Wacky Word Wednesday

Well, here we are, Wednesday again and ready to dig up and dust off a weird, wacky or wonderful word to share with you. Now, I have been a bit naughty this week (no, that THAT kind of naughty), and nicked a word from my lovely friend David. I have to admit to not having heard of this word before, so I shall be educating myself, as well as hopefully introducing some of you to a new word too!

Blatherskite.  Well, this is a babbling and blubbering kind of a word. The kind of gobshite that talks a load of gibberish, but loves the sound of their own voice! The blusterer  and boaster, pontificating and prattling on despite the snores and groans from the unfortunate listeners!

This talking a load of twaddle, nattering on about nonsense, uttering unintelligibly, or even gabbling a load of gobbledegook! Sounds like me when I get nervous!

Ode to my Friend — March 22, 2016

Ode to my Friend

Tomorrow is such a sad day for me

It is when I say my final goodbye

Your time on this earth has now ended

You’re going to join the stars in the sky

You were my best friend in childhood

We were together all the time

I loved spending time round at your house

And you were always welcome at mine.

Just like me you were clumsy

Always tripping over your feet

Once you gave me a piggy back

And we both fell over in the street!

You were always so very thoughtful

And every Valentine’s Day

You sent me a card and a present

 Even when I moved away!

Our lives moved in different directions

And yet, we never lost touch

Always there in the background

Despite, not seeing each other much.

I know you told me your feelings

And we decided that we wanted to date

We went out together at the wrong time

And ended up just staying as mates

I hadn’t seen you for ages

Then bumped into you when I had gone out

We stopped and chatted like old times

Your life seemed all sorted out

I can’t believe you have gone now

And that I won’t see you again

But I have such wonderful memories

And with me they will always remain.

Photography 101: Architecture & Monochrome

Architecture

Today is another double whammy for photography 101. We are not only to look out for architecture that catches our eye, but to then see how it looks in Monochrome.

I have noticed a few of the houses nearby where I live have these little trellis type designs either side of their front doors.

They are sort of lacey and as far as I know, serve no purpose. I wondered how they would look in black and white.

I went over to Picmonkey and applied ‘Silverscreen’ to the photo, thinking it might add a touch of glamour. Actually, it just looks as though I have got an old photo from the 50s kicking around!

You may have noticed that I rarely talk about my books and try and flog them on my blog site.  So this is an extra blog just to tell everyone that I am shortly going to publish book #6.

If you have ever read any one of my biographies you will be aware that I have written about subjects as diverse as splitting the atom, health, investments, advertisements, mayoral speeches, set books in English literature, rural life in Africa and toilets in townships. The list is endless, and even I can’t remember all the topics.

I hold the view that writers should be capable of writing anything, in any genre for any media.

Why all this blurb? Because my next book is something entirely different.

In 1989, when it was almost complete, I put it under the bed and it has remained there until late last year. Why? Firstly I…

Photography 101: Pop and Colour.

Today for the Photography 101 course, we are encouraged to focus on colour and how it can change the perception of a photo.

Again, we are to keep in mind the point of view, and the light in the photo.

Coloured clouds

I have not had much chance to take any photos today so had to look back to see what I already had that might be suitable for the challenge. I thought this photo of the sky that I took looking up between two houses was pretty colourful.

I love the pinky clouds in the blue sky, with just a little golden stripe the the bottom of the picture. The dark silhouettes of the houses seem to  enhance the pastel colours of the cloudy sky even more.

Ronovan’s Writes Weekly Haiku Poetry Prompt Challenge #89: ‘Shower’ & ‘Play’

I was going to be naughty this week for Ronovan’s weekly haiku challenge, given that the prompt words were ‘shower’ and ‘play’ but I decided to unleash my inner child instead!

A Special Guest Comes Calling. — March 20, 2016

A Special Guest Comes Calling.

Me and Daffy

Guess who came to dinner on Friday? It was none other than the lovely Daffy ( well actually it is Sandra), the wonderful person behind Wild Daffodil blog.

She was up this way on a textiles course and asked if we wanted to meet up. Of course, I did! After all, we had been in contact for a while, and as is the way with blogging, I already felt that I knew her quite well, so it would be a delight to meet her in person.

I was certainly not disappointed. Daffy is bright, bubbly and a real pleasure to be around. She is also very artistic and creative which sadly, I am not! It was wonderful looking at what she had made in her textile course and the thought and love she puts into her projects.

We had a very pleasant evening with lots of laughs, (even Mr Grump was cracking smiles). Unfortunately, it was over too soon though as the time had raced by at an alarming rate.

The whole experience just reinforced my belief of how wonderful and genuine bloggers are. We both certainly agreed that we are privileged to belong to such a wonderful community of friends.

Writespiration # 83 – Blackout. — March 19, 2016

Writespiration # 83 – Blackout.

For this week’s Writespiration, Sacha has given us ‘blackout’- to use as our prompt. I wasn’t sure which way to go with it, but this is what I ended up with!

black-out-jpeg

As I sit there watching the big screen

All settled in for the night

Everything’s suddenly gone quiet

And someone has turned off the light.

The pitch black makes me feel nervous

I don’t like being here on my own

I can’t haven’t got any candles

And the where in the hell is my phone?

It feels like the set of a movie

Where the killer is hiding upstairs

Waiting until the right moment

To capture his prey, unawares

My heart is starting to race now

My throat is all parched and dry

I need to go to the toilet

And I’m just about ready to cry!

When, suddenly a massive explosion

Of light and sound dims my fears

I can relax and calm down now

As the opening credits appear.

We have rather a topical prompt word for Linda’s Stream of Consciousness this week with ‘egg’.

Now, of course, my first thought was Easter as that is hurtling towards us at tremendous speed. I am sure I could go on and on about Easter eggs, but that will only make me hungry and I haven’t got any chocolate in the house at the moment!!

I am going to go totally down another path and talk about the good old British sports days of yesteryear. When I was at school, I remember them being lots of fun (we are talking about primary school here). A lot of effort went into organising the games, and of course, parents were invited too.

This meant that all the children wanted to try their best to impress their parents. We had all the usual running races, but there were the fun ones too like the egg and spoon race (being a klutz I was rubbish at this), the sack race (pretty exhausting this one, jumping about in a small sack trying to get to the finish line), and the three-legged race, being tied at the ankles to another child, and having to run in unison to the finish line.

As you can imagine with these races, there was a lot of tripping and falling over, but we just got up and kept going.

It was all very competitive in those days too, it was encouraged to want to win. At the end of it,  there was usually a mum’s and a dad’s race. I don’t remember my mum ever taking part in this and I can’t say I blame her, as that was also pretty competitive!

Last time I went to Miss Hap’s sports day at primary school, there were none of the races I remembered so well. There was a skipping race, that she managed to win despite losing a shoe! It is not about the winning now, though, everyone get points and prizes which are totted up at the end.

There were  no mums and dads, shoes off, sleeves rolled up, ready to run for glory down the length of the school field elbowing away their rivals (Thank God)! No, it is all very civilised now. For a start, most of the schools use a local sporting facility or recreation ground as they don’t have a field. The area they cordon off for the races are much shorter than I remember. The kids all have their bottles of water, sunhats and suncream on. We didn’t, if we burnt to a crisp then so be it!

Sometimes change can be a good thing!

Photography 101: Mystery and Lighting Effects — March 18, 2016

Photography 101: Mystery and Lighting Effects

Mystery

Today we are to find something that is a bit of a mystery and photograph it. We are also to think about different types of lighting effects. We have been given some suggestions as follows:

  •  Take your photo during the “Golden Hour”: the time just after sunrise or before sunset when natural light is soft and takes on color tones of its own.
  • Illuminate your subject with a flashlight or candle.
  • Take a street shot, using car headlights or street lamps to light your scene.
  • Try a photo during the day when the bulk of the sun is hidden, revealing patches or bursting rays of light.

I have not got a lot of time today so have taken a shot during the ‘golden hour’ of some houses over the back of where I live. It is always interesting to wonder what people are getting up to behind closed doors; well, it is to me anyway, being the nosey parker that I am!
