#SoCS – Egg — March 19, 2016

#SoCS – Egg

We have rather a topical prompt word for Linda’s Stream of Consciousness this week with ‘egg’.

Now, of course, my first thought was Easter as that is hurtling towards us at tremendous speed. I am sure I could go on and on about Easter eggs, but that will only make me hungry and I haven’t got any chocolate in the house at the moment!!

I am going to go totally down another path and talk about the good old British sports days of yesteryear. When I was at school, I remember them being lots of fun (we are talking about primary school here). A lot of effort went into organising the games, and of course, parents were invited too.

This meant that all the children wanted to try their best to impress their parents. We had all the usual running races, but there were the fun ones too like the egg and spoon race (being a klutz I was rubbish at this), the sack race (pretty exhausting this one, jumping about in a small sack trying to get to the finish line), and the three-legged race, being tied at the ankles to another child, and having to run in unison to the finish line.

As you can imagine with these races, there was a lot of tripping and falling over, but we just got up and kept going.

It was all very competitive in those days too, it was encouraged to want to win. At the end of it,  there was usually a mum’s and a dad’s race. I don’t remember my mum ever taking part in this and I can’t say I blame her, as that was also pretty competitive!

Last time I went to Miss Hap’s sports day at primary school, there were none of the races I remembered so well. There was a skipping race, that she managed to win despite losing a shoe! It is not about the winning now, though, everyone get points and prizes which are totted up at the end.

There were  no mums and dads, shoes off, sleeves rolled up, ready to run for glory down the length of the school field elbowing away their rivals (Thank God)! No, it is all very civilised now. For a start, most of the schools use a local sporting facility or recreation ground as they don’t have a field. The area they cordon off for the races are much shorter than I remember. The kids all have their bottles of water, sunhats and suncream on. We didn’t, if we burnt to a crisp then so be it!

Sometimes change can be a good thing!

Writers Quote Wednesday Writing Challenge – “Wisdom” — March 16, 2016

Writers Quote Wednesday Writing Challenge – “Wisdom”

“No one can make you feel inferior without your consent.”

― Eleanor Roosevelt

Today for Colleen and Ron’s Writer’s quote Wednesday writing challenge, we are given the theme of wisdom. I think the above quote is so relevant to me and many others. We are so quick to put ourselves down or downplay our achievements as we feel that others have done so much better, and therefore we could never match up. This is my take on it:

I know that I have a bit of a complex

It is probably because I am shy

I worry that people think I am standoffish

Because I stand silently by

At many a social occasion

When everyone’s chatting away

I am desperately trying

To think of something to say

I don’t live in a fancy residence

I don’t drive the trendiest car

I am not a brilliant genius

I feel that I am below par

But wait, who says I’m not worth it?

It is me that causes myself grief

I need to forget about others

And work on my own self-belief!

Wacky Word Wednesday —

Wacky Word Wednesday

Keep Calm

Welcome to another Wacky Word Wednesday, where I get to feature a word that is weird, wonderful, or just downright wacky! Today I have a word that I use quite a  bit. as not only do I like the sound of it, but it is something that I always seem to be doing!

Faffing. This is a dithering and dallying kind of word. Procrastinating and pondering instead of just getting on with it! Mucking around and all that malarky, putting off the important stuff, preferring to  prat about with the piffling things.

It is fussing and fiddling, bumbling and fumbling about. Something that I seem to excel in!

Cold and Miserable! — March 15, 2016

Cold and Miserable!

Oh, my nose is so drippy

And my throat is all scratchy and sore

I am constantly sneezing

And my nose has been wiped till it is raw

One minute I’m cold and all shivery

And feel like I’m going to freeze

The next I am a raging inferno

And I’m performing a fevered striptease!

I’ve had enough of this cold now

And being all sniffy and snotty

I just want to start feeling better

Instead of looking and feeling so grotty!

Hopefully, it will be gone soon

As it has been hanging around for too long

It is time for it to move on now

And bugger off to where it came from!

TJ’s Household Challenge Haiku – Cupboard

Wardrobe

Well, this week TJ has given us ‘cupboard’ as our prompt for his household haiku challenge. Now, as you might imagine, TJ has an extremely interesting cupboard for his haiku which is worth checking out.

Miss Hap’s cupboard

Who knows what horrors lurk there?

Trying to break free!

Wacky Word Wednesday!

Wednesdays are one of my favourite days, as it when I get the chance to dig up  weird, wacky or just plain wonderful word and give it an airing. This week’s word is one that I always associate with the good old British ‘Carry on Films’ of which of course, I am a fan!

They were packed with double entendres and innuendo, even the character’s names were dodgy most of the time. That is why they appealed to me so much. anyway, without further ado here is the word in question!

Saucy. Bawdy and ribald are all about this word, brash and brazen, even flirty and fresh. This is not a shy word, oh no, more of a salacious and smutty, improper or even indecent kind of invitation where you might get more than you bargained for!

This is also the type of word that is cheeky and cocky; the smart-arse that knows it all, being disrespectful and defiant. The sassy little sod that has an answer for everything and has no respect for authority!

Well Here it is! — March 5, 2016

Well Here it is!

I am very thrilled and delighted to show you my beautiful, shiny new book! Chris at The Story Reading Ape has done an absolutely brilliant job of designing the perfect cover for it too.  He was so helpful and accommodating to me, despite my inexperience in these matters and problems with my e-mail!

At the moment, it is available at CreateSpace, and is now available on Kindle and Amazon.

As I mentioned in my earlier post, I had been encouraged to publish a collection of my poems, and now I have finally done it! I do love to rhyme things and this book is pretty much a compilation of some of my favourites! I have even included some of the raunchier ones to add a little extra spice!

How comes TJ has so many wonderful photos in his collection, that are always so stylish?! For our challenge this week, he has given us ‘window sill’ for our prompt this week. Mine in the front room has recently been decluttered as my sister informed me that it wasn’t really the place for hair brushes and random bits and pieces!

The clutter has gone,

My special plant pot sits there

cheering up the room
