Free-For-All Friday #12

Welcome to my Free-for-all Friday, where I get to share with you some of the wonderful posts that I have read this week. As you know I like all type of blogs, so there is a mix of all sorts to suit everyone. Please check out these blogs if you have not already done so, as they are all brilliant.

Creatopath Rachel has all sorts on her blog, from crafts to flash fiction. This post was a short story which I thought was very cleverly written.

Fourth Generation Farm Girl Tonya is amazing at writing acrostic poems. I admire her ability to make them look easy when I know they certainly are not.

Skipah’s Realm This post had me rocking with laughter. I know I have a bit of a sick sense of humour and it was not a funny thing to happen to someone, but the way he described it had me doubled over!

Hugh’s Views and News I love this blog as it is so varied; everything from flash fiction stories that really capture the imagination, to posts by Toby the dog (when he get Hugh out of the way). This post is one that makes me feel proud to be British.

My OBT I really enjoy Donna’s blog. She is a very cultured lady who has also a taste for the wacky and wonderful (definitely my kind of person). Check out this post to see what weirdness she has uncovered.

Daily Echo.Sue is a very talented author and poet, She is also a brilliant raconteur and this post had me in hysterics. I love a good laugh (especially at other people’s ineptitude, as I have so many of my own, that I can really empathise) and this did not disappoint.

So there you have this weeks selection which you are sure to enjoy.

Have a wonderful Friday!

Episode 342: WordPress Weirdness! — May 24, 2015

Episode 342: WordPress Weirdness!

I know some people have mentioned about missing comments, and other weird happenings on WordPress lately and I have noticed a few odd things myself.

Just now I had 49 comments in my spam folder which is utterly unheard of for me, as usually I just get 4 or 5 at most. Some of these however, were from people whose blogs I follow and are regular commenters!

Luckily I checked through them and restored them, but it is very annoying, I am always extremely happy when people take the time to comment and I reply back as soon as I can to EVERY comment.

I just want to say that if I do not reply within 24 hours to your comment then it is because I haven’t seen it. I really so not want anyone to think that I am being rude as I appreciate hearing from people.

I hope WordPress sort themselves out!

Free-For-All Friday #11

It’s Friday which means it is time to share my favourite posts of the last week. I have got a great selection for your enjoyment and all of the blogs are well worth a visit.

Behind the White Coat  This post takes me back a few years before all of the Health and Safety rules and regulations; when kids were kids and played without worrying about getting hurt!

My Travels With Depression I have been following this blog for quite a while and find that we have a very similar sense of humour. This post really made me laugh as It is a situation I can imagine myself being in.

My Friday Blog Josh has a habit of telling things exactly as they are! He has strong views that I do not always totally agree with but in this post he totally hits the nail on the head!

The Off Key Of Life I really admire George for writing this post. He is a real gentleman that does not like to see laddish and loutish behaviour towards women.

Hugh’s Views and News  I have been following Hugh for quite a while now and he is one of the nicest people around, This post is very topical, and I love Hugh’s enthusiasm as well as optimism!

The V-Pub  I have not been following this blog for very long but it is always consistently good! Rob is quite a character and very funny.

Free-For-All Friday #10

Welcome to my Friday Free-For-All, the 10th one already! There have been some more wonderful posts this week which I would like to share with you. As usual, I have tried to choose a variety of different  blogs which are all brilliant in their own way. Please do go and check them all out.

runawaynunsandleprechauns This is rather a funny little poem that really made me laugh. It is short and sweet and I know you will enjoy it, especially if you are a dog lover.

Dublin Housewife This is another hilarious post from the wonderful Bernie Rose! I just love her style of writing; she is witty, and really brings her conversations to life.

A Momma’s View This post is a reminder to us all really. It may seem pretty obvious, but the point needs to be re-iterated as it does not seem to be sinking in for some people, which is a terrible shame.

The Indecisive Eejit I included this post because I could really resonate with the frustration felt here. Sometimes, despite our best efforts we still can’t seem to get anywhere. I really admire this blogger and have the utmost respect for her.

But I Smile Anyway. Ritu is one of the most creative and talented people around. I don’t know how she fits everything into her day, and manage to stay so cheerful and bright. She is also an inspirational teacher who any child would be lucky to have.

Chronicles of an Orange-Haired Woman This is a blog that I have only just started following, however it has so much to offer, This particular post I can identify with so much!

I hope you all enjoy these posts as much as I did. Have a wonderful Friday!

Episode 329: You Know You Are Addicted to Blogging When…… — May 14, 2015

Episode 329: You Know You Are Addicted to Blogging When……

  • One of the first things you do in the morning is to log on to see whether you have any comments or not.
  • You have the ‘WordPress’ App on every device you own and are not afraid to use it!
  • Even when at work, as soon as you have a break, you check your mobile phone for notifications.
  • Whenever something happens, especially if it is funny, you have to blog about it.
  • You have to put your mobile on ‘silent’ at night, because if you hear it vibrate you cannot rest until you have looked at it to see if it is a notification from WordPress.
  • Your family knows exactly where to find you…at your laptop blogging.
  • In conversation, you find yourself saying…”Oh yes, I read/heard about that on (insert blog name).”
  • You find yourself becoming interested in statistics for once in your life, just so you can figure out how many ‘hits’ you have had!
  • You lap up any information you can that gives hints and tips on becoming a better blogger!
Episode 315: Reflections: Blogging From A-Z — May 5, 2015

Episode 315: Reflections: Blogging From A-Z

I took part in the Blogging From A-Z Challenge for the very first time this year. This was because two blogging friends had also signed up for it and thought that I might also be interested, as we had all participated in the November NaBloPoMo together. I agreed as I love a challenge then promptly put it to the back of my mind until I was jolted back to reality, There was only about a week to go and most of the participants seemed to be going with a Theme, something I hadn’t even considered.

Actually, it was pretty obvious what my choice would be given my love of words, and once I had decided on that, I didn’t worry about it. My blogging style is always ‘off the cuff.’ I decide what I am going to write normally just before I write it! However, I have to say, I did do a little preparation for this challenge, as I wrote one or two posts in advance the day before. and all of my posts were scheduled.

Finding words was not too much of a problem. There were some that I had considered anyway. and the others seemed to fall into place as well. Even the letter ‘X’ was not the problem I thought it would be!

So, i would really like to thank Wendy, who did a wonderful take on the challenge by writing letters to people, characters or objects, and chose a song each day, and Mary-Anne who gave us a wonderful story about a hand-sewn quilt she was given by her students (she is a teacher), and what each square represented. I had a lot of support from them both for which I am extremely grateful.

I also met some new bloggers along the way Diary of A Dublin Housewife, Kim L Hine, and All But The Kitchen Sink to name but a few, It was also great that some of the blogs that I already followed were taking part as well LindaGHill, RonovansWrites,  Joeyfullystated and My Spanglish Familia.

I have been extremely lucky in that I had some really positive comments and lots of interaction during the challenge from my blogging friends, and I think, their encouragement and support spurred me on. I really wanted anyone that read my posts to be entertained, and I tried hard to find words that would do that.

I miss the challenge already, It was such fun to do. I loved how different bloggers interpreted it and the subjects they covered, I liked the fact that I had a focus, and a ‘prompt’ as it were. I don’t usually write about anything specific and it made a change to do that. I can’t wait for next year!

I would definitely take part in the challenge again next year and would encourage others to give it a go as well.

Episode 313: Five Things I Have Learned About Blogging! — May 4, 2015

Episode 313: Five Things I Have Learned About Blogging!

  • Don’t forget to proofread! Now I am one of those people who, once I have written something, unless there is a glaringly obvious mistake, then I might not notice it, despite re-reading the whole post to check for errors. I have hit ‘publish’ before then have gone into the article at a later date and found a typo in the very first word! How embarrassing! Mind you, even worse is when I have commented on other blogs and made a few typos!
  • Interact with others. This may seem bloody obvious, but you can’t afford to be shy. I know I was very daunted by commenting on other blogs, but we all like to know we are doing something right, so a little encouraging remark can go a very long way; sometimes you might even get a reply!
  • Be careful what you say. Again, this might be blindingly obvious, but if you are having a bit of a rant and rave about someone who has annoyed you, the chances are they will find out about it! Once a post has been published, it is there for all to see, so think twice about putting up drunken pictures of yourself in a heap on the floor. It’s not pretty!
  • Learn how to connect with social media, If you want people to read your blog, and are a dunce when it comes to using social media, you need to learn how it works. So many people use it, that you are missing out on a huge audience if you do not know how to share on these sites. This is a work in progress for me, which I am getting to the bottom of as it is going to take a bit of time, I think!
  • Be passionate about what you write. Nobody wants to read a boring post that drones on and on with no feeling or emotion. Who wants to be dragged down to the depths of despair by a dismal post? Exactly! I find that when I have written a positive and enthusiastic post then I get more comments and likes. Readers can pick up on when you are passionate or excited about something, and it influences the way they feel about it too.
Blogging From A-Z Challenge: ‘R’ — April 21, 2015

Blogging From A-Z Challenge: ‘R’

Rrrrrrrrrrrr we are in our stride now with the Blogging From A-Z challenge and are racing ahead rapidly with the letter ‘R.’ This letter has a bit of everything too, its top half is rotund while the bottom reclines at an angle.  I have found a lovely word for today, another of my favourites….Let’s get on with it then……

Ribald. This is a wonderful old-fashioned word, it is the bawdy, behaviour of the boozed-up bard, the coarseness of the Court Jester. This speaks to me of medieval times, where the king has got his hand up a serving wench’s skirt, or a couple of rowdy revellers have nipped off to a quiet corner for a bit of ‘slap and tickle!’

It is immodesty and impropriety, smuttiness and sleaze. The modern-day politician caught with his trousers down being flogged by a dominatrix, type of thing. It is lewd and licentious. seedy and sordid!

It is easy to see why I love this word so much!

Blogging From A-Z Challenge: ‘Q’ — April 20, 2015

Blogging From A-Z Challenge: ‘Q’

On the Blogging From A-Z Challenge today, we have a letter that has got a bit of everything. It is nicely rounded but has a little bit of a spike to it as well. Yes, we have the quirky letter ‘Q.’  It is quaint, yet queenly, fun and funky. It is nearly always followed around but its partner in crime as well, the letter ‘u.’ They  make a wonderful team and are virtually inseparable. Today, I have chosen a word that I encounter a lot…although to experience it is pretty unpleasant, the sound of the words itself makes me smile.

Queasy. Now this word is for those who are a bit ‘green around the gills.’ It is the stomach churning feeling you might have whilst being flung about all over the place on a roller coaster, that turns you upside down for good measure too.

It is the bilious and bloated result of overindulgence on rich foods, or the burning back of the throat , that preludes a vicious, vomiting attack. The tipsy, dizzy feeling of a few too many ‘sherbets!’

As a final treat, it is the stench of festering, flesh, putrid and pus filled, that sickens you to the pit of your stomach!

Enjoy your lunch! 🙂

Episode 296: Blog Feed! — April 19, 2015

Episode 296: Blog Feed!

Well today is the last day of the Easter holidays and it’s back to work tomorrow after two weeks off. It has been so nice to have this time off, especially as the weather has been pretty kind as well, on the whole.

The one thing I will miss though is being able to spend more time on my blogging. I have been able to feed my blogging addiction quite a lot over the last two weeks, and instead of my hunger being sated, I find that my appetite has grown!

I am actually going to have to use the ‘schedule’ button a bit more than I normally do as I like to write ‘off the cuff’ about whatever takes my fancy. It is odd to  think though that before September last year when I started this blog, I had never done any sort of writing as such.

I have always loved poems, and little ditties which I still like to do now, along with a newfound extra; I have discovered the Haiku (thanks to dear Hugh and Ronovan). They are also pretty fun to do, although as there are rules with them, they require a bit more thought (stretching my poor brain to the limit)!

Given my love of words, and being such a prolific reader as well, it is odd that I never really considered writing before. Mind you, it probably has a lot to do with confidence really, as my idea of people who wrote, were either of scholarly types, locked away in the attic for hours scribbling frantically, or of the bright and funny young women bashing away at a temperamental typewriter knocking out their latest ‘bonkbuster!’

Obviously, I fit into neither of those categories, nor do I have anything specific that I like to write about, apart from the fact that I do prefer to have some sort of humour running through it. Perhaps that is why I have become addicted to blogging. It seems to fit with me perfectly, because not only can I write to my heart’s content, I also get to interact with other bloggers too. That for me is the main course and the dessert!
