Wacky Word Wednesday

Skyscrapers

Here we are ready for another Wednesday where I unearth a wacky, wonderful or weird word that is not used often enough! Today’s word is no exception, and I would put it in the ‘wacky’ category due to the sound of it.  It is one of those words that always makes me smile when I hear it, and I am pretty fond of using it as often as I can too.

Wonky – What a wibbly, wobbly word this is. A bit off kilter, slightly skew-whiff, knocked off balance, or out of alignment. It’s that crooked picture you just have to straighten (never mind that it is in someone else’s house) or the sponge cake you loving baked that had turned out a bit lop-sided.

It is rickety and rocky, unstable, like one leg of a table is a bit shorter than the rest, causing it to lurch wildly as soon as anyone puts anything on it!  Actually, it is rather like me trying to walk in skyscraper heels, tottering and teetering trying to stay upright!

Wacky Word Wednesday

Welcome to the first Wacky Wednesday of 2016. I thought it would be fun to carry this on as it seems to e pretty popular. For anyone new to my blog, this is where I get to revive a word that is weird, wacky or wonderful and give it a new lease of life. The English language is so rich and varied with new words being introduced all of the time, that I thought it would be nice to look at words that are not getting the usage they deserve! This week’s word has been suggested to me by Geoff who, being an author, is no stranger to words, wacky or otherwise!

Bombastic. Oh. this is a snooty  stuck up kind of a word. Loving the sound of your own voice, prattling on pretentiously whilst all around are nodding off! It is swaggering self-importantly, indulging in gibber jabber that is grandiose but meaningless.

It awful oration, that is too flowery or flouncy. The speaker needing to get their head out of their arse in order to appeal to the audience. It is inflated egotism, verbal diarrhoea and a load of bull!

Hmmm reminds me of old school assemblies when the head got on her high horse!

Wacky Word Wednesday

Welcome to the last ‘Wacky Word Wednesday’ of 2015. My chance of digging around for words that are weird, wacky or just plain wonderful (and perhaps even all three)! I then get to dust them off, dress them up and give them another whirl. Today’s word is one that has rather an onomatopoeic quality to it, as you will see.

Daft. Yes, this is a silly word. It is barmy and bonkers, someone who is a little odd or offbeat. For some reason, we Brits use ‘daft as a brush’ to describe someone, or something, which makes no sense at all really as I was unaware that brushes were stupid. I thought they were rather useful for sweeping things up, but there you go!

It is the dopey and the gormless, the half-baked halfwit that is not quite on this planet. It is the crazy, and the crackers, nutty professor type of person who is off their trolley.

It also applies to animals, the dippy dog that twirls around and around chasing its tail, or the preening parrot, prancing about spouting nonsense. What about the cat that jumps on top of the swing bin and ends up falling through!

No-one is immune, as we all have daftness within us. Some of us just use it more than others!

Wacky Word Wednesday

Welcome to another wonderful Wednesday when we get to explore a weird, wonderful or just downright wacky word. The one I have chosen this week has a wonderful sound to it which is rather pleasing on the ear! It is a word that still gets plenty of use (at least by me), but still deserves to be the focus of attention.

Flummoxed. This is a mixed-up, muddled-up word indeed; baffling and bewildering, confused and confounded. It can be  puzzling and perplexing, not sure what is going on, kind of word, being all at sea, or at sixes and sevens.

This word is spaced out, shot to pieces, dazed and discombobulated, not to mention befuddled and bemused. It pretty much sums up how I feel at the moment.

Wacky Word Wednesday

Wahay it’s Wednesday! This is where I get to play with  wacky, weird or wonderful words. The one I have chosen today has a wonderful ring to it. Its original meaning was to ‘plump with fat’ or to puff up, so of course, this word is right up my street! So here without further ado, I give you….

Chuffed. This is such a happy word, pleased as punch, and thrilled to bits. It is jolly and jovial, ecstatic and exuberant. The feeling you have when things go right for a change, blithe and buoyant, rosy and rapturous, on top of the world (hmmm that sounds familiar)!

The origins of this word make me think of a little bird plumping itself up, and preening with pride, puffing out its little chest. Chirpy, and cheerily hopping about!

Wacky Word Wednesday

Welcome to Wednesday where I choose a wacky, weird or wonderful word that deserves to have its time in the spotlight. The one I have chosen for today is still used quite widely, but it is one that makes me laugh. We all know people like this, and I bet some of us are even guilty of it at times as well…

Skive. Ah yes, this is the shirker, sloping off work early, or nipping out every five minutes for a cig break or a loo stop.  It is the workshy waster wandering off when there is work to be done.  It is also the truant, bunking off school, or dodging disliked lessons, preferring to spend the day somewhere more exciting, yet not risk getting caught.

It is also the malingerer, feigning fake illnesses that stop them from working/going to school. They loaf around lethargically until the miraculous recovery kicks when they have got their way!

Needless to say, I was rubbish at it at school, and the one afternoon I did skive off, I got caught and found myself in the headmistresses office, being told I would NEVER amount to anything! (They were pretty strict in those days).

Have you ever had skiver itis?

Wacky Word Wednesday.

Welcome to another wild, wacky and wonderful Wednesday, where I get to play around with words that are underused and under-appreciated (in my opinion), and give them a turn in the spotlight. This week I have been given a suggestion by the wonderful Geoff from Tangental. He is certainly a master of words if ever I met one,  and is the author of two books which you can check out on his website. So the words for this week is…

Pukka. Now this word is proper, the real deal, bang on the money type of a word. it is genuine and sincere, bona fide, spot on. A certain young Naked Chef made this saying popular some time ago and for such a simple word, it manages to say a lot.

It can be authentic and original, top-notch and tip-top. smart and special. An all round good-egg, or someone who has been a brick!

It could actually apply to good old Geoff himself!!!

Wacky Word Wednesday

I do love Wednesdays when I can highlight a little-used work, give it a shake off and dust up ready for its chance to shine. The word I have chosen this week is a wonderful little word that is one of my mum’s favourites.

Twee. This is a fussy little word, all prim and proper, present and correct, quietly quaint, in its affected overly ‘nice’ manner. Gracious to a fault yet prudish, minding its p’s and q’s in its banality.

The net curtain twitcher, peeping out of the windows of a dainty, chi-chi house which is fastidiously neat and tidy. It is pretentious, la-di-da, very lady of the manor.

It is one word that I certainly cannot be accused of being!

Wacky Word Wednesday!

I have been a little lax with my Wacky Word Wednesday lately as I have been a bit pushed for time, one way or another, but today I have found I have got a few spare minutes which is perfect for me to find another wonderful, weird or wacky word to share. This word had a wonderful onomatopoeic quality to it, which although needs little explanation, is going to get it anyway.

Smarmy. Yes, this is a rather slimy and slick type of word. The greasy, grovelling salesman, fawning over and flattering his (for some reason, women are rarely smarmy) customers.  It is being overly  ingratiating, bowing and scraping in a sycophantic manner.

A cheesy grin, over familiar manner, and irritating personality are the main credentials needed. They preen and primp, as they sidle up to their prey, superior and smug. God’s gift to the ladies, with their practised charm and unctuous manner. All in all, a bit of a prat really!

Wacky Word Wednesday

It’s Wednesday already and time to time to unearth another little-used word, dust it off and give breathe new life into it. The word I have for you today was made popular by Princess Anne, of all people. As some of you may know, the Queen’s only daughter can be rather feisty and grumpy, and takes after her father for not giving a toss about what people think of her!  So here is that delightful word.

Naff. For its first meaning, this word is followed by ‘off!’ It is a wonderful substitute for the ‘f-word’ when in polite company (if it’s good enough for the Royals….) It conveys annoyance at cheeky journalists snapping less than flattering pictures or invading one’s privacy. Pretty much any time someone or something gets on your nerves, this word helps to express the outrage felt!

Now for the other meaning, it is unstylish, useless, shoddy and second-rate. It is the mullet hairdo, or the cheesy pop album; a blast from the past that was pretty crappy first time around!  It is getting short-changed, diddled, scammed, and ripped off, by some shady character. Clashing colours, substandard service, embarrassing in-laws, anything that is a bit below par really. Something I know I am guilty of being.
