The Great Book of Lists Chapter 1.2: The Little Things you Love. — January 11, 2016

The Great Book of Lists Chapter 1.2: The Little Things you Love.

This photo captures numbers 2, 3, and 6 of my favourite things all at once!

We all have those little things that get us through the day, and La Duchesse d’Erat had suggested that we make a list of the little things that mean a lot. Here is mine:

  1. When Miss Hap calls me Mama, like she used to do when she was tiny.
  2. Having my hair brushed, it really relaxes me, but I usually have to bribe Miss Hap to do it for me!
  3. Seeing a vase full of pretty flowers. It reminds me that spring is coming and brings cheer to the dreary day.
  4. The rare occasions that Roxy comes and has a snuggle with me. She is normally ‘daddy’s girl!’
  5. Finding something to wear that actually looks nice on me!
  6. Blogging. All the aspects of it, reading other’s posts, writing my own, and interacting with others.
  7. Mr Grump’s delicious cooking!

Episode 352: Cute Cousins! — May 30, 2015

Episode 352: Cute Cousins!

Miss Hap is very close to some of her cousins and in this photo she is with my youngest sister’s daughter.

It’s quite funny really, because when she was very young, my niece was always mistaken for my child, to the point where people often commented how much she was the spitting image of me. I never really minded though as I saw it as a compliment, although she has a very different personality to me,being much more outgoing and friendly!

Miss Hap and I look nothing alike, even though when she was younger I would sometimes dress her in a kind of junior version of what I was wearing (poor child)! She has though inherited the ‘clumsy’ gene, tripping over her own feet, and knocking stuff over. Of course, when this happens with family around, she then gets told that she is ‘just like her mother,’ which is very unfortunate for her.

The pair of them, despite being so different in looks, are very similar in personality. They can both be pretty feisty, but are very affectionate and loving as well when they want to be. Despite the 16 year age gap between them, they get on really well together, and although Miss Hap started out grumpy when this photo was taken, her cousin soon got her into a good mood!

Episode 312: A new Princess and Playmate For George. — May 3, 2015

Episode 312: A new Princess and Playmate For George.

Amidst a great deal of excitement, a new royal princess was born yesterday. William and Katherine, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge arrived at hospital at 6am yesterday morning as Katherine was in the early stages of labour.

Whilst the poor woman was puffing and panting, not to mention pushing, the world’s press were gathered outside the hospital desperate for news. Our national news reports were covering every aspect and angle they could whilst awaiting confirmation that the baby had been born.

News soon filtered out that a baby girl was born at 8:34am weighing, 8lb 3oz, There had already been huge speculation that the baby would be a girl, and the Queen wore a pink outfit yesterday, to mark her great-granddaughter’s arrival.

Poor little Prince George went to visit his mum and new baby sister, and trotted along holding his dad’s hand, probably terrified at all the people looking at him and taking photos. He did manage a little wave to them though, despite his bemusement.

From about 5pm onwards when I tuned in to watch the news, there was a shot of the hospital door as it was reported that William, Katherine and the new baby were going to leave soon (Prince George had already left; there is no excuse to mess up his evening routine, and he had to be bathed and have his tea.)!

Around 6:30pm we finally got to see the proud parents. Katherine looked as fresh as a daisy with immaculate hair and make-up. No doubt her stylists were on hand to sort her out, as she was probably a bit dishevelled after giving birth less than 10 hours before!

They posed on the steps for a while with the pretty princess, but unlike they did with George, they got straight into to car and drove home, rather than speak to the press.

You have got to admire Kate; it seems like delivering a baby is on in a day’s work for her!

Episode 310: Happy Birthday Beauty! — May 1, 2015

Episode 310: Happy Birthday Beauty!

Was it really 12 years ago

I first held you in my arms?

Your face all scrunched and wrinkled

And little skinny legs and arms!

I had waited so long to have you

And I never thought I’d see

That this beautiful, perfect baby

Would actually belong to me

To start with things were tricky

As it was just the two of us

But we muddled through it

With the minimum of fuss

You have grown so very quickly

And are now nearly a teen

You are clever, bright and funny

And look like a Beauty Queen

We have come so far together

I’m so proud of my little girl

So Happy Birthday darling

You really rock my world!

Episode 288: One-Liner Wednesday: Grown Up! — April 15, 2015

Episode 288: One-Liner Wednesday: Grown Up!

“Wow, you look so grown up, and absolutely beautiful!”

It is a real job to get Miss Hap into a dress. It seems that leggings and jeans is the stock ‘uniform’ of the tween, much to my despair. I have bought her dresses for various occasions but she is not keen, and rarely wears them. She even has a lovely pair of unworn sandals, preferring to wear Converse shoes or some sort of trainers or another.

Today, we are supposed to get 20 degrees Celsius which for us is a heat wave at this time of year (or any time of year actually). This equates to about 68 Fahrenheit, so is quite warm even now,

I picked out a dress for Miss Hap that she has never worn and asked her to try it on. The above is what I said after seeing her in it. I’ve (temporarily) got my little ladylike girl back)!! Needless to say I got a photo – quick!

Episode 238: Self(ie) Confidence! — March 21, 2015

Episode 238: Self(ie) Confidence!

Selfies seem to be so popular at the moment, especially with the young, Now I am not very photogenic so am not that keen on having my picture taken at the best of times. My daughter, however is just the opposite!

She loves to take selfies whenever we go anywhere, and very often tries to get me in on it as well. When one of my best friends got married last year Miss Hap took a load of selfies at our table.  I ended up being in several of the shots, either stuffing myself with food and looking like Bessie Bunter, or having some sort of gormless expression on my face. (I know that might be normal for me but I don’t want her bandying the photos around her friends for their mocking pleasure)!

Now I don’t mind it when she uses one of the funny apps on the phone to scrunch up the face and twist it around a bit so that you end up resembling some evil pixie type of creature. as that is really quite amusing. What I do hate though is the ‘Fatify’ app or whatever it is called!

You might have noticed that I am not the slimmest of people, but by the time this app has finished with me, I have gained yet another three chins! Likewise the ‘oldify’ app. That is hideous as well. Having said that they are all in good fun and thank goodness she sees them as that way too.

In my day, ‘the camera never lied’ but of course now that is far from the truth. We have all heard of these ‘celebrities’ that have photoshopped their already slender bodies in order to shave off a few inches here and there, plus erase some ‘unsightly’ wrinkle, or mark. The end result is a far from realistic image of a supposedly ‘perfect’ person.

Luckily for me, Mr Grump likes a woman with ‘a bit of meat on her bones.’ I am aware that I may have a little too much to be healthy and for that reason need to lose some weight. I do not make a big thing out of it though as I don’t want to make weight an issue which might start influencing my daughter.

My daughter is extremely active and spends loads of time running around, The fact that she is only 11 years old as well, I do not think she should be overly worried at this point about her weight, and thank goodness she doesn’t seem to be. I do try to encourage her to be a little healthier though.

I love this ‘selfie’ of myself and my daughter, it is my favourite picture. She has done something to it with an app, but it only alters the colour, it doesn’t add or take anything away. I hope she continues to be body confident, and enjoys her youth!

Episode 134: Egg On My Face…. — February 2, 2015

Episode 134: Egg On My Face….

“Mum, I’ve forgotten my bus pass”  are not the words that you want to hear at 8am on a Monday morning! Especially if you are still groggy form a dreadful nights sleep…..

My eleven year old daughter is disorganisation personified! No matter how hard I try, how much cajoling, wheedling, and finally grounding  makes no difference at all. She has a head like a sieve (no idea where she gets that from), and no amount of nagging, or should I say ‘reminding’ gets the information into her stubborn head!

I am at home today, waiting for my car to be fixed. I thought I might go mad and do a bit of housework, and other bits and pieces indoors. So for that reason, I have dressed appropriately. A pair of leggings and a long line short-sleeved top are perfect for the tasks I intend to carry out,

They are not however, perfect for having to hot-foot it to the bus stop to deliver the bloody bus pass!  I brushed aside the wearing of socks today, preferring to slop about in my comfy mid heel mules. The problem I had was that time was of the essence, as my daughter and her friend were hoping to catch the next bus at 8.20 and the bus stop is at least a 10 minute walk away.

I grabbed my heavy waterproof jacket and set off. As I was ‘clip-clopping’ down the road in my mules, I smiled at people who were scraping the ice off their cars, ready for work, There were a few raised eyebrows as they clocked my poor, freezing sockless feet in the summer mules, but i walked on head held high!

I phoned my daughter on the way and told her to meet me halfway. She agreed, but I finally caught up with her at the local park, about 2 mins away from the bus stop. Her and her friend sauntered in, totally unperturbed, scoffing sausage rolls (presumably with the money she got from the ‘tooth fairy’ last night)! She grabbed the bus pass, ignored my mini-rant, and dawdled back to the bus stop!

I sped home realising that I had left the pan on with my boiled egg for breakfast in it, hoping that I still had a home left! Luckily, there was a bit of water left in the pan and my egg was hard-boiled to perfection. Just as I like it!

I still have the problem of trying to get my daughter to remember her bus pass in the mornings. Any ideas?!

Episode 132: Monkey Business! — February 1, 2015

Episode 132: Monkey Business!

As I mentioned yesterday, I bought a craft magazine with some wool and various patterns with suggestions on what to make it. Miss Hap decided that she liked the monkey pattern, and with the amount of wool we have, we can actually make three of them. Being the type of person that Ii am, I got stuck straight in to it.

Now I am left-handed and my daughter is right-handed and she can’t knit yet. I know in primary school they did have a brief lesson, but she hadn’t quite grasped it. My attempts to teach her have not been successful because I can’t knit the other way round either!

We settled on me doing the first monkey just to make sure that I was able to actually make it myself (I can knit but have only tried knitting a toy once which was a bit of a disaster),

I knitted up all the various parts of the monkey quite nicely, but as my sewing skills are pretty rubbish, the finished result (as you can see) is a poor little scruffy monkey that already looks like he has been kicked around the block a few times!

Miss Hap, however, loves it!

Episode 97: Messy Miss Hap! — January 11, 2015

Episode 97: Messy Miss Hap!

My daughter’s room is disgraceful

There are clothes all over the floor

Her school bags are chucked in a corner

And you can’t even open the door!

Her linen is rumpled and crumpled

And piled in a heap on the bed

The poor old goldfish neglected

If it wasn’t for me it’d be dead!

Her keyboard stands right in the centre

It’s lead still plugged into the wall

The bin’s overflowing with rubbish

This mess just won’t do at all.

Well it’s time that she got it all tidied

I’m sick of having to moan…

And nag her to clean up her bedroom

Or I’ll confiscate her iPhone!

The threat worked, and the room is tidy……for now!

Episode 76: An Unexpected Treat! — December 15, 2014

Episode 76: An Unexpected Treat!

Miss Hap came home from her Nanny’s yesterday afternoon after spending the night there, and informed me that she HAD to make some cupcakes that very evening. I asked what the urgency was and she told me that her class had actually made them in school last week and as she had forgotten her ingredients she was unable to participate, but she needed to make them, and take a picture in order for her to be able to complete her course work.

I was quite cross as she had told me she was making cup cakes THIS week! We even had all  the ingredients ready for once as well! Honestly, that girl is more scatter-brained than I am and that is saying something! (I had to go to a training course one day whilst I was on annual leave, and turned up a day early to be greeted with a dark and locked training room)! .

Anyway, although we did have the ingredients, we had no cupcake cases. Mr Grump was already out so I phoned him to pick some up, which he was delighted about, and meanwhile, I got out the bits and pieces needed to make the cakes. My daughter was to make these all by herself with NO help from me whatsoever! Now, I have mentioned before in Episode 70 that I am concerned about letting Miss Hap loose on certain things like certain chores and cooking, due to her tendency to be a little bit accident prone, and I was worried about things getting broken or her getting burnt! However, she is 11 now, my little sister lets her do it, fellow bloggers have advised me that she is old enough to do it, and school insists that she does do it, I have to curb the control instinct and let her get on with it!

Luckily for me, the cupcakes were made using the all-in-one method, so it didn’t matter that she is (like me) heavy-handed! She carefully and meticulously weighed out her ingredients a few grams at a time until she had the exact amount, and the finished mixture had a lovely consistency, in no time at all. We had the cases now so she arranged them in the baking tin, ensuring that she used all of the coloured cases. The mix was enough for six cakes so she doled it out equally, and made a good job of it.

I made her check the cakes to see that they were ready and she prodded the top to ensure that they were. I was roped in to help make the butter cream icing once she weighed out the ingredients and I said I would start her off. Of course I made a hell of a mess; the icing sugar went everywhere as I tried to beat it in. Anyway, Miss Hap wanted to decorate the cakes which I was happy for her to do.

The end results looked  so lovely I had to have one. I was impressed, she is obviously much more capable than I give her credit for.
