This week Linda has given us resolution to use for our Stream of Consciousness posts, which can be used any way we choose.
This year I am not sure that I am going to make any New Year resolutions. The thing is, they start off well and then get left behind. This leads to guilt and deprivation, then more doing what I have resolved to give up, then more guilt and deprivation until we get to the end of the year and I am in worse shape than when I started the year!
Of course, I am mainly referring to my weight, and my struggle to lose it. I don’t know what is the matter with me but I just can’t seem to do it and it is getting me down, big time! My blood sugars are all over the place as well at the moment, which just adds to the mess! I haven’t been to the gym or healthy lifestyle appointments either, as I did quite a bit of comfort eating lately, which has led to me not wanting to know how much I weigh, and I feel guiltier than ever that my earlier enthusiasm has gone off on holiday!
Anyway, this post has got a bit depressing and is rapidly going downhill, which was not my intention at all! It does not mean that I am giving up completely on my healthy living quest, just that I am going to take a new approach to it, without putting too much pressure on myself, therefore dooming myself to failure. That is my resolution.
Any ideas?
Sis, you’ve just gotta do what you can. Don’t stress yourself but take baby steps and you’ll get there. Xxx

I think that is my problem. I am getting so het up about it which then makes me comfort eat!!! 🙂

Dear Sis you are doing great. Ideas… Slimming World or Weight Watchers both excellent. Have you thought of one of those companies that you can order all your meals and snacks from, maybe pricy but you don’t have to worry about portion sizes. .. I guess you have thought of all this but just thought I’d say.
The most important thing is just love yourself we all do!
Happy new year Hun ?????

Thanks so much Sis. Yes I have considered one of those companies, but it annoys me that I can’t do it myself! I am going to have another go at it, before I give in!
How lovely of you to say that , Sis and a Happy New Year to you too. xxx ??

I’m planning on walking more. My sister has proposed a shared treat if I manage to lose another stone, so I have some motivation. Unlike last Christmas, I’ve put on some weight, so it’s more than a stone that has to go. I try not to think in terms of all the weight I have to lose, just a stone a year.
I hope you find something that works.

Thanks April. I have to say that I have not weighed myself for a while, but I will have to so that I get an idea of how much I have put on! Good luck with your weight loss attempts too 🙂

One step at a time, sis! Rome wasn’t built in a day either. Take the first subject that feels most important to you and completely focus on it and find ways to achieve your end goal. If you see that there is room for more goals to achieve than at them. But whatever you do, break it down to little steps and you will see progress immediately which supports the whole process! You can do it, sis!

Get your blood sugar under control and you will find the weight comes off much more easily. They often say we are diabetic because of the excess weight, but what they fail to mention is that it is next to impossible to lose the weight when our blood sugars are a mess. I finally got put on the correct med and then last year I lost over 20lbs. I wish you a healthy New Year and look forward to more of your posts.

Thank you so much for your encouragement, it really does help. I am glad that you have got your blood sugars sorted now. A couple of days before Christmas my GP did change my meds a bit so hopefully that will help too 🙂

The GP’s focus so strongly on the weight “causing” abnormal sugar, that they lose sight of the fact that it really hinders any weight loss too. You got this!!

Yes, they really do, I am feeling a lot more positive after reading yours and others’ encouraging and helpful comments, thank you! 🙂

I’m a huge fan of food, so I make it a habit to work out. It takes some mental conditioning, but I find it helps if I pack a gym bag and leave it by the door. Or, I make a deal with myself, no treats unless I work out for 20-30 minutes. One of the other things I do which takes no willpower at all, is surround myself with magazines and books about healthy living. For some reason, when I read “Backpacker Magazine” I suddenly start thinking more like an outdoor enthusiast! It’s a way to keep working on making the mind shift.
But, I’ll tell you–I found myself with an aversion to alcohol for about six weeks. I just didn’t want it. So I didn’t have any. And I lost weight. I was also doing a work out challenge at the time, so I don’t think it was ONLY the alcohol-free. But I was surprised to find that a very simple change took weight off! I do like a glass of wine or a cocktail, and I do enjoy a few now and then. But for that space of time, just not wanting it and choosing sparking water instead was a game changer.
It’s not easy to make a lifestyle change! Good luck with your plan, I’m sure you’ll do fantastic!

Thank you for sharing those tips with me. I agree that having healthy living material around does inspire me more. I am hoping that I will be in a better frame of mind once I am back at work and the holidays are over! I really appreciate your helpful advice, and hope that in a few months time, I will be well on the right road 🙂

It is always hard when losing weight is your new year goal. I’m the same. I always seem to GAIN weight when I am attempting to lose it! 😦
What worked for me was starting to walk or cycle to work everyday (especially cycling.) It became part of my routine, and I think of it as transportation, rather than exercise. It was exhausting for the first few weeks, but now I am starting to enjoy it. The other good thing is that I started saving money for transportation!
Could you possibly swap some car journeys for walking/cycling?

That is a great idea, Josy, I am pretty useless on a bike but I could certainly walk more 🙂

Add exercise to your lifestyle, basically that is what helps to keep the weight down. We are forever battling to keep the kilos off with all this extremely tasty food around 🙂 Thank goodness for dog walking and exploring. So have empathy for your situation. You will do it, just when you least expect to do so 🙂

Thanks, Suzanne, yes I really do need to walk more and will make a determined effort to do so 🙂

I have three long time girlfriends who go back to Weight Watchers when they grow unhappy with their weight. All of them get it off again, and then they berate themselves for not sticking to it. But, Judy, everyone has their struggles. Don’t be hard on yourself x

Judy, I’m working on my weight again this year. And also, a no spend year.
So, I will not buy any drinks, or snacks. If I really want brownies, I have to cook them myself. That will mean, barely any brownies! lol
We can do this!! I’m not resolving to exercise, or anything silly like that. Just to breathe deeply, and move my body every time I think of snacks. Drink lots of refreshing water! Also, I’m stating things in positive ways, instead of negative.
“I love drinking cool , refreshing water.”
“I love eating fresh, wholesome foods.”
“I love moving my body.”
“I love saving money, and paying all my bills on time.”

Hi Judy, I have had to put my little Michael on a healthy eating plan too. With all his cortizone intake and other medications and a limited ability to exercise due to illness he has become quite plump. When I took him to the doctor and she said that he had gained seven kgs in 3 months I knew I had to do something. I took him to a dietitian in November and we have a meal plan. It is really not bad and he does not feel hungry on it. He did really well initially and then he started felling left out with regards to sweet treats and to push back. I have now implemented a treat day once a week when he gets to have a moderate portion of something he likes like ice-cream or pudding. This seems to work better and he doesn’t feel so deprived.

It is really tough trying to lose weight especially for children. I am glad that Michael is coping well on the meal plan and his treats. I am going to try really hard again this year! 🙂
