Free-For-All Friday #34

I am not ready for Friday this week, it has flown by far too quickly! I have just got a couple of posts for you this week. All you have to do if you need more is to visit any of the blogs on my sidebar that I follow as they are all brilliant!

A Real Messy Beautiful Twisted Sunshine This is a Flash Fiction story that has a wonderfully surprising ending! It is something that I can certainly relate to!

John D Eccles I loved this post. Josh has such a dry sense of humour and I like his style of writing.

I am sure you are going to be entertained by both of these posts and there is plenty more for you to enjoy if you pay these blogs a visit.

Happy Friday!

Bumping Along! — October 22, 2015

Bumping Along!

I am sorry to report that not quite two weeks into my new job, and only a week out on the road, I have had my first injury! Now as many of you know, I am pretty clumsy and am banging into things so often that it is almost an everyday event, not worthy of a mention.

However, yesterday morning I was to meet up with one of my senior colleagues in order to spend the day with her. As she was coming from a different direction, I was actually meeting her at the patient’s house about 10 miles away just after 8 am.

Of course, I love to be punctual (if not too bloody early) for everything, and had decided that once I had consulted Mr Sat Nav to see how long it was going to take me, and taken in the fact that it was pouring with rain, plus factored in the possibility of rush hour traffic that I should leave at 7.20.

Needless to say, I got there way too early at (7.45), but I spent the time productively loitering in my car catching up with the comments on my blog! I have a squeegee in the car for when the windows get steamed up, which I had used in order to see out of the windows when it got near the time to meet my colleague.

I chucked it into the little compartment just under the steering wheel and went to get out of the car. As it is a lot smaller than my previous yellow car, the squeegee was sticking out and dug right into my knee scraping off the top layer of skin in the process. Had I been on my own I would have uttered a few choice words and hopped around for a bit clutching my knee, but I wanted to try to look professional.

I plastered a smile (or rather a grimace) on my face as I greeted my colleague but was in such pain with the knee that I hobbled over to her, limping lopsidedly. Noticing her alarmed expression I mentioned that I had bumped my knee and laughed it off! I added as a little extra that I was ‘a bit clumsy’ which I immediately regretted as we were administering insulin to the patient! She must have been thanking her lucky stars that I wasn’t coming at her with a needle!

Wacky Word Wednesday — October 21, 2015

Wacky Word Wednesday

Welcome to my Wacky word Wednesday! I do love digging up weird, wonderful or wacky words to share, that quite frankly, are not getting the usage they deserve! Today I have found one that is still around, but not as popular as it used to be (probably because to be called it is not exactly complimentary. I love the sound of this word as it is, but that can be improved even more if you inject a bit of venom into it!

Gormless.  This is a ‘lights on but nobody home’ kind of a word. Vacant and vacuous. dopey and dim-witted, the kind of puzzled and perplexed look that shows a total lack of comprehension. It is the airhead, who can’t concentrate, the numskull that doesn’t get it no matter how many times it is repeated!

It is the dunderhead fooling around and messing everything up; the silly idiot playing pitiful pranks. All-in-all, a pretty apt word to describe how I am feeling at the moment trying to learn things for my new job!

Knowing when to Zip It! — October 20, 2015

Knowing when to Zip It!

As this is now my second week at work, I am actually going out and about with other nurses and getting to meet some of the patients, which has been really nice. A couple of them have even remembered my name which is pretty special to me, The community nurses seem to have a much closer relationship with the patients and built on trust and mutual respect and it is reflected by the way the patients greet you and welcome you into their home.

By the same token, driving around between visits has also given me the opportunity to get to know some of the nurses a little better as well. As many of you know, I am quite a shy person. However, sometimes when I get a bit nervous I talk too much and start blathering on about all sorts, barely pausing for breath.

Today I was out with my boss and we got to talking about my daughter. I mentioned that she had Asperger’s and a lengthy conversation ensued in which I rabbited on about how she had got into a bit of trouble at school because of her tendency to say what she thinks. This is not always appreciated by the staff, or other children and has landed her in hot water on several occasions. My boss was pretty empathetic actually considering she hardly managed to get a word in edgeways!

Amway, this afternoon I went out with another senior nurse and we drove through town just as my daughter’s school was kicking out, so we saw a load of them milling about. The nurse made a comment about the school and I mentioned my daughter went there, and because I had told the boss earlier, I told her the story of how she got into trouble a few times. It was then she told me that her husband was a teacher there!

I was cringing because if I had known that, I would never have said anything to them about my daughter, so as not to mark her card! I asked her when she got in if she knew this teacher. Yes, he had taught her last year! Luckily, she has a different surname from me, but then I think I mentioned her first name which is not that common! Ooops!

Ronovan’s weekly Haiku Poetry Prompt Challenge: #67 ‘Cheer’ & ‘Call’ — October 19, 2015

Ronovan’s weekly Haiku Poetry Prompt Challenge: #67 ‘Cheer’ & ‘Call’

I am liking the words this week for Ronovan’s Haiku Challenge, which are ‘cheer’ and ‘call.’ I have taken a bit of a liberty with the ‘cheer’ part of the challenge and have taken it literally!

I decided that I would write my haiku about the changing colours of the trees in autumn.

Autumn pays a call

Yay, time for a new outfit!

Does orange suit me?

Tj’s Household Haiku Challenge – Eggs

TJ has set quite a challenge this week, giving eggs as the prompt to use. His photo and Haiku were beautiful. (He always manages to make everything looks so special, even the humble egg)!

Mine, of course, has got an entirely different take on it than his!

Here goes:

At Last! First Day on the Job! — October 16, 2015

At Last! First Day on the Job!

What a crazy whirlwind of a week. I was so looking forward to getting started in my new job, so of course getting the mother of all colds set me back a bit! Luckily for 3 days I was just across the road and could walk to work!

Yesterday Mr. Sat Nav (I don’t like the woman’s voice bossing me about) directed me to my training in a calming, relaxed manner, and having a trainer that was tremendous fun made it all the more enjoyable. There were actually at least three of them this week that were mad as hatters, but made dry subjects so much more palatable by their unique presentations.

So today I was to actually start work and I was pretty excited. Despite the fact that it was lashing down with rain, and my nose was now dry and a bit crusty, I was undaunted. I put on my uniform, (luckily I had not given back the old one yet, and it is the same), cadged a lift with Mr, Grump as he was off and I didn’t want to get wet, and arrived nice and early (well, too early if truth be told).

Eventually, someone signed me in and I got to meet my new team. I ordered my uniform, filled in some paperwork, then went out on some visits with my new boss.I was really impressed at the way they worked and it was really nice visiting people in their own homes. I already met some characters, one of the ladies answered the door topless, but after working in the hospital, that did not phase me as many of the patients loved to strip off given the chance.

I had not brought lunch as was unsure what I wanted and there was a shop close by the office where I could get something anyway. However, as we were handing back to the office about 2pm, I realized that I felt really sick. I put it down to not eating and bought myself a chicken and stuffing sandwich from the shop. I didn’t want it actually but made myself eat it.

About an hour or so later I went out with another nurse to do one last call. She is not a local lady so used her Satnav to get to the address. I did not ask her where we were going, and we had a nice little trip out in the countryside along nice bumpy lanes, and my tummy was churning about all over the place.

Oh God, I felt sick, and wished I had not eaten that bloody sandwich. Anyway, we realised what had happened as soon as I heard the address. I actually knew where it was anyway, and we soon got to where we needed to go.

When we arrived, I almost jumped out of the car, trying to get some fresh air as I felt bad. I had not mentioned to anyone at all that I felt rough, as for some reason, I thought it might be car sickness (I used to suffer when I was a child)  and that would not bode well in the job! (I am fine when driving myself, by the way)!

The lovely elderly lady was cooking her dinner, but the smell although nice, churned me up a bit more. I then was asked to help with the leg dressing, and in fact, redressed it myself, which involved kneeling on the floor, something which along with the wound, did nothing to ease my volcanic stomach!

We got back to the office half an hour later than I was supposed to leave and it was really lashing down with rain by now, but I decided that I didn’t want Mr Grump picking me up as I had more than enough of cars for one day!

First Week Nearly Done! — October 15, 2015

First Week Nearly Done!

Well, as you can see by my pic, I am still not feeling well! Despite the dark circles under my eyes from the lack of sleep and the red and sore nose from the snotty nose, not to mention the aching ribs from constant coughing and sneezing, I have now finished the first stage of training and nearly completed my first week.

There are always positives though so this is what has been great about this week:

  • I got to wear some lovely nail varnish and had beautiful looking nails all week (well until 10 mins ago, when I removed the polish and cut the nails ready for the first day at my actual workplace tomorrow)!
  • I met some great people from all sorts of professions in the Health Service, and we had some very interesting discussions.
  • The trainers were all so keen and enthusiastic, plus there were a couple of real characters amongst them that made the sessions so much fun!
  • I visited a small hospital today for some training that I had never been to before and was so impressed with their tiny little shop, that I bought this lovely new mug for a snip at 50p! Yes, 50 pence!

New Mug

I have been pretty lax at reading blogs this week due to early nights and feeling grotty. I am going to try and catch up a bit tonight and over the weekend. That is why I have not commented much on anyone’s blogs.

Wacky Word Wednesday — October 14, 2015

Wacky Word Wednesday

Well, this week I have managed to remember  that my ‘Wacky word Wednesday’ feature should actually be posted on Wednesday! I have got a hyphenated word for you this week (sounds posh, but is far from it) which I have heard right from when I was a little girl, and actually now refer to myself as being it, before anyone else gets in!

Cack-handed. This word is very often applied to left-handers such as myself but, is also ham-fisted, heavy-handed. awkward and inept. Someone who is incompetent and incapable. clumsy and cumbersome.

They are butterfingered and burdensome, bungling, and bodging everything up. Graceless and gauche are their middle names, as they barge about their business clomping about like cart horses, breaking things or knocking them over!
