s prompt word for Linda’s Just Jot it January, ‘surreptitiously’. The fact that it is rather sly and sneaky, stealthy and secret (sorry, I am getting into Wacky Word Wednesday mode), appeals to me.

I am pretty rubbish at trying to do things on the quiet, as my ham-fisted attempts at being unobtrusive very often fail miserably. I remember years ago when I was staying at a friend’s house, trying to creep in unnoticed from a night out, so as not to wake everyone up. The combination of a few drinks, low lighting and my natural ability, had me banging into things, wincing as something clattered to the floor, then being unable to stop laughing at my friend’s cross expression, ensured that the entire household knew we had arrived.

When Miss Hap was little, she was a very fussy eater and hated vegetables. I worried about getting them into her so would mash them up, mix them with other foods she liked or try to make a picture on her plate, you know that using a tomato for a nose or broccoli for hair, stuff like that(I never said I had a good imagination, and my creativity only applies to words)!  It never really worked very well; she was far too smart for my amateurish attempts to trick her into eating her veg.

No, it seems that being surreptitious is not something that I am cut out for. Shame really, as I rather fancied myself as a Secret Agent!

Just Jot it January 19th – Climate

jjj-2016A great prompt word today for Linda’s Just Jot it January challenge. Being British, I think it must be ingrained in me to be obsessed about the weather. We love to moan about it whether it is too hot, too cold, too wet, too…..well you get the idea!

Actually, on the whole, we are pretty fortunate with the weather over here. Now, I know that might sound a bit controversial to some, but we don’t tend to get the extremes of weather that other countries do.

Take for example Australia, I know from a few of our Aussie blogger friends that temperatures recently got as high as 42 degrees C which is about 107 F! I cannot even begin to imagine that kind of heat, and as much as I love the sun, the heat does not agree with me.

Yes, I know you have air-conditioning and are mostly prepared when temperatures soar, which is more than can be said for us. As soon as we get a heatwave (a couple of days on the trot of 30 degrees or more), the country gets hysterical. First off, we have a drought (we don’t always need a heatwave for this, but it helps), which leads to a hosepipe ban. It is not the green and pleasant land then, Oh no, brown, parched fields and drooping, wilting flowers are a sad sight to behold. Then we get the panic buying, The shops sell out of bottled water and you can’t buy a fan for love nor money!

Conversely, my Canadian friend talked of it getting as cold as -22 C which is -7 F. Again I can’t begin to think how I would cope in such freezing cold.  Our country goes into meltdown if we get a bit of snow for a couple of days. Cars abandoned on Motorways, the railways service grinding to a halt, as it is the ‘wrong kind of snow’ for them to deal with. Councils running out of grit for the roads as they were unprepared (despite weather warnings), and most of the schools closing down as staff can’t get in. Some areas get completely cut off as well, trapped in their homes.  Again panic buying sets in for those able to get out. People risking life and limb to go and get bread and milk  in case they get snowed in too!

I am quite grateful for the climate that I live in actually, although of course, it won’t stop me moaning about it!

Just Jot it January 18th – Elegance — January 18, 2016

Just Jot it January 18th – Elegance

jjj-2016

This is a great word for Linda’s Just Jot it January prompt today – ‘elegance.’ It is something that I am truly lacking in, but wish that I had.

I thought I would dig out a poem that I wrote some time ago for those of you that have not seen it yet, about my desire to be more graceful and elegant!

Oh how I wish I was graceful

and not a disaster on wheels

I trip over every obstacle

And my shoes have got broken off heels

I try so hard to be upright

But always fall flat on my face

My body is covered in bruises

From where I have fallen from grace

I long to be elegant and classy

But that is just not to be

Whilst others are sipping their cocktails

I’m knocking over my tea.

Life for me would be perfect

If only I was more chic

Instead of awkward and bumbling

And coming across as a freak

Oh how I wish I was graceful

But life is not very fair

So I’ll carry on being clumsy

And pretending that I just don’t care!

Just Jot it January 17th – Collection — January 17, 2016

Just Jot it January 17th – Collection

jjj-2016

I am not sure what to write about for Linda’s Just Jot it January prompt word today. We have been given ‘collection’ to use. I am not really a collector of things. Some people collect spoons, teapots, beer mats, all manner of things really, but that is not for me.

I did have a small record collection, but that got left behind in a move, I had some cassette tapes, but they are amongst my other clutter up in the loft, and as for my CD collection, well it is probably, at least, twenty  years out of date! I haven’t bought music for years, and never buy DVDs. I do have a lot of books, though.

I am a little too obsessive to be a collector, I think.  If I started a collection of something then I would constantly be adding to it, never knowing when to stop until I ended up on ‘Hoarders’ or some such programme. I would then get het up if I had to part with any of it.

I am very possessive of my possessions actually and am not keen on chucking anything out, especially if someone has given it to me. I have recently had some help from my sister on decluttering the shelves in my front room that were so full up, you couldn’t actually see anything!

Every photo of Miss Hap from a baby to present, that was taken by a school  or nursery photographer,  were fighting for space; some teacups that were given to me when dad died were also vying for a spot, as were the many candles that I have got all over the place!

It pained me a great deal to put most of the photos in the loft, and get rid of some of the candles that had seen better days! However, the shelves look much better, and that actually makes me feel better!

For me, collections equate to clutter and I have already got enough of that as it is!

Just Jot It January 16th – What #SoCS — January 16, 2016

Just Jot It January 16th – What #SoCS

jjj-2016

Today I am going to be combining two of Linda’s challenges, Just Jot it January, and also Stream of Consciousness, please visit her blog if you want to find out details of how to join in. You will find loads of other goodies there too, so set aside some time!

What I love about the Stream of Consciousness posts is the freedom to go wherever the words take me. Yes, I have a prompt word, but it is still flexible enough for me to be able to go where I want to with it.

The negative side of writing one of these posts is that, apart from sorting out typos (thank God for that), we are not to edit the post at all. Now, I am someone who tends to just go off and write whatever comes to mind anyway, but I have been known to edit when it doesn’t make sense, which is more often than I would like.

I have to say, I am in awe of those people that always turn out a perfectly written blog post, and to be fair, it is common courtesy to ensure there are no typos or grammatical mistakes as the reader does not want to be mentally correcting as they go along. However, I have occasionally cringed as I have looked back on my previous posts and found the odd typo or spelling mistake, which I have immediately corrected.  I find that the more I look at something, the more I glaze over, and then I don’t end up seeing any errors.

I am a novice at writing Stream of Consciousness Posts, having only written a couple before, but funnily enough, these are the posts that I have struggled with not being able to edit, the most! Weird!

Just Jot in January 15th – Leadership — January 15, 2016

Just Jot in January 15th – Leadership

jjj-2016

For today’s prompt for Just Jot it January  by Linda, we have been given ‘leadership.’ Now, I have never really thought of myself as being a leader or having the necessary qualities to become one. Having always been quiet and shy, telling others what to do, or being responsible for their actions is something that would not appeal to me at all when I was younger. I would much rather blend in, and do my job, asking for help when needed or perhaps show someone else how to do something, but almost be apologetic about if for knowing more than they did.

However, there are times in life when it is essential to take charge of a situation, be it work, social or domestic  if things are to run smoothly. Surprisingly, I kind of fell into a leadership role without thinking too much about it. My ex-husband bought a cafe which he later converted into a kebab shop. I had to help run them both which meant that I was in charge of several staff, some of whom were his or my family members, or both! As you can imagine, it did get a bit fraught at times, but I managed to maintain relationships as well as help keep the business running smoothly.

Of course, as soon as we have children then, like it or not, we become role models and definitely need to hone our leadership skills, as children pick up on the slightest hesitancy or inconsistency as I have found to my cost! If we want them to grow up into decent, caring, honest and hard-working adults, then we have to lead by example. When they don’t behave as we want them to, then we also have to find a way to change this, which is where things can get tricky!

I remember when I worked in an office of a holiday brochure distribution company, having quite a strict boss. He was a director of the company in his 40s and could get quite shirty at times, as well as being pretty rude. (His people skills were not the best). However, the thing that I respected about him, was that apparently he had started off at this company as a young lad of 16 emptying the rubbish, then worked his way up to the top. This meant he knew all aspects of the business inside out, and when they were short staffed in the warehouse, he rolled his sleeves up and went down there to help them out.

I have realised over the years, that being a good leader is not about strutting around, shouting orders to others expecting them to bow down to your every command (well it is pretty handy in the military), it is much more complex than that. There are many qualities to being a good leader, like treating others with respect, and mucking in together when needed, as well as listening to and learning from others. I know that when needed, I can step up and be a leader!

Just Jot it January 14th – Motivation. — January 14, 2016

Just Jot it January 14th – Motivation.

jjj-2016

‘Motivation’ is the prompt word we have for Linda’s Just Jot it January today. I would say that normally I am quite a motivated person. I know what I have to do, and can usually get stuck straight into it. I am a creature of habit and routines, so many of the mundane things I need to do are carried out on automatic pilot almost. I don’t need to think too much about it, I just get on with it.

When I took part in NaNoWriMo, I was not sure that I would be able to get the motivation to write every day in order to achieve the required word count at the end of it. It was something that I really wanted to achieve though and I wanted to keep up the enthusiasm and momentum that I had at the start of the month. I ended up setting aside a couple of hours each night purely for writing, no distractions if possible. That was my way of getting myself motivated, incorporating my writing into a routine.

Then depression sets in and it all goes out the window.

Isn’t is strange how just getting washed and dressed can seem like such a monumental task? Why bother, when it is easier to just sit around in pyjamas. Who needs to do housework? After all, it is only going to get messed up again, and everywhere is cluttered up anyway. Do I really have to go out and see people when all I want to do is stay at home and be on my own? I don’t feel like talking and smiling and ‘being nice.’ I wanted to get stuck into some sewing projects but have only had one or two days lately where I have had the oomph to get everything out and do it. I was pleased when I did make something, though. It was even a struggle getting myself to my CBT session (Cognitive behavioural therapy) as I was so anxious!

However, I still manage to find the motivation to go countless times to the kitchen and get myself a snack. I can also be sociable here in the blogosphere chatting with people and posting ‘funny’ stories and poems. I can even still play Candy Crush for a while.

Hopefully, my missing motivation will soon find its way back!

Just Jot it January 13th – Sacrifice — January 13, 2016

Just Jot it January 13th – Sacrifice

For Linda’s Just Jot it January today, we have been given ‘sacrifice’ for our prompt word. This to me, is quite a weighty word, especially when you consider the original meaning of offering up the life of an animal or person to a God. However, we now tend to use it to mean giving something up that we value for the sake of helping someone else, or doing something else.

In the society that we live in, we are often told that it is possible to ‘have it all.’ Successful careers, well-adjusted children,  a good education, happy marriages, and domestic bliss. Really? I am not sure that we can truly achieve all of those things without some kind of sacrifice.

Looking back at the 1950’s for example, in the era when many women stayed home to look after the children, and men were the main breadwinners working long hours to support their families, it is clear that neither sex had it all. Yes, the children may grow up being lovingly nurtured by their mother, but many hardly saw their fathers who went out to work before they were awake and came home when they were in bed.

The good education that a woman may have received would not be fully utilised, as many gave up work as soon as they married, and did not pursue any of their own interests, some were actually discouraged from doing so!  A happy marriage may well be enjoyed by both, but I would not be surprised if there may have been a bit of resentment from the wife, striving to achieve domestic bliss with homecooked meals and a spotless house, plus always looking her best for when her husband came home.

Fast forward to the present day,  and a whole range of changes. Men and women are no longer expected to conform to stereotypes.  We have moved on considerably, and now women are no longer expected to stay at home keeping house, they can go out to work, get whatever education they like, and still manage to raise a family. This is the same as men have always been able to do (well except for keeping house of course, but now many men choose to do this for various reasons). We also have same-sex couples, some of whom are bringing up children, but the problems remain the same, we all want to be able to ‘have it all.’

Something surely has got to give. Some people employ nannies and housekeepers so that they can work and not have to worry about the house and kids. Some have one partner staying at home whilst the other goes out to work. Some put off having children to establish their career first, others do it the other way around, having children young, then try to forge a career. It sounds to me like quite a few sacrifices are being made in order to ‘have it all.’

Do you agree, have you managed to find a way to have it all?

Just Jot It January 12th – Skulls. — January 12, 2016

Just Jot It January 12th – Skulls.

What an unusual word choice for Linda’s Just Jot it January prompt today! Now, funnily enough, I do like a skull! I know that might sound a bit macabre but there are plenty of designs out there that feature skulls and can even look quite pretty. As you can see below, this is quite cute. I actually broke the inside of it so my tablet kept falling out (thank God I didn’t break it). I was at a patient’s house and he admired it (he was the one that showed me his toenails that he kept after they had been removed) so I told him he could have it when I got a new one!

My Tablet
My old tablet case for work

I also have a dress that I made with skull fabric which I thought was quite nice and Miss Hap looks so cute in hers with matching bandana! I have a skull hairclip as well actually!

Skull dress

A skull can give away so much about a person too. A few months ago, I took a Future Learn course ‘Identifying the Dead’ which was extremely interesting. If you are into forensics, it is a fascinating course that has penty of interaction, and was actually great fun too!
