There’s Nowhere Quite Like England —

There’s Nowhere Quite Like England

This is a poem that I wrote many years ago but I have since updated by added another verse. For my 50th birthday, my sister and brother-in-law recorded my mum reading it for me and provided some background music too. I have put it at the end of the poem for you to enjoy.

There’s Nowhere quite like England

There’s Nowhere quite like England

with its counties and its shires

The ancient, rolling countryside

The marshes and the mires

?

There’s nowhere quite like England

The coastline and the sea

The churches and cathedrals

All steeped in history

?

There’s nowhere quite like England

The people are unique

We have our ‘quaint’ traditions

And like the Queen we speak!!

?

There’s nowhere quite like England

The climate so insane

One minute, brilliant sunshine

The next it’s lashing rain!

?

There’s nowhere quite like England

We love a cup of tea

Fish and chips and clotted cream

And juicy strawberries!

?

There’s nowhere quite like England

And, although it’s very small

To me, it is quite frankly

The most wonderful place of all

Writer’s Quote Wednesday Writing Challenge – Obsession. — May 18, 2016

Writer’s Quote Wednesday Writing Challenge – Obsession.

I am taking part in Ronovan and Colleen’s Writers Quote Wednesday Challenge, and this week we have been given ‘obsession’ as our prompt word.
I felt that the following quote by sculptor, Henry Moore, pretty much sums up how I feel, and will be the subject of my poem.

“The creative habit is like a drug. The particular obsession changes, but the excitement, the thrill of your creation lasts.”

-Henry Moore

I have a bit of a problem

That I really ought to confess

Whenever I find a new hobby

I suddenly start to obsess!

First of all, it was sewing

I spent loads of money on that

But sadly, most of my creations

Were nothing better than tat!

I also get caught up in knitting

Stockpiling mountains of wool

With so many projects unfinished

I really am such a fool!

I had a go at card making

Buying up lots of supplies

I made a card for my daughter

After five or six tries!

And then I discovered blogging

As a way to cope with depression

I have slowly formed an addiction

And have yet another obsession!

Camera Shy! — May 17, 2016

Camera Shy!

My husband bought me a camera

To try to improve on my skills

You see, I am a point and press girl

Nothing fancy, no frills!

This one is rather larger

Than the phone that I normally use

With dials and buttons and lenses

About which I don’t have a clue!

I couldn’t wait to start using it

And snapped at all in my sight

Playing with all of the settings

And fiddling about with the light!

It has its own little knapsack

Where I can pack it away

Jammed in with all its accessories

Zipped up so it will stay

Then I see a bird in the garden

Oh, look at it hopping about

Now his wife’s come to join him

Time for the camera to come out

Because I didn’t want to break it

I eased it out from the case

But, the birds have now scarpered

A photo shoot, gone to waste!

I went to a local beauty spot

Practising shot after shot

Trying out all of the settings

Pleased with the photos I’d got

I went to put them all on computer

And then something went horribly wrong

All of my beautiful pictures

Had just disappeared and had gone!

#WQWWC Writers Quote Wednesday Writing Challenge – MAGIC — March 23, 2016

#WQWWC Writers Quote Wednesday Writing Challenge – MAGIC

Those who don’t believe in magic will never find it.
Roald Dahl

This week for Colleen and Ron’s Writer’s Quote Wednesday challenge we have been given ‘magic’ as our prompt. I feel that there are many wondrous and magical things around us , if only we take the time to see it.

Magic is all around us

If only we choose to see.

The first cry of a baby

Delicious honey from a bee

The beauty of the countryside

In the flowers and the trees

The secret little kingdoms

That dwell beneath our seas

The sunrise and the sunset

Fluffy clouds that float on by

The aurora borealis-

That lightshow in the sky

The scientific breakthroughs

That helps us cure our sick

Magicians that keeps us guessing

At how they do their tricks

The glistening snowy landscape

Sparkling stars at night

Yes, magic is all around us

It makes our world so bright.

Ode to my Friend — March 22, 2016

Tomorrow is such a sad day for me

It is when I say my final goodbye

Your time on this earth has now ended

You’re going to join the stars in the sky

You were my best friend in childhood

We were together all the time

I loved spending time round at your house

And you were always welcome at mine.

Just like me you were clumsy

Always tripping over your feet

Once you gave me a piggy back

And we both fell over in the street!

You were always so very thoughtful

And every Valentine’s Day

You sent me a card and a present

 Even when I moved away!

Our lives moved in different directions

And yet, we never lost touch

Always there in the background

Despite, not seeing each other much.

I know you told me your feelings

And we decided that we wanted to date

We went out together at the wrong time

And ended up just staying as mates

I hadn’t seen you for ages

Then bumped into you when I had gone out

We stopped and chatted like old times

Your life seemed all sorted out

I can’t believe you have gone now

And that I won’t see you again

But I have such wonderful memories

And with me they will always remain.

World Poetry Day — March 21, 2016

World Poetry Day

I originally wrote this for last year but thought it should have another airing for those of you that missed it!

I love to write a  poem

About all kinds of stuff

The things that make me happy

Or to moan when things get tough!

There are many types of poem

From which to take your pick

A Haiku, sonnet or blank verse

Ode or Limerick

Some poems can be so funny

Others make you cry

Many are inspiring

So go and give one a try

I want to add my voice to others

In this unique display

Of poets coming together

For World Poetry Day!

Writespiration # 83 – Blackout. — March 19, 2016

Writespiration # 83 – Blackout.

For this week’s Writespiration, Sacha has given us ‘blackout’- to use as our prompt. I wasn’t sure which way to go with it, but this is what I ended up with!

black-out-jpeg

As I sit there watching the big screen

All settled in for the night

Everything’s suddenly gone quiet

And someone has turned off the light.

The pitch black makes me feel nervous

I don’t like being here on my own

I can’t haven’t got any candles

And the where in the hell is my phone?

It feels like the set of a movie

Where the killer is hiding upstairs

Waiting until the right moment

To capture his prey, unawares

My heart is starting to race now

My throat is all parched and dry

I need to go to the toilet

And I’m just about ready to cry!

When, suddenly a massive explosion

Of light and sound dims my fears

I can relax and calm down now

As the opening credits appear.

Writers Quote Wednesday Writing Challenge – “Wisdom” — March 16, 2016

Writers Quote Wednesday Writing Challenge – “Wisdom”

“No one can make you feel inferior without your consent.”

― Eleanor Roosevelt

Today for Colleen and Ron’s Writer’s quote Wednesday writing challenge, we are given the theme of wisdom. I think the above quote is so relevant to me and many others. We are so quick to put ourselves down or downplay our achievements as we feel that others have done so much better, and therefore we could never match up. This is my take on it:

I know that I have a bit of a complex

It is probably because I am shy

I worry that people think I am standoffish

Because I stand silently by

At many a social occasion

When everyone’s chatting away

I am desperately trying

To think of something to say

I don’t live in a fancy residence

I don’t drive the trendiest car

I am not a brilliant genius

I feel that I am below par

But wait, who says I’m not worth it?

It is me that causes myself grief

I need to forget about others

And work on my own self-belief!

Writer’s Quote Wednesday Writing Challenge -Romance — March 9, 2016

Writer’s Quote Wednesday Writing Challenge -Romance

If you live to be a hundred, I want to live to be a hundred minus one day, so I never have to live without you.”

-A.A. Milne

I thought that I would  join in with Ron and Colleen’s Writer’s quote Wednesday writing challenge this week. I love the way they have given it a bit of a revamp and now we can choose to write poetry and haiku as well as flash fiction, that means that I can have a go too.

Here is my take on romance:

I am an affectionate person

With a lot of love in my soul

I want to make you so happy

Bringing light to your life is my goal

I hate to see anyone crying

And it hurts me to see you in pain

I want to make everything better

And make sure you’re smiling again

To hold onto your hand when you’re frightened

To make sure you know that I’m there

I want to allay all your worries

And show you just how much that I care

A smile or a joke passed between us

Or the meaning behind a quick glance

The love we still have together

This old codger’s idea of romance!
