Getting Back in the Saddle — March 13, 2018

Getting Back in the Saddle

Having taken a break from blogging for nearly a month, I am finding it a little tricky getting back into the saddle which I wasn’t expecting. I used to post almost daily about all kinds of subjects, yet now I find myself struggling for something to say.

Don’t get me wrong, I am sure I could bore you all to tears talking about my nursing experiences, but I have already mentioned nursing lately, and I am wary of over-egging that pudding, instead, I will drip feed you slowly over a period of time. (Why does everything with me always come down to food analogies)?!

Speaking of which, I had my diabetic review (on my birthday as it turned out), and things seem to be a bit haywire there. My weight has gone up even more, as have my blood sugars (according to the Hba1c blood test), and my liver function is deranged (hopefully I will find out why when I speak to GP tomorrow although it could be to do with my weight). This is all rather ironic as I am trying to get myself into shape before (hopefully) qualifying as a nurse, (bugger, I said I wouldn’t mention nursing)!

I am going to really have to put a lot of extra effort into living a healthier lifestyle, and no doubt I will post about my trials and tribulations on the way. Well, that will certainly give me plenty to write about!

Town and country sunrise… | Sue Vincent’s Daily Echo

A beautiful sunrise and inspirational post from Sue.

“I can’t remember ever actually watching a dawn,” said my son in a plaintive little voice.  He had been looking at some of my dawn photos, taken that morning from my doorstep. He …

The Great Book of Lists Chapter 3.1: A Party of Choice — March 17, 2016

The Great Book of Lists Chapter 3.1: A Party of Choice

Me and my guests!

This week’s list is all about people. We can choose whoever we like, living or dead, famous or not. The Duchesse would like us to list who we would  most like  to meet. This is going to be a tricky one, I think, but here are some people I would love to meet:

  • Maya Angelou. Since I came across her book ‘I know why the caged bird song’ several years ago, I have been impressed by how she made something of herself despite the awful tragedies and setbacks encountered in her life, not to mention the discrimination she suffered! She was a wise woman and an inspiration.
  • Elvis Presley. Now, being rather partial to a handsome man, I would love to meet him when he was at his prime. Not only would he be wonderful to look at, (I think he was one of the best-looking men ever),  but he would be able to serenade us all with his beautiful voice too!
  • Stephen Fry. I wish I had an iota of this man’s wit and intelligence. He would be the ideal guest, regaling us with his hilarious anecdotes, plus I am sure we would all learn something from him!
  • Henry VIII. Not only is this a damn good excuse to have a Medieval nosh-up, but I would love to find out what makes him tick, as he was a man of many contradictions!
  • Pam Ayres. I love her style of humorous poetry, so would definitely have to have her around so that I could pick her brains and get some fresh ideas!
  • Queen Elizabeth I. Just like her father she was quite a feisty character, a strong woman who did things her way.  What an interesting woman to chat to!

I think I would have to have several parties as I am sure there are plenty of others that I could invite!

The Great Book of Lists 2.2 Words That Matter — February 18, 2016

The Great Book of Lists 2.2 Words That Matter

Beauty

Today we are concentrating on words for the Duchesse’s Great Book of Lists.  As you know, I love words, normally the wackier the better. However, today I will be concentrating on words that matter. This prompt was suggested by the lovely Rosema who wanted us to think about words  that have had some kind of positive impact in our lives. words that have given us encouragement helped us when we were down or propelled us forward. Words that matter, indeed.  Here are some of mine that come to mind…

  • You are a valued member of our team Jude, and I just want you to know that. This was said to me just today actually by one of the senior nurses on my team. It really meant a lot to me hearing that, as I always try to work hard, so it is lovely to feel that it is appreciated.
  • I love you, Mama. Whenever Miss Haps says this, it really melts my heart. We have our ups and downs and because of her Asperger’s, she can be extremely blunt, which can be very hurtful at times, so when I hear this, it always lifts me up and keeps me going!
  • You look pretty today. Occasionally I do actually make an effort to look nice, and sometimes Mr Grump notices! It is always lovely getting compliments and it gives me just a little extra boost!
  • Believe in yourself, and if at first you  don’t succeed then try, try again. This really is  something that I try and remember. It is surprising how many things I have achieved that I had never dreamed I would be able to do. Alright, I may not be the best writer, poet, seamstress, cook or even the best mum, but I try! I get it wrong probably more times than I get it right, but I don’t give up. I am very determined that I will succeed, and that is because I believe that I can do it.

Although there are probably plenty more examples of words that matter, these are the ones that immediately spring to mind as being important to  me.

Quote of The Day Challenge: Day 2 — February 4, 2016

Quote of The Day Challenge: Day 2

I have been nominated by the lovely Funsie from Simply Me to take part in one of my favourite challenges. Why not pop on over to her blog and say hello. She has lots to keep you entertained on her blog whilst you visit.

The rules for this challenge are as follows:

1  –  Thank the blogger that nominated you.
2 – Share one new quote on three consecutive days on your blog. They can be from anywhere, anyone, or anything.
3 – On each of the three days, nominate three more bloggers to carry on with the fun! No pressure; nominees are free to decline.

I have decided that I will be using quotes from the wonderful Maya Angelou. A lady of immense courage, wisdom and fortitude that battled many challenges in her life, yet rose above them all.

You can only become truly accomplished at something you love. Don’t make money your goal. Instead pursue the things you love doing and then do them so well that people can’t take their eyes off of you.

  • Maya Angelou

My nominees, should they want to participate, are:

Raphaela from Hummingbird Redemption

Mary-Anne from Breathing Life

Wendy from Wendy of The Rock

A Sad Day For Music – RIP David Bowie — January 11, 2016
Free For All Friday. — December 11, 2015

Free For All Friday.

It is already  Friday again!  The weeks are flying by so quickly at the moment, I can hardly keep up. The year has almost gone as well now with only a few more Fridays left.

I have found a few more posts for you about a variety of subjects which I am sure are going to impact on you in some way as they did on me.

Roughwighting We all love a compliment and this post shows that others may see us  differently than we see ourselves!

SD Gates This post is a very sad reflection of the times we live in. Unfortunately, though it is something that needs to be considered.

The V-Pub  Another reflection on the times we live in, and a very poignant song to go with it.

Nick Verron  I have not highlighted a particular post here for several reasons. This blog is not very old yet, and there are only a few posts, BUT they are all wonderful. This man is an absolute wonder! Talk about inspirational, this blog is the epitome of it.

So there you have my wonderful choices for this week. Please take a moment to visit these blogs if you haven’t already done so as they have so much to offer.

Happy Friday!

Episode 491: Tweets to Inspire — September 11, 2015

Episode 491: Tweets to Inspire

Social media seems to be so popular now, that if you are not using it then you are seriously missing out on a whole new audience.

For today’s Writing 101 task, we are taking our inspiration from quotes that have been posted on Twitter. There were five inspirational quotes, each on a different topic that we could choose from. The quote above regarding education is the one that resonated most with me.

I love to learn new things, whether it be something work related, like administering intravenous drugs, or showing off a dress or skirt that I had made from scratch (actually I am not at this stage yet, even though I have made a few items of clothing)! Life is full or new and interesting things for us to try.

For me, learning fulfils my thirst for knowledge, but it is one that will never be fully quenched as I find something else that I need to learn about! This is why this quote is so apt, no matter how much I have studied and think I know,in the grand scheme of things, I am still pretty ignorant!

I am going to be embarking on a new job soon, which will involve yet more learning, plus I am going to undertake a huge project soon which is going to be my biggest challenge yet. All of this is going to involve intense learning, There will no doubt be tears, frustration, a good dose of swearing, and stomping about, but I can’t wait to get started!

Episode 476: Inspiration and Motivation. — August 30, 2015

Episode 476: Inspiration and Motivation.

Not a bad end to the week really when I find that I have actually lost 3lb! I have had quite a bit of inspiration and encouragement from so many of you lovely bloggers, and have tentatively put a foot forward on the tightrope that is going to lead me to a healthier life, once I get to the other side.

The 3lb has had a knock-on effect in that I actually felt motivated to get out into the fresh air and have a brisk walk to shake off the inertia that had settled on me this morning, (That might have something to do with Miss Hap having a very noisy sleepover last night and me not getting a lot of sleep)!

As I am off this week I can even paint my nails, which is a luxury indeed! I have already raided Miss Hap’s extensive nail varnish collection and chosen 5 bright colours to pretty up my toenails but am going to take my time choosing something for my finger nails.

I have even been sociable with ‘My Fitness Pal’ telling him all about my lovely low-calorie meals and  fruit and veg intake, in order that he can monitor my progress (poor thing is easily pleased)!

I am really grateful that motivation turned up this week as it is usually hiding away somewhere unwilling to get involved. It makes such a huge difference, especially when inspiration and support had already joined the party. It means that I have got more chance of getting success  and achievement to come round!

Episode 355. Ronovans Writes Weekly Haiku Poetry Prompt #47: Water & Bard.

Oh I do love Mondays when I can get to have a go at Ronovan’s  weekly Haiku Challenge. He has, however, given us some really tricky words to use this week, with ‘bard’ and ‘water.’ I do love a challenge though and have had a go.
